Nah, Bob Rock convinced them to write shorter songs. They came into the studio with the material and he cut it to shreds. There's footage of him and James arguing about what he wrote vs what Bob wanted. No shade, it launched them into the stratosphere, but the honesty of songwriting in the previous albums is undeniable. When left to their own devices (Death Magnetic and Hardwired) they reverted back to longer songs.

it's those guitar harmonies after the second chorus, where you think it's building up to a solo but it's actually building up to fake you out with a whole new guitar riff 16 measures before the solo even takes off. and then the solo takes off, and then there's the incredible unified riff after it, and then he sings "myself is after me..." and then that laugh! I love this song so much.

I met the band in their fanclub meet & greet back in 2009 in Helsinki and asked James when they were finally going to play Frayed Ends of Sanity live. He joked around saying they would save it until they are in their 80s :) Luckily five years later we were able to vote for the song and got to see it live for the first time. Thankfully my fellow Finns also voted for it, because the voted songs in a bunch of other countries were really lame picks like "Enter Sandman" or "Seek and Destroy" as if those songs weren't already on the setlist in most shows anyway.

I'll thank all the Finns eternally for being the only nation that stayed true to the culture and requested this almighty masterpiece to be executed live. I was tripping on acid once when I was younger...back in 1989 when Justice came out...I was with some friends and this song was playing...it made me feel so uncomfortable, I remember telling my friend to turn it off and he did...its rubbed me the wrong way ever since. It lives up to its name...I felt the "Frayed Ends of Sanity" in my acid tripping mind...lol

The riff behind the solo is probably the hardest thing to play from MetallicA, and the beginning chant says all we own, we owe. And old saying you may remember from the wizard of oz. It refers to the company store days.

It's pretty well known with musicians that Dyer's Eve and Frayed Ends are 2 of the most difficult songs to play live. That is the reason they don't play it or Dyer's Eve that much. Sometimes they barely pull it off when they do. Lars struggles greatly with Dyers and James struggles with certain parts of playing guitar/vocals with Frayed.... then there's the higher pitched vocals thrown in there. These two songs are behemoths for a band to play in their 20s. Metallica is pushing 60.
