WATCH PART 1: • The Big Bug Eating Ind...
On the second installment of our 'VICE INTL' special on China's edible insect industry, host Joshua Frank ventured into the countryside to get his hands dirty-harvesting worms, collecting cockroaches, and chowing down on what he's always considered gruesome pests. Then, he sat down with the founder of Livin Hive, a startup enabling everyday consumers to set up their own indoor worm farms, to explore the sustainability benefits this unusual delicacy can provide.

I prefer having a westerner doing these things, it’s easier that way for me to relate to the situation he’s in. For example if he/she shows disgust at something I’m easier able to grasp the feeling than someone from the area who treats it as a day to day thing.

@growlingbehemoth In America 🇺🇸 We respect ALL elders because they've lived longer, have been through more and are wiser!! And no I don't just stare at them with silence but I don't say horrible things! I would politely say "I really don't like this much. Maybe it's an acquired taste? I'm sure if I was accustomed to eating it I may like it. I'm just not used to such flavors" or something similar. Because they taste good. You don't have to eat their guts or shells and seafood has a neutral or slightly sweet flavor. Bugs usually taste like nothing at best and like dirt/stomach fluids at worst. There is no pleasant flavor and it's rarely possible to butcher or process them because they are so small. Ask anyone who has tried grasshoppers, the problem isn't that it's sooo scary to eat them, the problem is they suck as food.

he is actually not disrespectful, its his opinion, hes not really judging the people. im in southern africa, we have similar caterpillars that we eat here, i choose not to eat them because IMO eating caterpillars is disgusting, why should i eat worms? so in disagreeing with my people its not disrespect, its an opinion. p.s the worms are called mopane worms, you can google them, they literally have spike all over their bodies and have the following colours; green, white, black and red. LMAO now imagine a foreigner coming here and you expect them not to have a contrary opinion about a worm that when alive if you handle it its spines may prick your finger. not fighting just saying bruh EDIT; the part where the guy was cooking the roaches and some crawled out of the wok was pretty funny LOL

If you are doing a documentary and are welcomed into these poor humble people's homes to try to taste these insects that they work so hard to farm...then DO NOT BE SO DISRESPECTFUL and so arrogant!! This is their livelihood and al, they are doing is trying to create a living for their family so they can all survive and the last thing they all need is for you to enter their home or business and decide to criticise and or put down something of which is part of their culture!! I suggest that a more diplomatic respectful and sympathetic person do this documentary than this guy. Here a heads up...look at the show bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman and you will learn the correct way to behave and act when invited into these people's homes business or culture. This shows concept is great but the presenter was too ignorant and disrespectful to do the show or the people in it any justice. ONE STAR⭐️ and that is all the presenter made it worth !!!

Thanks for making this video! I like your style of presenting info and humor because it makes eating bugs seem like a light and friendly topic. Great introduction of the bug eating culture to non-bug eaters (I didn't like the idea at first but now I want to try too). Also Josh's chinese is very good, hoping to see him in more chinese culture videos.

we used to get bugs similar to those green caterpillar thing...but they were on our tomato plants. they'd rattle when you shook them. we used to step on them and they'd explode green goo.

Just wanted to give my regards to host Joshua Frank, he is humble, likeable and respectful in a situation which clearly is a bit tough at times, haha. Would love to see more from him and China!

Does anyone have the ID for the track played at 2:18? I'm pretty sure Vice used (or made?) it for Action Bronson's Fuck, That's Delicious (Munchies Episode 6) at 19:52.
