With proper maintenance, these chevys are tanks when it comes to the engine. My pops had a 01 Tahoe with the 5.3 and it had k&n intake with axle back mag flows on it and a Diablo tune. He hit red line daily on that sucker and the only parts that eventually went bad was the water pump and the alternator. Tranny started slipping a bit so pops added some oijd of anti slip fix fluid and transmission stoped slipping.

There are 2007 - 2009 GMT900 trucks that did not come with AFM / DOD activated from the factory. If the 8th digit of the VIN is a 2 (L9H) or an 8 (L92) those trucks do not have AFM but still have VVT. After 2009 all GMT900 trucks and following generations have active AFM / DOD. Funny that the vans that used the 5.3s from that generation also do not have active AFM. We have a 2009 Denali with the L9H and it’s a very strong truck. But the GMT800s are legendary vehicles for sure 💪🏻

I have one 2002 Denali and I love it.... I got one with a 226 on it. Lq4 should I change my fluid? It's shifts great. I'm just scared we'll slip after... Once in a very blue moon, after you leave a stop sign it'll rev up and for like a split second and then grab. I don't know if that's the torque converter wearing out or it just needs a fluid change. The fluid is full but it's dark. The guy before me definitely took care of this rig... And I've done a few things to it. Let's just say and I save all the old parts cuz they have potential

2007 and up have really gone downhill with these. They look good and drive great for maybe 100k miles or so, but won’t last nearly as long and it’s not uncommon for the newer ones to have complete transmission failure very early in. 06 and older are the only ones I’d go with.
