Wow!!!! Just in time!!!!! I was about to start doing all of these techniques from 'Slow Russian', 'Fast Russian', 'TPRS' videos, etc. I love analyzing sentences. But, I was going to write/type it. I started by pausing video, writing sentences, play, pause, write, play, pause, write, etc. I never knew about that transcription option. Thank you so much for telling us about that. Some other uses I have already found. Viewers like double subs, but it's a lot of work for the youtubers. Well, I just watched a video with Russian subtiltles, and watched the 'English' transcriptions on the side. So, double subs are now possible also. It highlights the sentence being spoken, so you can pause it and study it while you're watching it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now have double subs on everything I wished it was on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have tried a lot of Russian teachers on KZfaq. I just started watching your videos today. You are the only teacher that explained the hard and soft signs and hard and soft consonants so I could understand them. I think your learning method with videos is going to work. That was more or less the way I learned Swedish many years ago. I am excited to learn Russian, but I haven't made much progress. I'm hoping all this can change now.

That's the right way of ACTIVE LISTENING, when you're not just watching a video while washing the dishes, but trying to understand WHY something is said, being attentive means being productive! Very very good tips, Fedor! I'd want to suggest wikitionary as a dictionary, for it gives all the forms of a word, synonyms, colloquial phrases. Helps a lot!

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. It's understandable as the course only lasted about two and a half hours per week. Spoken Russian iremains a barrier to me unlike German and Dutch. I'm glad i'm already doing what you said. When I learned english I first studied the grammar, then I started to read basic sentences in texts and then elaborate sentences. After I got advanced in reading and writing I started to watch movies, first with subtitles in my native language, then with subtitles in english and then without subtitles. With listening now mastered, I started to play multiplayer games in english speaking servers. I am now repeating the process with russian.

Though it may be less efficient in terms of conversing, I really enjoy doing this with russian lyrics and trying to understand each word. Gonna try this next!!

I may be late coming to this video Fedor, but I have to add that the very method you explain here is one that has worked well for me in the past. Of course when one gets to finer points of of accents and pronunciations, in the past I have used some techniques and repetition. I am having a hard time finding sites where native speakers would be willing to interact face to face with those wishing to improve. I have been disappointed by some sites that fools and children get on the sites to mock, cuss and are generally horrible...

I believe that this is the best technique that allows you learn russian language quickly and easly thank you so much for this ♥♥♥

I used the same method to learn English but I couldn't remember it right. I was being intellectually curious. Nice video. At the beginning I didn't learn anything about grammar. Just the basics. Nice videos.

One of the best tipps you can give fedor😎 i never knew about the transcription option🤩 will love it by now. Because we can learn how the original language is spoken:) It's more helpful to download the track of 'slow russian' and listen to it everyday while you are reading the texts loudly at home and also listen to it everyday while you are driving to work/school. I suggest reading and listening to it for around 2 times in the evening and repeat it on the next morning. It may help to copy the text! Or write it in a tiny book as i do haha write the words you dont know under them. That's how i also learn to write in cyrillic^^ My favourite channel on youtube!😁 you explain everything in detail and more understandable! Its clear and structured. That's interesting! This video reminds me a particular technique used by a famous Italian polyglot, Luca Lampariello. He defined this method as "double translation". Very cool way to learn. I started learning Russian last week, and I have been starting with a similar format. Now that I have a basic concept on the alphabet and can pronounce words (primitively) What I have been doing is taking a song for instance, with russian subtitles and using google translate (but with the microphone) and saying the word constantly until google translate can understand me, then documenting that word.. it's helping me say things out loud and also what other variations sound similar.. for instance.. I was trying to say "Я утопаю" .. and google kept saying "I'm stupid.." .. and I was like.. WHY!?.. then realized I forgot to say "oo" in the beginning. But now I know how to say I'm stupid.. so... there's that.

You can make ANY Russian video with subtitles into a Slow Russian video by turning down the speed of the video. Hit the "settings" button on the lower right corner of the video (looks like a gear), then click "Plackback Speed". Start with .75 and see if that's slow enough (slowed down by 25%) and then go slower if needed. Adjusting playback speed was a game changer on KZfaq, especially for educational videos.

If you want a quick translator, use DeepL. Install the app on your laptop. Select the text you want to translate and press Ctrl-C twice. Super fast translation.

Omg I been writing down single words n English meanings and been flipping back and fourth but this is so much easier for whole sentences I would still write down some words tho just to be sure incase you have a blank and need to refer to your notes.

Well you got it pretty much on the head. My native language is spanish I came to this country and along 2 friend I saw the difference in the english pronunciation. While me and a buddy would watch cartoon everything in english our other buddy would find better just to hang around and Spanish speakers, so till today he sounds like tony Montana and we got it faster because of that exercise. So yes I know first hand that works, thanks for reminding it I have been trying to learn some Русский with you for the past couple weeks and I gotta try this out.

This is basically the approach used by Assimil for the last 50 years or so. Many accomplished polyglots use the Assimil materials to get started with new languages. What I would add is that once you deeply understand the text, you should memorise the interesting bits and learn to say them fluently. Then you begin to build up a quiver of authentic language you can use in real-time conversations.

My Russian professor in college recommends this method too. Отлично!

This seems like a tedious method, but it's honestly the best method. As a linguist, I've used VERY similar methods to dissect Spanish and English and French. People can tell when you take the time to learn and analyze, rather than just listen on a "surface level".

This method will immensely help you improving your vocabulary and learning common phrases in Russian. However, the biggest problem for Russian learners is speaking, not understanding. To overcome this, I hide the Russian column (I do what you do in excel) and try to say the English sentences in Russian. This really helps.

For all you guys that can't turn on the Russian transcript there is a way. Go to the three dots and then add translation change the subtitles from English to Russian the only problem I find is that you can only copy one line at a time

your t-shirt brings to my mind a north brazilian expression that for me is english-untranslatable (literally "not, what not), but means something like: - Do you want to ... (something you know one may want so badly) - U bet no boi! (means "I want that so badly, you can't imagine how") Can you translate that expression to English?

Something really important I feel you didn't mention in the video is that this single technique can be used to learn an entire language, literally. If a person doesn't know what else to do, they can just keep listening to sentences and understanding them and listening to more on and on until they literally understand almost all that they hear. No need for the horrors of memorizing vocabulary or any other annoyances or distractions. Example: you could do like 900 hours of study with just this one method and at that point you'll realize you are so advanced that with just 100 hours trying to talk with a teacher, browsing some grammar books, and fixing up some small bits of confusion you'll be a SOLID high intermediate with a massive passive vocabulary (the teacher will constantly compliment it). Contrary to what you do though, I think the technique is actually better done with the use of technology though, so for several languages that I have used this VERY VERY EXTENSIVELY I have leveraged Workaudiobook, Nova Text Aligner (poor losers can skip it, not free), and instead of using the nearly useless 10 years obsolete Google Translate of course I use Deepl. With Deepl you don't have to waste all the time copy & pasting, you can hit CTRL C C and it will pop-up immediately. I've found it invaluable to jump right into the translation of an adult or teen book I already know in English as an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER ON DAY 1 as long as you can find the translation AND audiobook for the whole thing in Russian or your target language. I'm experimenting back-and-forth with using super hard materials vs simple stories for beginners. Both have their pluses and minuses, will take me several more years and languages to reach a conclusion on what is truly best I expect.

I was doing this until i read that i "should" read one of those 500 pages books of grammar... but now i realize that i learnt a lot this way so i continued doing it.
