Great video as usual. I'm about to cycle Aquaroche and was wondering how long after the tank is cycled would I need to add livestock. i.e how quickly does bacteria in the reef tank die off without a food source?
@BulkReefSupply

The bacteria does need a carbon (food) source to thrive and proliferate. As soon as you see a nitrate spike in the aquarium, I would recommend starting to add fish within 1-2 weeks thereafter.

Yes, that would be a great plan to get your new tank cycled. I always like to take as much time as possible when transferring animals to a new aquarium and it is best to slowly transition. Adding all your animals at one time can be problematic and create a spike in waste levels in your new tank.

Can I start my refugium right away during the cycle process or should I wait till after? Also should I wait to start the skimmer as well?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 6 жыл бұрын
Usually I will start running the skimmer about 2 weeks into the cycle only to help aerate the water and promote gas exchange. I would not really start growing the refugium until the aquarium has inhabitants which will provide nutrients for the macro-algae in your refugium in the form of waste. If the algae has no nutrients to consume, it may not establish or grow all that well in your refugium. Take care and happy reefkeeping!

Nice video. But i have a question here. If we fully cure live rock for 4 to 8 weeks separately in a large bucket, it means we are making ammonia to zero. This means the water is cycled. So when we put the fully cured live rock into our new aquarium tank, how will it help the water in the tank to cycle?

3-4 weeks at very minimum. You can also monitor the progress with test kits; you will first see ammonia and nitrite spikes then a nitrate spike. After nitrate is present, the aquarium is ready for the addition of animals.

I would still recommend that you cycle your aquarium. Even though the rock may be full of live beneficial bacteria you will experience some die-off inside your tank and it is best to let the entire aquarium stabilize before stocking the tank.

If you are actively taking water out of your tank then you would need to replace it with new saltwater (RO/DI water + salt mix). The only time that you would really be adding freshwater to your tank is to replace water that evaporated away.

At 2:45 the table like rock is simply balanced and wedged in between other rocks on the bottom to support it. I would imagine some epoxy, acrylic rods or some other stabilization would be required if you were to create something like this as a permanent aquascape.

@BulkReefSupply

can using the premixed saltwater help speed up the cycling process?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Gay If using water that has been cycling for some time in a separate container or aquarium, this can certainly help with cycling. It is all based on the bacteria population in the water you are using. If the water is freshly mixed, it will really have no effect on the cycling time.

What if I buy cycled saltwater from my local fish store? Is my tank considered cycled then? Or should I still use a bacterial supplement? I have dry rock and sand.
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 6 жыл бұрын
Most of what happens during a cycle is establishing bacteria on your rocks, in your sand and biological filter media. So water that has been "cycled" will not result in an instant cycle but will help seed the tank with a variety of bacteria strains which can be beneficial to the health of the tank. You still need to properly cycle the aquarium and using a bacteria supplement alongside the seasoned water will be a great approach. Just be sure you trust the source because you do not want to introduce harmful organisms into your tank right off the bat. -Robert @ MD

@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 8 жыл бұрын
+jhon morales We recommend that you start running a skimmer when livestock is added to the aquarium. Bio-media is not necessary since you have live rock but depending on the type of media, you could certainly start running some. Using carbon is a great idea to help keep your water clear and free of contaminates.

Hi, I want to go from 29g to 45g. I'm going to transfer everything: sand, water, rock. Can I change directly, in a day, adding bacteria like one & only or prodibio start-up? It would be like doing a 60% water change?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 5 жыл бұрын
You sure can, just keep the rock and any biological filtration media alive during the transfer. Typically I empty the old tank first and pull out all the animals and corals into buckets with water from the old tank. Then transfer your rock, biological media and get the new tank filtration ready to go. Fill the new tank with new saltwater and also a few gallons of the old water and place the animals into the new tank. Give it a few days to settle and then perform a 25% water change, all the while do daily testing to ensure ammonia and nitrite do not show up in the new system. The old rock and biological filter media should work to ensure this does not happen.

The amounts will differ a bit depending on what brand of bacteria you use, but there should be information in the instructions for dosing in a newly established tank so I would recommend following those. At the office we typically use Microbacter7 which recommends using 5ml for every 25 gallons of water daily for two weeks. After that they recommend dropping down to 5ml per every 50 gallons once a week. mdshop.us/2tes89r

I want to cycle my saltwater tank. I have cured live rocks, substrate in the tank with a protein skimmer with a filter running as well. I throw in fish food for the Ammonia. Is it good enough? But I'm not sure how much of fish food to add inside the tank each time?

My ammonia and nitrites have dropped to 0 but my nitrates are 20+. I don’t have any fish yet. Is this normal?

Yes, nitrates will be the final by-product after your tank has cycled and is ready for fish. Some nutrients needs to be added to the aquarium in some form in order for the bacteria to grow and cycle the aquarium. You are now ready to add fish!

Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies thanks for the response. I just thought 20+ seemed pretty high. I used “cycle” to add bacteria and started with live sand and used some ammonia drops as the food source but I didn’t add all that much ammonia.

I can understand but since the nitrates are present, this means you have a healthy population of bacteria. You can always just give it a few more weeks to be safe. I would recommend a small water change just before introducing new fish to help bring those nitrates down slightly and reduce the chance of a pesky algae bloom.

can i cycle with just live sand

We do suggest adding your sand and rock at the same time. This way you will not have to wait even longer for the tank to cycle. If you add sand first, the tank will go through some level of cycling when live rock is added into the tank.

Im cycling now and I may have messed up. It smells really bad. Im not sure if its the shrimp or the pukani...

The smell is pretty common especially when cycling a tank. It is often a result of nutrients and die-off from your live rock that is breaking down inside the aquarium. A little bag of carbon filter media will help reduce the smell. :) Thanks for watching and commenting! -Robert @ MD

Hi! Thanks for responding. The smell went away after removing the shrimp. It was gross. But my cycle is in full swing!

EDK ReefMeister It happened to me exactly the same. The water got white cloudy with the shrimp and it smelled like hell. I got scary and I changed the water in a 70%. The cleared up in a couple of days and the smell just disappeared..

Nice video. But i have a question here. If we fully cure live rock for 4 to 8 weeks, it means we are making ammonia to zero. This means the water is cycled. So when we put the fully cured live rock into our new aquarium tank, how will it help the water in the tank to cycle?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 6 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching! Curing rock generally is a pre-caution to allow time for any dead organisms to die off and the rock to establish a healthy population of bacteria. If you added a bunch of fresh live rock to your aquarium directly out of the ocean, you will experience a large spike in waste which can result in nuisance algae among other problems. Feel free to elaborate as we are certainly happy to help further! -Robert @ MD

Thanks Robert for the reply. Actually my question was- Will a fully cured live rock help to cycle a new salt water tank? Because there won't be any more ammonia produced from those cured rocks when put in the new tank. As a matter of fact there won't be any more development of beneficial bacteria other than what is present in the rock.
