1. The slow introduction: it symbolizes the feeling of aggression and loss that the band suffers due to their loss. 2. Solo #1: represents the whole feeling of anger of Kirk Hammett. 3. The interlude (slow part of the intro): it represents the acceptance of the loss of the 3 remaining members, and the going forward in their honor. 4. Solo # 2: represents how deeply the death of Cliff Burton has affected them. 5. On the return of the heavy part, they pay tribute to Cliff by reading the poem, his last composition, and continue with the tribute doing just what Cliff would have expected of them, to move forward with the music. 6. Upon reaching the end, the song returns to the classic style of the introduction, symbolizing the memory of Cliff, which will never end. The final riff is suddenly interrupted, symbolizing the end of Cliff's life, cut short by death at such a young age. P.S. thanks to the autor of this comment
@ros9764
@ros9764 3 жыл бұрын
I always thought the song was about a person's life. They are being born and their childhood is happy like the intro, then they learn more and more about reality with the heavy riffs, they start accepting that they have to go through that, their adult life has a lot of ups amd downs and it's a mess like the riffs up until their slow death which starts from the part they talk in the song and die peacefully with the part that started it all, the feeling they had when they were born...

@Shaquile O'atmeal Music interpretation, especially with the lack of lyrics, usually is. The most we can go by, if the band doesn't clarify 100%, is knowledge based off the "official" subject matter- in this case, the death of Cliff Burton. Five distinct compositions, broken with a spoken word poem, could signify the five stages of grief.

Same man, sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend in 04 when we were young. He was my brother really. Horrible accident. This song, you can just feel their pain and loss in the music...it always hits me in the chest. It's actually something I can't listen to on the regular because of that. This was probably the first time I've heard this song in a few years. It doesn't get any easier with time, but you learn to accept. Now Ben lives in me and my son with his name.

I got the vinyl box set when it came out. It's amazing BTW has the Seattle 89 concert on 3LPs. Anywhoo, when I listed to this song it hit me. Music is really amazing and I will always be grateful to Metallica for the art they made no matter what they do. Those first 5 albums are just so great!

A thing I love about Metallica instrumentals is they have all these killer riffs they’ve written and it’s literally the band figuring how do we fit them all in a song. And they make it work it perfectly.

Amazing how a song about life can bear a perfect metaphor for it. This whole song feels like a buildup to some glorious vocals until you hit the end, realise you didn't you didn't get what you expected and, instead of being disappointed, you realize that you had everything you could ever ask for. And then it fades to nothing.

You really need to listen to the last minute of "To Live is to Die" and immediately go into "Dyers Eve" without a break in between, it is the way we all listened to it on CD, cassette tape and I am sure it is the same on vinyl as well.

The second solo always stands out to me. Who ever wrote it, whether it was James or Kirk are speaking through that solo. It sounds like James playing as his vibrato is better. Wouldn't surprise me if the person playing at the time was crying tears all over their guitar. I get the feeling they were just utterly devastated.

The intro reflects the shock of cliffs death. The heavy section punctuated with a wailing solo, is the anger and grief consuming your mind. Then the groove slows down and gets more contemplative, culminating in the clean riff where you can almost feel them switch from mourning his death to celebrating his life. Another solo, into a big triumphant riff section to recognize their achievements in the time they had with him. Then, back to the main riff, he will always be missed and the pain of tragedy will always be there in some form. But life eventually returns to something like normal, as it fades back into the melodic section. Metallica are truly genius, told a whole story and didn’t say a singe word.

When I first heard this song as a teenager I didn't know any of the context behind it and yet I could still feel the sense of loss and sadness that the music stirred within me. It's incredible how music alone can just trigger those parts of your brain without any words to explain why you feel that way. The interlude later in the song always makes me picture a beach at sunset and feel a sense of sadness and moving on with your life.
