When it comes to wood fill, for the most part I use either saw dust and wood glue, saw dust and epoxy, wax fill stick, or joint compound for painted projects.

Jon - Helpful video. The time required to mix the sawdust and glue subtracts from the working time of the glue, When using an epoxy that has a long working time, that's not a problem, but with a short working-time epoxy, the glue could start to set up before the sawdust is fully integrated. A trick is to mix the sawdust with the resin component alone, before adding the hardener - the clock doesn't start on the working time until you add the hardener, so that approach allows more time to thoroughly mix the sawdust and resin.

I am getting ready to refinish my hard wood floors. If I use epoxy with sawdust, will it take stain? I have my doubts, because epoxy envelopes the saw dust particles and there will not be no more access to them for the stain. Your thoughts?

Thanks Jon just what i needed as i did my first picture frame using 1/2 lap joints that i messed up a bit because I had everything great on the test cut then i just made one little change and screwed it up :( Anyway i'll be using one of those methods to fill in the gaps as needed. Take care Jon !

Poly vynil acetate (wood glue) + iron (tools, nails, steel wool) react to create iron acetate. Iron acetate is a component of jet black ink or stain.

Thanks for the video. I used sawdust from an orbital sander with wood glue on a big gouge taken by the slip of a router on a white oak piece, but the dried result is much darker. I used a strip of the white oak to mix it, and mixed it on a piece of ply, so no metal anywhere. Any tips to get it lighter again? It was fine when it was wet but dried much darker. Maybe I need to sand some back again and mix it with epoxy and fill a top layer to match instead?

Hiya john thanks for your videos. Can you tell me what is joint compound? In the UK joint compound isn't a product name we use. It more than likely goes by another name but What is it???? Is there a common use in USA for joint compound? Thanks

Mike Seymour it is the joint filler, after taping dry wall, in your home. Very similar to a plaster. Also called “spackle” or “mud” here in the U.S.
