The Best Snorkeling Near Vancouver, BC?! #whiterock #pointroberts
Holy!! What an epic two days of freediving and snorkeling... First, we hit the herring jackpot while exploring the White Rock Pier in Surrey, BC and second, I had a phenomenal time searching the oceans bottom off of Lily Point in Point Roberts, Washington. It was a nice welcome back after a two month hiatus from diving. Damn it feels good to be back!

Just leaving White Rock Pier, probably the best snorkel I've ever done!! Beautiful jellyfish, the most amount of fish in one place I've ever seen and I also got surprised with a huge bait ball at the end! Lots of life! Didn't even use a weight belt. Hood off, no gloves. It was heaven! Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. You rock dude. I got tons of clips ❤Much love homie!

Wow! Thanks!! Brings back a ton of memories. Grew right close to that pier. (1950s). I was around 8 when Mom bought me a snorkel and mask. (no flippers). Those crabs haven't changed a bit (that's me - now old and funny). I recall a young dolphin got stranded on a sand bar and a bunch of older kids pulled it back to open water. I never knew what species it was and/or if they frequent these waters anymore but they sure did then. Anyways, good on you for living such a healthy life. The ocean is as good as it gets be it White Rock or Maui - I've swam them both. Excellent camera work!!!!!!! Those herring shots? You nailed it. Old Man and the Sea signs off!!

Thanks so much for the comment and providing a bit of history. It's always nice to think of the people who came before me and who will come after. Once the ocean captures your soul it's a hard thing to leave behind. I agree, I can dive muddy sand banks for coral reefs in Bermuda and still find the beauty. Hmm, I wonder if it was a harbor porpoise? Or maybe a Pacific White Sided dolphin? I'd love to see one of those while diving. I found a deceased harbor porpoise on the beach in Point Roberts, WA once. It looked like it had been hit by a boat. As sad as it was, it was interesting to look at one up close.

Grew up in White Rock. Use to go to the Pier often. Just to clear something up from your description below the video, the White Rock Pier is NOT in Surry, BC as you state but in White Rock, BC. That is why it is called the White Rock Pier. While Surry is a district that has several small cities and towns in it such as Gilford or Walley, White Rock is not one of them. It is it's own jurisdiction. Plus you little friend is a Tent Caterpillar, which are common in North America and not a invasive species, just a pain to people who's trees get infested with then. . Good video.

@@PNWSamson No Problem. Plus the tent caterpillars are the ones you see that have h=large, sometimes huge, nests in trees that is made from the thread they make. Thanks! Not much at all. The insta 360 has an AI chip that does a lot of the color grading and denoising. It's pretty sick. All I ever really do is crank the contrast a bit to make the darks darker and everything look more crisp.

How cold is the water here? Do you need to use a wetsuit even in the middle of summer?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 13 күн бұрын
It really depends on the area. I dove off the west coast of Vancouver Island today and it was chilly. I'm happy I had my 7mm suit. Off the White Rock Pier a 3mm would have been perfect. The surface temperature warms up so I don't bother with 5mm gloves and socks but you can't go wrong with buying a 7mm 2 piece open cell wetsuit. That will do you year round. I made this video that might help explain things a bit. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gqmTg5WUy7CpZXU.htmlsi=YlZLJmtbKK5D2RaV

@PNWSamson I live a long way from Vancouver but have family in Whiterock..I'm mainly asking because I'd love to go snorkeling next time I'm there. For the amount of times I get to the ocean it's really not worth me buying a wetsuit..

@@TheMarky26 ah makes sense. Yeah, buy a cheap surf suit, cheap set of fins, mask and snorkel and your set! Might not have long but should be good for an hour or so. Just watch for boats, kayaks and paddle boards!

White Rock has a massive tidal flow from day to day. It's consistently being flushed by the passing water from the Strait of Georgia. The water quality is fine... Commercial crab traps are set just past the breakwater. With that said, I've dove in some pretty nasty areas. Some people live in a bubble, I'm not overly concerned.

Totally fair, I made a comment about that. I've done the same thing though so I'm not pointing fingers. Beats catch and release with a hook and line I suppose! But again, your point is valid. Happy you liked it! Cheers.

unlike those made from carbon fiber, fiberglass forms are repairable.

I'm not really sure what you mean. The fins I'm trying out in the video are made from fiberglass. The fins that I was using beforehand are 75% carbon fiber and 25% s-glass fibre. Lots of fins are made some pure carbon fiber though. The Cetma Mantras for example are pure carbon fiber.

What you are smelling is sulphide. It's produced by bacteria as they digest dead phytoplankton. It's 100% natural and does not indicate poor water quality. I dove a remote pristine stretch off of Vancouver Island last weekend and the beach also stank of sulphide.
