For the hematite violet genuine, here’s what I tried, and it made a reasonable dupe: DS lunar black, DS lunar red rock, DS English red earth, DS Italian Venetian red. I mixed all 4. I cannot tell you exactly how much of each I added…I basically kept adjusting each component ‘til it looked close. You can argue that needing 4 tubes to generate a dupe is more expensive. However, you still have the 4 tubes to use for other things. And I’ve found that mixing the Italian Venetian red and English red earth, along with a touch of DS buff titanium, will get you a very nice dupe of another lovely primatek - Minnesota pipestone. I hope this is helpful…

I always love hearing about your favorite colors 😍 I tend to prefer blue violets overall, but I think I'm starting to really appreciate that more pink leaning cobalt violet! I just picked up some Roman Szmal pans to try from their brand, and I can already tell that some of them are going to make it into my superstar list. their quin magenta is spectacularly bright, their cobalt teal rewets like a dream, and the color separation in misty morning almost reminds me of opals 💙

Such an awesome video. PS I’ve been eyeing those stamps of yours. Can’t decide which set I want to try first! Each one has elements I love. I love that you not only explain your favorites, but go into why. I also love that you go into the pigments and how they react.

Schmincke came out with new sets of granulating watercolors and they have a color that is called Vulcano Brown. It looks very similar to Hematite Violet Genuine but it's made with regular pigments. I'm planning on getting some of these colors... I wanted to try these for a year now and I think its time to get 3 tubes just to see how I can use them in my paintings. Also They have also I think it's Galaxy Black that is made with PB29 and PBk11 that I can use as more like an Indigo "replacement". Real synthetic Indigo PB66 is not that lightfast... PR122 Quin. Magenta is my second most used color on my palette... I don't mess around with yellow that much and I always buy midtone yellow pigments because... I always add red or orange to a normal yellow to mix a wider range. I decided to make my own lightfastness test for Dioxazine Violet this year... I don't have a prefered violet yet. Basically any violet from warm to cool tones. I don't know which one I like better. Sometimes I have custom mixes that I use quite often.

Your new stamps look great. Swatching is so relaxing. I have one scrapbook with swatches by brand and a watercolor scketchbook by color. Three: naturals, colors and mixes. It is nice to sit and memorize the nuances.

IMHO, Carmine is one of Van Gogh's best paints. I also like their Azo Yellow Green, the most transparent of VG yellows, and Payne's Grey. All of them are potent paints and great for mixtures.

Hi ! Is Piemontite Gen Similar to Caput Mortuum from Roman Szmal? It is one of my favorite colours and extremely hard to get where I live, so I am wondering if I can dupe it.

@@nazaretsarfati2407 Quite similar, but a little warmer I'd say. Schmincke has a similar color "chestnut brown".

I love most od the colors you mentioned but for greens my all time favorite is always Aquarius green from of course Aquarius. Have similar color from DS but honestly the Aquarius beats DS by a mile. Also earth colors from Aquarius are my favs. They are a bit more difficult to activate but once you to the colors are just amazing and I love earthy colors a lot

My superstars and most used are ultramarine, nickel azo yellow and geranium red. They also seem to be good across brands. I just bought a tube of Earth Green by White nights. I was surprised because the hue was much more olive than I expected and granulates beautifully. It has become an unexpected favorite and now I rarely reach for my other olive hues. It's a little less yellow and more earthy but fits perfectly for my nature paintings. I have both caput mortum and hematite violet from Roman Szmal and I have found them comparable to DS Hematite Violet and Piemontite.

What a fun video! My superstars are most cobalt colors: i just love the granulation...dark cobalt green deeps- like from Schmincke and winsor and newton are a must have BUT handmade cobalt colors: especially Cobalt Turquoise are by far superior to the big brand makers Cobalts...Anyway great video and thanks for sharing. I love what you put together there, your favorites go together super well. And you have two Naples Yellows in there! 😻Yes, Naples Yellow is my obsession, there you have my superstar, lol. I love Naples Yellow Deep by Winsor and Newton, and if someone wants to take that from me, they will have to rip it from my cold dead hands. And both versions by Lukas are also great.

I would LOVE to know where to get those watercolor tube stamps as well as the search stamp with label lines! So handy and you can configure it any way you want to! I love it !

Very similar to your favorite Carmine, cobalt turqoise and olive green (light) are the same named by white nights. Have you tried those?

I love how detailed your explanations for why you choose each colour always are, it's really helpful when deciding which ones I wanna look into getting myself :D Unfortunately DS Nickel titanate yellow is nothing like Schmincke's Naples yellow, it's cooler, and not as intensely pigmented, vibrant or opaque. I have them both and wouldn't consider it a good substitute... but I do have the new Schmincke Akademie pastel tubes and both the "icy yellow" and "icy orange" are very similar to the Horadam Naples yellow, if anything just a little less dull, although only available in the set. I think the easiest alternative would really be to just put white gouache with quin gold together in one pan and mix them together with a toothpick haha :)

In which video do you talk about Holbein and qor specifically? I get that staining is more of an individual thing with pigments but I found pb27 which is usually very staining to not stain with Holbein same thing with pv23 Holbein. I feel like the fact that they are very finely ground and have no ox gall in them affects this. What is your opinion?

If you search my channel the videos will come up, they are from the last two years, but not very recent. I don't think I have PB27 so cannot say, I also don't do a lot of lifting and in general prefer the non staining colors so I probably just don't have enough experience with those particular colors🤔

For the longest time I avoided ultramarine blue because of the granulation. But the color is so pretty and has a luminosity that you don't find in other colours and I couldn't replicate through mixes. Then I heard about Scmincke Ultramarine finest. Haven't used it in a painting yet but from the swatches and tests I've done it seems promising! Haven't heard of any other brand doing it though. Have you ? My personal super stars are : Quinacridone magenta (PR122) Phtalo blue green shade (PB15:3) Phthalo green blue shade (PG7) Winsor and Newton Indigo Indanthrone blue (PB60) Quinacridone purple (PV55) and Payne's gray. So yeah mostly highly staturated, transparent and non granulating colours on the cool side X)

The US paint maker DaVinci makes a Violet Iron Oxide, it's on its way to me now. Looking at my DS dotcard, they gave me a tiny amount that didn't rewet; it's not a good swatch. Not sure why because the plain hematite rewets fine. It looks like the DS paint has more black in it, so I bet adding regular DS hematite or lunar black (or any PBK 11 from any brand) might be a close dupe. They also now make a Moonglow dupe called Artemis.

@@iritlandgraf I wanted to report back on DaVinci Violet Iron Oxide. Now that I have it I don't believe it is a dupe for DS Hematite Violet, but I bet if I had some PBK 11 to add (Lunar Black) it would be a close match! To me it looks like the Hematite Violet has two pigments, violet and black, and this is the violet component. Not that this is much help to you in Europe, but maybe someone in the US would be interested to know.

I think it is inferior. Rembrandt's is much better and if you don't mind pans I would get that as it has less binder

Wait I'm confused, you used Rembrandt here instead of Winsor & Newton cobalt violet?? Interesting how it was repelled by the ink from the stamp. Were you using the Hahnemuhle cellulose paper here?

So I purchased hematite purple pigment, and it was really cheap, and it was easy to mull. So I'm not sure why the ds version is so pricy.

@@iritlandgraf joking aside, your videos are great, thank you very much for all you do! 🦋 My sister and I have complete opposite tastes on almost everything. When she is into bright pinks, purples and all sort of pastel colors, I am all about cool colors, blues, greens, and blacks. She calls mine depressing, I call them realistic and hers idealistic 🦄🐺 ahahaha so yeah it’s all subjective! Edit: Oh, by the way, she also lives in Austria, Wien ☺️
