The Invincible ‘Super Rats’ Genetically Resistant to Poison

For decades, setting traps and deploying poison did the trick when it came to getting rid of rats. But after years of city life, some of the rodents have begun to genetically mutate, developing a resistance to poison and a gift for outsmarting traps. These “super rats” are on the rise in metropolitan areas the world over- and without a surefire way to catch them, they’re getting smarter, stronger, and larger in number every day.
On this episode of ‘PEST KINGDOM,’ VICE Japan sat down with a handful of experts studying super rats to hear exactly how the rodents got so strong, and find out what-if anything-can be done to get them under control.

"Super rats" are smarter, stronger, and bigger than the normal rodents you see in the subway. VICE Japan met some of the experts investigating this new breed of mutated rat to figure out what, if anything, can be done to control the pests. They are not bad. Humans have simply removed their natural predators from the environment, while giving endless supply of food to them. The problem is not that there are rats, they are in fact an important part of the ecosystem. The problem is imbalance that has caused there to be too many rats in certain areas. Rat poison also kills small predators that eat rats, making the problem worse.

We had a rat infestation. Like hundreds. No need to mention how terrible and terrifying that was. So after trying everything (poison, traps, professional help lol) we decided to give some random rat expert a chance and this guy comes with a square, blue gel like substance and proceeds to toss them all over the house with the warning to not let our dogs into the house. A few days later the rats disappeared. They didn’t die. They just....left. It’s been a year now. Absolutely No rats and I’m still shocked. Anyone knows what that could have been ? I never got to ask the guy because to be honest I’m not convinced sorcery was not involved.

I had roof rats invade my attic in phx AZ, out of nowhere they appeared, what I used to kill them was a barbecue 2 tooth fork on a 4 ft plastic handle and plugged into 120 volts, with a 30 ft plug wire, rats that had gotten away but had been hit with the fork but not stabbed were very aware of its purpose, those where not so lucky, were stuck with the fork and electrocuted and would smoke, this worked the best out of traps and baited poison.

Rats are SUPER awesome pets. They have individual personalities - Very smart. You could tell 2 identical looking rats apart from their unique traits. They can even be trained to do tricks When you see a "mouse" in a movie, it is usually a rat. They have cognitive abilities and can actually be affectionate. A mouse or gerbil is very different.

10:58 - I don't know if this was mistranslated but the effectiveness of warfarin is it's ability to ANTI-coagulate blood (less coagulation -> bleed to death). VKOR doesn't obstruct the cycle, it is actually necessary for the coagulation cycle. So, more VKOR = more coagulation = don't bleed to death. More warfarin = less VKOR = bleed to death. I think the video has this backwards.

We must understand that rats have been put here for OUR BENEFIT and nature's benefit. Rats control garbage accumulation especially in large cities. Like the video states rats are prevalent in large urban centres and can become a nuisance over time. Since all rats belong to an overall ecological system it goes without saying that their presence is NECESSARY. Just like flies and scavengers. The long term view is to dismantle big Metropolitan areas, but this solution also akin to a vast array of other subjects will not happen soon. So...in the meantime big cities everywhere must endure and be on the defensive.

I get that the person who translated the Japanese into subtitles was likely a native Japanese speaker translating into English as their second (or other) language, but I'm surprised VICE was too lazy to check over and correct and clarify the numerous errors that were there. @hattochangemyname tothis I understand those issues that subtitlers have to go through (currently learning Japanese so I understand when a phrase simply doesn't directly/neatly translate) but the mistakes I saw were easily avoidable and weren't simply 'compromise' translations. They were obvious and outright mistakes that I feel shouldn't have been there given the quality I've come to expect from VICE. All it took was a proficient English speaker to glance over the subs to double check them and correct those mistakes. And again, at times the subs were so dodgy that I didn't understand what they were actually meant to say.
