The Big Lebowski (1998)
FIRST TIME WATCHING The Big Lebowski had me in stitches! I was laughing so hard at Jeff Bridges in this movie. John Goodman should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in this movie. It was legendary. The Coen Brothers make the craziest movies and I love them all!

My favorite scene post-first viewing is the Larry Sellers scene. Knowing what you now know about what the "Big" Lebowski did with the money, consider that scene from Larry's perspective, and it is freaking HILARIOUS. Two guys come into your house, wave your homework in your face, demand the money, tell you you're killing your father, then one of them goes outside and proceeds to destroy your neighbor's car.

Sam Elliott told Joel and Ethan basically "Don't get me wrong, I appreciate it, but I don't know why I'm here." And they basically said "Yeah, we're not exactly sure either." I think what it came down to is that they just wanted to work with him, so they just created this narrator character and called him The Stranger. I think his voice adds a gravity to the movie that it doesn't warrant, and that just adds to the surreal comedy.

I like the idea that throughout the movie, the Dude comes in to contact with all sorts of elements that are completely out of his own sphere. Elements that are so bizarre and make absolutely no sense in relation to who he is and what he's all about: millionaires, pornographers, kidnapping, detectives, private investigators, German nihilists, avant-garde artists, Saddam Hussein. It's like, ok, why not just throw a cowboy into the mix too? Oddly, out of all these random characters, the Stranger seems to be the most similar to the Dude himself. Sam Elliot, with that drawling voice, gives off the vibe that he is so confident and self-assured, he may just be the most laidback, relaxed, easy-going guy in the world, next to the Dude. Which makes him perfect to tell the Dude's story. Almost every other character the Dude meets is in some way neurotic. People who are constantly on edge, desperate or needy, barely holding back rage or fear or aggression. From the carpet-pissers, to Walter, all the way to the cab driver who really, *really* loves the Eagles. The Stranger might not understand the Dude, but that doesn't bother him. He's the only guy who matches the Dude's energy; who's cool with just letting the Dude be himself in the end.

@@joshuabeavin7659 "There's just one thing...do ya have to use so many cuss words?" I think that's the only thing about the Dude that the Stranger doesn't admire. But when the Dude responds with "The fuck are you talking about?", the Stranger smiles and says "Ok Dude, have it your way", showing he respects the Dude for not changing for him or anyone else. He may not like that the Dude cusses, but he admires that he's not going to stop just to please him.

I think the movie is about men in a world where women don't need them anymore. The only characters with any real success are Maude and Bunny. The two Jeffrey Lebowski's are both essentially worthless bums, the only real difference between them is that the Dude seems to be more okay with this while the other Lebowski is trying to act like he's not.

There are so many little details. The look of confusion on some people's faces when there are two totally different conversations going on simultaneously between Walter, Donny and the dude is great. @@RobwLPOC there is a fan theory that Donnie may be a figment of Walters imagination, or a representation of walters PSTD. Walter only responds to Donnie, no other character responds directly to Donnie. The dude accepts walter's quirk in occasionally talking to this imaginary "Donnie" persona because the dude realizes walter is trying to cope and the dude is his only social connection, Look how sensitive the Dude is to the landlord and his interpretive dance- he shows up regardless if he cant pay the rent because he knows that dance is important to a good part of the landlord. like walters interaction, socially is a good part regardless if he constantly interrupts himself with "shut up!, donnie!" who may not be there. Donnies death at the end may signify Walters overcoming his shortcomings with the success of the lebowski drama resolution- and getting to the league bowling.
@RobwLPOC
@RobwLPOC 2 жыл бұрын
@@64MartinDiV @mah tay I know that theory. Jeff, John and Steve we're intrigued and liked it. It explained why Walter was so hostile towards him and because the Dude only talks directly to Donnie saying an entire 4 words to him the entire movie "Where you going dude?" "Home Donny " "Phones ringing dude" "Thanks Donny" As well, the dude was standing over him saying he had been shot when there was no blood and Donnie was not holding a wound. He said that because he thought that's what Walter believed until Walter corrected that there was no shots fired and he was having a heart attack As well, someone else pointed out if Walter was actually not a veteran and was being haunted because his claims were stolen valour, or if he had some kind of survivor's guilt because Donnie had died in the war and he didn't, the fact he actually fought a battle and was wounded in battle protecting his friend the dude, that allowed Donny to die and quit haunting Walter who was now at peace. Which gives the whole idea of Walter having survivor's guilt or Stolen Valor even more likely. The dude simply hooked it up with the funeral place to give them some unclaimed ashes so that Walter could say goodbye and do the ash spreading ceremony.
@RobwLPOC
@RobwLPOC 2 жыл бұрын
@@64MartinDiV It was originally part of the story in one of the first drafts for the dude that the way he survived was that he was the heir to the inventor of the Rubix cube. The reason he was able to live but was broke is that the Rubix cube was invented in 1974, so sales were not very good anymore meaning his royalties were only enough to scrape by. The two problems with that part of the story were, 1. Erno Rubik was Hungarian and the name Lebowski is Ukrainian/polish, so the name didn't fit really. 2. Erno Rubix was still alive in 1991 when the film was set and was also still active and working, AND today in 2021 Erno Rubix is still alive at 77 years old. If he was not dead it kinda makes it hard for him to have an heir to his fortune LOL Joel Coen cut that detail out, deciding it was best to keep the audience guessing. Although they never realized at the time the issue with the Hungarian name, they did get told or found out the guy was still alive and active I gotta point out with him still alive, the link to the Rubix cube only made sense if the Uncle etc was sending him an allowance and possibly the reason it was so small was that the uncle didn't understand the exchange rates. Although in 1991 one forint was worth close to even, like 1.30 forint was one us dollar, so somewhat closer to even, now they are like 329 forints to buy 1 us dollar. But Rubix was a math professor at the time so he probably would have been able to figure out the exchange rates

Steve Buscemi dying is almost a running gag with the Coen Brothers--and each time they do it he gets made into smaller and smaller pieces. They shot him in Millers Crossing, ran him through the woodchipper in Fargo, and finally burned him into dust in Lebowski. On another note, T-Bone Burnett is brilliant. If you enjoyed the soundtrack to this, check out O' Brother Where Art Thou--also a Coen Brothers film starring George Clooney (and also has John Goodman and the actor who plays the millionaire Lebowski). It has one of the greatest soundtracks ever made for a film and it was put together by Burnett.

I saw this movie when I was very young. At the time I thought this was about a man trying to get his rug back. Now that I'm older, I still think this movie is about a man trying to get his rug back. It's a simple story full of complicated side characters, the Dude is just living his life and trying to avoid problems. If I could I would also lay down on a rug and listen to music all day long. Bunny Lebowski had all 10 toes, that's why they made sure to do the panning close-up of both her feet. Also, it took me a few viewings before I realized Donnie kept getting strikes every time he got up to bowl, except the very last time, when he accidentally left one pin standing. Clearly this left him shook. But then, I finally noticed that, as he's walking back to the bench, he's rubbing his hand. Initially, I never thought anything of because I just thought he couldn't believe he missed a pin. Then it finally occurred to me, Donnie was actually suffering an early warning symptom of an impending heart attack. His hand had started experiencing numbness, which probably affected his bowling, causing him to leave that last pin standing. **Fun fact: Uli's girlfriend (whose toe was cut off) was played by Ami Mann (lead singer for the 80's group 'Til Tuesday).

I've seen this movie probably 50 times and it never struck me, the relationship between the doctor scene and the CCR song. BTW, the toe sacrifice girl is Aimee Mann, if I remember correctly, a very good musician as well, so Flea and Aimee in that scene.

The Cohen brothers specifically wrote the part of ‘Jesus’ for John Turturro. If he wasn’t available, they probably would have just eliminated that character.

Walter: “That makes me f***ing sick!” As Jesus and his team mate are cleaning the balls, I know he’s not talking about what they are doing but it always makes me chuckle in that context.
