Before Sunrise (1995)
"I always feel this pressure of being a strong and independent icon of womanhood...but loving someone, and being loved means so much to me."
Join Angel as she watches "Before Sunrise" for the first time! Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, as an American guy and French girl who meet on train ride in Europe, and decide to spend the rest of their day together. With non-stop, interesting conversations flowing naturally, plus palpable chemistry and beautiful scenery, Before Sunrise is the most real feeling romantic movie I've ever seen. Co-written and directed by Richard Linklater, this slice-of-life movie definitely gives my heart flutters. Bravo!
Welcome! I'm so happy you're here at the beginning of the channel!!

This movie is actually loosely based on an experience the director had with a woman in Philadelphia. He had hoped she had heard he was making a movie inspired by the day they spent together and would turn up at the premiere but she never showed up. He found out many years later that she had passed away in a motorcycle accident a few months before production on Before Sunrise began. In the credits of Before Midnight, there's a dedication to her.

From Cinemablend: It was revealed during the promotions for Before Midnight that Richard Linklater had based his initial film on an actual meeting. In 1989, he met a woman in a toy store in Philadelphia and, after he passed her a note that read that he was only in town for one night, they got to talking, and continued to do so late into the night. Linklater recalls that during this engaging conversation, he said to her “I want to make a film about this. Just this feeling.” And so he did, making Before Sunrise to capture the rush of meeting someone new. Linklater admitted to hoping that she would turn up at the world premiere, revealing that, like Jesse in writing This Time, he'd hope to capture her attention. Tragically, a friend of the real woman, Amy Lehrhaupt, got in touch to tell him that she had died in a motorcycle accident in 1994 before the release of Before Sunrise. Before Midnight is dedicated to Amy's memory.

I myself have had an experience like Ethan Hawke's character when sees his grandmother in the water. I never have seen a person who died I knew or even a ghost. I literally have see the Devil. I'm not crazy and I am definitely not making this up to sound cool. It scared the shit out of me. I was 13 years old and at a public park alone. I started out walking through the nature trail. Then all of a sudden everything stopped moving. I mean totally frozen in time except for myself. I was freaking out, yelling and screaming for help. Then I thought that I had either died or lost my mind. Then a dark figure appeared in the distance. The figure kept getting closer and closer to me. Not by running or power walking. It looked like it was gliding a few feet off the ground. The moment the dark figure got face to face with me. I was even more afraid than I was before. It's mouth never moved at any point. But I could hear it's voice in my head clear as a bell. It said to me in a very demonic voice "Do you know who I am". I replied "You are the Devil". It laughed hysterically at me. I thought then and there that I had for sure died and I was in Hell for all eternity. As the figure kept laughing all of a sudden it disappeared and everything in the park was moving again. Definitely one of worst things that I have ever had happen to me.

@@AngelGroves Ha, it's true; it was excruciating waiting for the sequels! Linklater did something similar with _Boyhood_ , filming it over twelve years with the same cast as we watch the main character grow from six years old to eighteen years old by the end! I sincerely loved your reaction to this. My younger sister asked me to video this for her, while she was on holiday. I was revising for professional exams and as it was starting about 1 am, I stayed up to ensure it videoed. So I began watching and was hooked from the opening music & train journey. When we were young, my sister & I would get the train in Dublin to an aunt and uncle in Galway (with a cousin to, well, babysit, I suppose) so a trains mean holidays for me. I had been to Bavaria for holidays the previous year and the Austrian scenery reminded me of the Bavarian countryside. Medieval history at university gave me a fierce interest in German & Austrian Kultur. I adored this film and the harpsichord scene always gets me. One other suggestion; if you liked 'You've Got Mail', have you watched Ernst Lubitsch's 'The Shop around the Corner' (1940), with Jimmy Stewart & Margaret Sullivan?

Before Sunrise (1995) Angel, I have an admittedly insane idea, but if I don't ask you this it's just, uh, you know, it's gonna haunt me the rest of my life. Um... I want to keep giving you facts, y'know. I have no idea what your situation is, but, uh, but I feel like we have some kind of, uh, connection for random facts. Right? •So the idea for this film came from similar events in both director Richard Linklater and co-writer Kim Krizan's youth. Krizan rode around Europe on trains, meeting people from all over and while in Paris, met a man from Norway and ended up walking around the city all night with him. Similarly, Linklater once spent the entire night walking around Philadelphia with a woman he met by chance, named Amy. While Krizan swears she never saw the Norwegian man again, Linklater kept in touch for a while with Amy until one day she just disappeared and it wasn't until 2010 that he found out that she had passed away from an accident right before the release of Before Sunrise. •Linklater intentionally left out subtitles in the opening sequence with the couple arguing on the train but anyone who speaks German could translate their conversation easily, the gist of it is the man reads an article about how 70,000 women are addicted to alcohol and then relates to how his wife is easily one of the 70,000, she argues back that of the two, he is the alcoholic, to which he replies "I have a reason to do it. I'm married to you!" •Linklater spent 9 months on casting because he really wanted to find the right people to play Jesse and Céline and he had doubts about casting Ethan Hawke because he looked so young but after seeing him perform in a New York play, immediately offered him the role. Meanwhile for Céline, there were a few young actresses in the running including a young Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow before Julie Delpy snagged the role. •Throughout the film, there are numerous references to writer James Joyce and his classic novel "Ulysses": both stories take place on June 16th, running into the early hours of June 17th. Both involve a journey around a single City and a visit to a local graveyard and much like the author himself, James Joyce, Jesse spends a long time wandering around the cities of Europe instead of going home. •In the first scene, Céline is reading "Madam Edwarda/ Le Mort/Historia de l'oeil" by Georges Bataille while Jesse is reading "All I need is Love" by Klaus Kinski. •The Ferris wheel Jesse and Céline ride in Vienna is a real attraction called the "Wiener Riesenrad" or "Riesenrad" for short. It was constructed in 1897 and has been featured or shown in numerous films including 1949's The Third man, 1973's Scorpio and the 1987 James Bond action thriller, The Living Daylights. •Contrary to popular belief, the film and its sequels weren't improvised as many have been led to believe. Linklater, Hawke and Delpy have all stated that the dialogue was not only off the page but had numerous contributions from its actors for which they received co-writing credits on Before Sunset and Before Midnight but they do not have a co-writing credit for Before Sunrise due to Kim Krizan's refute that they didn't contribute on Before Sunrise. •The album that Jesse and Céline are listening to in the booth is "Come Here" by singer Kath Bloom. Linklater was a fan of hers and the attention Bloom received from the film inspired her to release new music. •The war that Céline was mentioned was the Croatian war of independence, which ran from 1991 to 1995 between Croatia and Serbia / Yugoslavia. •Before the sequels, people were wondering whether or not Jesse and Celine would ever run into each other again, Richard Linkletter said that the film as a whole is supposed to be a litmus test for how a person views Romance. If you are romantic at heart, you'd believe they would meet again. If you were a skeptic, you'd believe that they wouldn't and for the indecisive or inexperienced, you'd just be left wondering...

I've read the original screenplay written by Richerd Linklater (the director) and his writing partner, Kim Krizan. There were quite a few changes made before the dialogue was put on film. Apparently, Hawk and Delpy weighed in at this point to work with the director to make the dialogue their own. That is why it feels so natural.

I love the short, touching moment of the two in the listening booth sneaking glances at each other but always turning away. You can see they already admire and love each other's company more than they thought they ever would. I also really like the next morning's montage of the places they wandered to. The locations all now empty but full of meaning for the two who spent time together in those places. We as viewers also know the meaning of those locations and the conversations that took place there.

Actually, although they weren't credited, Ethan and Julie rewrote parts of the script with the director while they were shooting. And the following two movies are full collaborations between the director and the two actors. The three of them won an Oscar for the script for the second movie. They knocked that one out of the park, although I loved the first movie, I was floored by the second. (And yeah, of course the third one is great too, but by then it was expected).

I had a Before Sunrise moment years ago and then a Before Sunset a few weeks ago, it was kinda hilarious 😂. Storytime: seven years ago, I met this girl in a party and we really had a great time talking about books, great/terrible adaptations, and stuff... But then our ages became the topic for a second: I was 21 and she was 14; I look younger, she looks older, so the confusion was understandable 😅. Anyway, I got upset, because we clicked so well, even with our shyness 😕... So we just took separated ways. And then, two weeks ago, I went out late to go to the market in a hurry and, boom, she was there, walking out of the house across the street! We were surprised by that and, after a few seconds, we found out that WE'VE BEEN NEIGHBORS OUR WHOLE LIVES 😳🙀!!! We've been going out/back during different times of the day, never encountering each other this whole time; if I didn't get distracted with my writing (published author here), we'd never meet again 🤗😅! Now that we're both adults (I'm 28, she's 21), we're seeing a day to go out and catch up, and, well, see where this can go; wish me luck, guys 😄🤗. Edit 01 (october 4th 2023): we have busy schedules (we're both in colleges, she has another extracurricular programs while I have books to write/edit), so we just had a few quick conversations here and there waiting for us to have a free time ^^. My most recent book, Trono de Rosas (Throne of Roses), was published last month, on september 15th, I gave her a copy of it, so we'll have a topic ready to go on a future date 🤗. Hahaha'. Final edit: one quick conversation, and we realized we're no longer the persons we liked back then. She's more serious and I'm more "what does this button do?", we had far different types now (now she prefers down-to-earth guys while I'm into eccentric and unique women that love different cultures to know about), so we took the decision of just keep that night from years ago in our hearts and live our lives separately. No Before Midnight for us 🤗😅.

Awwww, you never did return for Before Sunset, did you? At least, not here on your channel. I adore this entire series. The cinematography, the dialogue, the chemistry, the gentle, naturalistic flow of the whole thing....and, of course, the universal yearnings it reawakens in me. It's nearly perfect insofar as any film can be. When I'm asked about my favorite movie trilogies, I usually trot out much more cinematically ambitious fare: Lord of the Rings....or maybe the first three Alien movies with Back to the Future an honorable mention. But if I'm being completely honest, I may just love spending quiet time with Jesse and Celine even more than any of those franchises. I don't know - depends on mood, I suppose. And, yes, it's so easy to fall for Julie Delpy's Celine here - her easy manner, her accent, her thoughts on everything, and, certainly, her fresh, luminous beauty. If you actually haven't yet, I'd HIGHLY recommend watching both Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

Thank you for reacting to Before Sunrise. It's always lovely to see someone experience it for the first time. I don't watch a huge number of romantic movies but this trilogy is right up there in my mind. I love Somewhere in Time (1980) too, though as that has time travel I guess it's more a sci-fi/Romance mix, like The Terminator (1984)? For straight romance movies I tend to go further back to things like Brief Encounter (1945) or Casablanca (1942).

I've been on the road all my life and my life is full of these experiences. I've fallen in love and had to leave those people behind all my life It's full of experiences like this for those of us that can't sit still. It's sad, but it's what we give to see everything.

Oh, perfect. I'll be doing the next in a few months (trying to wait some in between, to get more of the full experience), and maybe you can watch the next one then as well! Also, thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the reaction, and thanks for your comment!

@@AngelGroves You're a lot more disciplined than me; after seeing the first one and finding out there was a sequel(the third one hadn't been made yet) I just had to watch it as soon as humanly possible to find out what happened! 😄

Thank you for doing this reaction! I'm the same as you... Romance movies are not my favorite and this movie was recommended to me so many times but when I googled it, the promo poster was such a turn off lol the typical 90's romantic comedy type of poster... but! I'm glad I watch them because MY GOD, my mind was blown away. These films are brilliant in their own way.

I can't wait for you to watch the sequels. They're just as good, if not better. However, to get the full experience of the story you should wait 9 years. lol jk

hahaha, I actually will be waiting a little in between, though I wanted to watch the next one immediately. I'm trying to give myself some of the experience of waiting, but yes, there's no way I'll be waiting as long as everyone else had to! Maybe a month. lol Thanks for your comment! I'm excited for the next ones! This one was incredible.

Great reaction - I love the comment below referencing Joyce, Bataille, and Kinski; I need to process that - btw, if you like Shakespeare, why not do a Shakespeare movie reaction? Maybe Angelic Conversation from Jarman, based on the sonnets, or Macbeth w Fassbender, or Titus from Julie Taymor, or Much Ado from Branagh - anyway, re romantic movies, some favorites are Umbrellas of Cherbourg, In the Mood for Love, Casablanca, a Vertigo/La Jetee double bill, World of Apu, Before Trilogy, 2021 West Side Story, Piano, Philadelphia Story, Jules and Jim, 1946 Beauty and Beast, L' Atlante, 1927 Sunrise, and I agree w comment below about Eternal Sunshine and Her, and also The Fly

To those that are asking about the sequels, those on Patreon have convinced her to hold off for a bit in between each to let them digest. No time frame has been set, but I'll likely be pushing for Before Sunset (my favorite) in 4-6 months.

Those are terrific suggestions! Thank you! Wow, I had forgotten all about French Kiss. It's been so, so long. I haven't seen any of the others, though. Also, yes, I really enjoy watching great international/foreign films. Subtitles are fine with me! "Amelie" is a really great recommendation. Thanks, again, for your comment!

Good romance suggestions? Well that can mean anything from romcoms to real tear jerkers. Off the top or my head, two of my favorite romcoms that involve European travel are "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline, and "Only You" with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. Not sure how you feel about foreign movies and subtitles, but Jean Pierre Jeunet is a French director I love who did "Amelie", one of my top favorite movies, and then later did "A Very Long Engagement" which is a romance set during WW1. Both good choices, also another of my top favorites is an Italian film "Cinema Paradiso", which isn't just a romance, but is very romantic. My line is, that it's a movie about the three things in this world that any person truly needs to learn about and master in order to truly be complete as a person. Life, love, and movies!

Don’t get me wrong, I love the cheesiness of some romance movies every now and then. But personally, my favorites are the more down to earth and somewhat complex films like this, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Her. The sequels of this movie are also well done but very different emotionally.

Thanks so much for your comment. I really loved it and agree with it a lot. I was JUST thinking of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for the first time in years. I haven't seen it in so long, and it's one of my favorites as well. I should do a re-watch for sure. I'm looking forward to watching the sequels to this one! Thanks, again, for watching and your comment!

Be sure to watch to Before Sunset and Before Midnight. This trilogy isn't bad at all. Basically because it's not bullshit. Just a realistic way of how people meet and get to know each other. The story is right to the point and nothing forced in the story either. I also like Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy together as a couple. They both seem really believable together.

I remember that movie staring Robin Williams, Annabella Sciorra and Cuba Gooding Jr. God do I miss Robin Williams. He was one of the absolute best actors ever. His range as an actor and comedian was boundless. I have to go on record and say that he is truly a legend.
