The Best Subaru Oil Cooler "Kit"!

So this is something that I have wanted to do not he 05 STI for a few months now and it is finally happening! Decided to piece together an oil cooler for the car. There are plenty of great Plug and Play Oil cooler kits for Subarus out there but being able to fit one wherever you want and get the lone length just how you want it is so much better. If your looking for something that is simple and easy to install I would highly suggest a PnP set up vs making one.
But I decided to use an External cooler in congestion with the OEM cooler for a few reasons as covered in the video. Hopefully this information helps you out as well as the install process!

Videos like this are why yours is the best Subaru mod channel around. I would like to add on that I think the only scenario where completely deleting the stock oil heat exchanger makes any sense is for a dedicated track-only vehicle. The benefits that it offers, as you covered, are just too great to lose in a machine that spends any amount of time on the street. I actually wish I could find one that was bigger than the stock part, because if there were such a thing, you'd probably never need add a secondary oil cooler *except* on a track machine.

Awesome video, & great info + insight dude. This is the 1st time I've heard anyone else thoroughly explain why its a benefit to keep the OEM oil cooler when adding the external oil cooler. I attempted to delete the oem or stock oil cooler and went with the mishimoto expansion plate against the frame. With my tomei headers I didn’t have the clearance to do so. I put the oem one back on and ran it just as you did with your setup. You might have run into a similar issue with your setup back then since it was tight to begin with your killer 🐝 headers

I thought it was a bad idea to have a cooler as the highest point of an oil system? I have no idea from personal experience/ just read it on forums.
@Black16STI
@Black16STI 3 жыл бұрын
Can be bad for airflow when you have a FMIC; you want air in the nose and out the hood. Injecting air into the hood scoop with a fmic creates turbulence and high pressure pockets not allowing fresh air in through the nose. Not an expert but take that for what it's worth. If your daily driving and don't do track use (Tracks w/ turns), i wouldn't worry about it too much.
@chandlerbraaten847
@chandlerbraaten847 3 жыл бұрын
@@Black16STI I've heard that theory before but I don't think it's true. If it was the radiator would be negatively impacted in stock form as it sits in the same opening. Edit: my biggest issue with it is the oil "cooler" sitting on top of the engine getting heat soaked like the TMIC is prone to doing and becoming an oil "warmer". 😄
@Black16STI
@Black16STI 3 жыл бұрын
@@chandlerbraaten847 Yea i feel it and what you're saying. I think it has 'just' thinking behind the concept of the airflow and it's draw backs are mainly seen on track and not daily driving. While it may 'work' being setup that way, it's likely very far from 'optimal' I've also heard that it's not very good to have the oil cooler core at the highest point in the oiling system. But then again, def not an expect at this.

Hey Tanner, just curious as to to which line runs to which port on the cooler? Is the hot oil going to the top of the cooler, or the bottom? If when the thermostat opens, is it pushing oil up through the cooler, so when it is closed will it will hold oil in the cooler, and if this is the case it will stop the oil from draining during an oil change. If hot oil is going to the top of the cooler, wont all oil drain back to the sump until the thermostat opens and allows oil to pass through, so pre-filling the cooler after install is not really necessary, just adding it to the sump should do. Wanting to do this upgrade, but curious as to the direction of flow.

The crazy part of me says “I wonder if I were to engineer a intercooler that utilizes the AC low pressure line coming off of the evap core line to pump cold refrigerant through a series of channels to bring down the intake temperature before and after track runs” Would be really awesome if I could make it happen just don’t know how well it would work and idk if it would be a benefit to be running AC while on the track in order to keep lower intake temps. But it could be beneficial to do the same thing but for a oil cooler to help reduce oil temps before or after runs.

@DGXJ94
@DGXJ94 3 жыл бұрын
@@Omegacron37 Yeah that’s why I don’t really know how well it would work, if it was a truly viable option it would have been done already, the thermal load would be ridiculous and probably require a massive dryer, condenser, and evap system, plus the heat would compress the cool refrigerant and heat it up so in essence it would operate more or less like a heat exchanger and less like an actual “cooler”

Oil coolers are a slight pain point for me right now... this video was helpful but makes me rethink installing mine since it's not entirely necessary. Got a kit from ConceptZ Performance for my vq35 last year, it's a same size 19 row Setrab core w/ a Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate. Went to install it 2 or so weeks ago, found out that apparently the awd vq has a different oil filter location on the front passenger side of the block, whereas the rwd vq has it around the corner on the actual side of the passenger side. This is relevant because of that adapter for the sandwich plate. The supplied adapter looks just like the polished one shown, however the stock one that threads into the block is the reverse of that and about 1.5 inches longer. The threads are on the outside on both ends. Needless to say I just did an oil change and put it back in the box for the time being.

@@douglasbrill1376 Actually, this _is_ a genuine concern. The oil pressure will drop every time the thermostat in the sandwich plate opens. You can see it happen in the video when the temperature reaches 85 degrees Celsius. At idle, this isn't a problem, but if you're at full chat, it _could_ be.

@@douglasbrill1376 I should clarify, the drop in oil pressure is momentary and minimal. It shouldn't be a problem, but YMMV. As long as you have sized the oil pump correctly for your bearing clearances, weight of oil, and intended usage, the engine will remain healthy.

I’ve been wondering about using the OEM oil Warmer/cooler with an aftermarket oil cooler. The OEM “cooler” actually warms the oil up much faster and keeps it at a steady temp, where as if you just had a regular external oil cooler it would take you significantly longer to reach operating temps.
