This was one of the first ones I watched and I loved it! I started with Heroes vs Villains but when I learned Sandra and Rupert started on the same season it was automatically the next one I had to watch.

well, one could argue the best season shouldn't be one of the first seasons to watch. better start somewhere more mediocre.

Nowadays. When you have an infinite number of TV shows to watch. Showing a mediocre season of a good series to someone is a sure way to scare them away

I started a couple of my friends on Survivor recently, and got them hooked with Pearl Islands. I picked it because it's one of the strongest seasons with arguably the best first episode ever. And it worked! They got hooked, we watched Tocantins next, followed by Panama and China. They still maintain PI is their favourite, and Tocantins didn't go over as well as the others, which I found interesting. I'm setting them up to watch Micronesia, which I think they'll enjoy.

I saw Carter at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first, he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

JUST finished China for the first time ever and it was quite a fun ride! A good blend of character and strategy, a different location, and a satisfying winner. And just as a stray observation from someone who just watched it...wow, I've rarely seen Probst get as dickish without obvious provocation as he gets at the China reunion.

China is one of my all time favorite seasons. It's easily in my top 5. I agree with you that it's weird that it isn't talked about more. Courtney is hilarious, Todd plays an amazing strategic game, and Peih-Gee's fighting spirit is inspirational. The cultural elements are just fantastic. I LOVE that season so much!

totally agree! tocantins is my personal favorite to this day. no other cast of characters has quite reached that level. the only thing I could maybe see working against it as a first watch is that it could set people up for disappointment in regards to winners in general. there aren't that many other winners that were as unanimously beloved to both fellow players and audiences (maybe Africa?). I heard someone say once that you know Survivor is a great TV show because the people you want most to win almost never do (or even get close) and yet you still keep coming back every season knowing that to be the case lol

Yesterday I showed my best friend the first episode of Tocantins to get him hooked, I think it worked.

Tocantins is an objectively great season, but I personally didn’t like it as much as others. This is just because I found coach too intolerable to listen too. He is hilarious in his ridiculousness, but for some reason watching him blatantly lie and then get mad at others for doing the same angered me more than it should have.

Pearl Islands was my first season too! There's a moment in episode 1 that reallllly leaned into the theme that hooked me. I was 10...and here I am 18 years later, still watching

I am really curious, What was your opinion on the Outcasts twist?

@@chanyeolsass5201 I watched it with my girlfriend about a week ago to introduce her to survivor. And she honestly hated it. Twists that return voted out players back into the game don't work. But I give kudos to this one as being the least awful of them all since at least it was introduced thematically.

@@chanyeolsass5201 I'll be honest, I didn't even remember it happened until I rewatched it recently. I was so confused because I remembered who the runner-up was, and when they got voted out I thought I was going insane. Once I realized, I was so surprised that they started that so early on in the show. I don't like any time that voted-out players return, but I agree with the person above who said at least this one was relevant to the theme. Also, it happened early enough on that you kind of forgot about it...it's not like it happened at the Final Four

Pearl Islands, China, and Tocantins are my go to recommendations for old school survivor. I always make separate recommendations for old school and new school

@Delia McCarthy I agree. Personally, I ABSOLUTELY loved it. However, in contrast to my view, my friend disliked it due to it's theme as you mentioned.

This is the reason why I didn't include it. If it was the exact same season without the tribe divisions, it'd probably be on here

Cook Islands was my first season and it got me hooked instantly

I like Cook Islands a lot as well, but I know a lot of ppl don't love it. It's an important season though because it's Ozzy, Yul, Parvati, Jonathan, and Candice's first season and all of them have played again... some multiple times. I would say it's a good season after someone is hooked but before watching a lot of the returnee seasons (Micronesia/HvV)

MvGx was my first! I found it easy to follow with Zeke and Adam's confessionals. I haven't seen every season (I don't plan on going back to watch the first), but I recently rewatched it and found myself paying more attention to some Gen Xers than the first time.

I just showed that season to my cousin and she loves it!

MvGx was my first, and it took me awhile to care enough about social game (and players from the older seasons) enough to watch the old school seasons, because they're so slow. I found it easy enough to follow MvGX because Adam and Zeke were there to guide us. I also love strategy, so the new items (or somewhat old Immunity Idols) added to the fun! The only season older than HvV that I've finished without skipping any episodes (like I kinda did with both Stephanie's seasons) is All Stars. I did like the OG players in 40 though.

Exile Island is awesome and Pearl Islands is great if you want really old school!

i agree that they are fast paced seasons. However, DvG has Christian who acts as an amazing storyteller/narrator in his confessionals and he does a great job keeping the viewer in the loop of what his plans and the plans of others are. Same with MvGX with players like Hannah, Zeke and David who are good storytellers themselves. I started with DvG so im a bit biased it. I think the pacing was fine and they never stray from the reward and immunity challenges format which makes it a bit easier to follow. Some of the advantages are a bit hard to wrap your head around however.

Gabon for the win

Totally recommend Gabon if you want some laughs (Panama - Exile Island is a close second)

@@faIIen_angle I watched Gabon last year after only watching 32-40 live, 31, 28, 15, and 9. I loved Gabon and I mean it! Great characters, great location, and pretty good boot order!

gabon is my favorite season but definitely not one to start with. it’s so entertaining bc of how terrible the gameplay and strategy is, and new viewers won’t be able to fully recognize just how much of a shitshow it is

I would recommend watching Gabon after 3-5 seasons so you can fully appreciate how much of a shot mess it is.

Season 40 was tough for me. I started w 39 and since I knew 40 was a all star season I had to plough through all the seasons before that to get to 40 all the while trying to avoid spoilers on social media to get to 40. Much of it while season 40 was being aired.

Samoa was SO much fun even though I wouldn't necessarily recommend with it for someone who had never seen the show lol. People tend to only remember Russell but most of the cast was super entertaining

I really liked Gabon too, and Kenny and Crystal were a huge part of that. I think they're two of the most underrated players in the history of the game.

Michael skupin went to prison for some nasty reasons, so you could call him prison mike, who said that he didn't like the dementors
