I think a very simple way to appease fans would be to make the first championships happen in Brazil. Bring the LCS teams to South America, roll out the read carpet, make it an enormous event. You get to reduce fears that it will be NA-centric by making the first big event happen in their home turf, it's good for optics if you can fill out a huge stadium (more likely in Brazil than in NA), and the LCS teams get the fun experience of competing somewhere international. It'd at least assuage South American fans' fears and probably could cost less than making an equivalent event in NA, making it a net positive without losing too much.

IWD is being real here. This is heavily LCS-favored (it's either this or LCS dies) and there's many negatives for CBLOL, with decent gameplay improvement potential for CBLOL. So why are we annoyed about it? (Skip to the end for tl;dr) Three big reasons. The biggest failures of this system are failing to account for the extreme passion Brazilians have for their teams, fucking over the role of our Tier 2 yet again, and not implementing stricter import rules. The first one is the most impactful. Every single Brazilian team is hugely beloved by their fans. You could argue this isn't so much the case for some teams, but even INTZ (the one IWD mentioned) was beloved DESPITE going 0-bananas in their results. They changed up the lineup, org staff, etc. and are currently 4-0, literally won every game in the first two weeks (even against LOUD, the team that won the last 4 splits). This generates some INSANE narratives---the 5-time champion rising from the ashes like a phoenix; this 'magic' is largely the reason we love CBLOL so much. Let's be real: gameplay-wise I can agree that CBLOL needed some trimming. I can agree with those lower-ranked teams not having a guaranteed spot in CBLOL, but it'll still fuck over the fans so much, and a lot of people will get angry. Moreso if larger teams are cut out--I can see major outrage occuring if any of the current top teams this split are cut off, and they're some of the weaker orgs in recent history. They should AT LEAST let the 4 demoted teams try and "fight" for their spot in CBLOL. Moreover, some of our teams (VKS with Coach SeeEl and Liberty are the most notorious) have started using their Academy/Tier 2 teams in their CBLOL planning, hoping to snatch long-term results. If Tier 2 becomes exclusively a 'qualifier' for CBLOL this is going to fuck us HARD. Admittedly, if Tier 2 continues to be a year-wide competition as it is, while allowing the Academy lineups of CBLOL teams to participate (even if they won't reap the benefits of the final qualifier), with an added international event with LLA to become the CBLOL qualifier, this won't be so bad. Lastly: import rules. It is as you say, there's some really good mechanical talent in CBLOL. Bvoy was here not too long ago, and he wasn't exactly the best ADC in CBLOL. What happens when someone like Tinowns or Titan suddenly get offered $10k USD or $20k USD to join fucking Shopify Rebellion or whatever other team, to try and cut down LCS team costs? You can argue that "technically Brazil could do this as well" but our currency is worth a FIFTH of the dollar. If we pull shit like this, we're only getting bottom-tier players, while y'all can 5x+ overpay ours. I'm trying to be optimistic about this, but it would have been best if they kept the 10 CBLOL teams and sent four LLA to NA. tl;dr US now has a free import slot to snatch top tier BR talent for cheap, our tier 2 used to reveal promising talent and now it will be potentially fucked over, and most importantly Brazilian fans are highly passionate and won't accept 4 of their teams being demoted to tier 2 so easily, especially if the decision is not gameplay-centric but for business reasons.

@@Momogamer9 you're right, but do realise that LCS has far far more budget + Riot NA favoritism, while CBLOL has had a thousand shortcomings, we didn't even have an arena where people could go watch live matches until a few years ago, and through no real fault of our own (in business terms, viewership only increasing etc) we're losing 40% of our teams? that's insane EDIT: also, when I say "for business reasons" I'm referring to internal CBLOL competition, of course. If INTZ's current performance continues, for instance, and Riot drops them to Tier 2, they'll be practically punishing the top 2/3 team for finally winning after multiple splits being last placed, lol. If they're going to demote teams they better do it because they're underperforming *even for CBLOL's level*.

Personally, as a Euro, the special thing about Brazil is the community they built, the special thing about NA is how good they are at burning it all down. Even though what you said is right, Dom nailed when he said we (Brazilians) don't care that only two teams are good. Not only the memes, but the stories of each team are also very interesting, which often is the case of INTZ. I'm making the correction there when you said only two teams are serious, but that is not true. Only two teams are good. The region is just actually bad and constantly teams make huge investments to build super teams and end up near last place because they don't have good staff or leadership to make that talent work. This is what is happening to Kabum, for example, the most expensive team in Brazil currently. Barely made playoffs last split and might be dead last this time even with korean imports and arguably one of the best players in the league, the support Ceos. Now the current trend is the comeback of retired players, so now those bad teams at least have a lot of visibility, sponsors, and spike CBLOL viewership, even though they're not bound to be finalists. Even then we know that CBLOL also doesn't have a very financially viable ecosystem. We just have crazy viewership, and as Dom said, I have no idea how Riot expects to exploit this for LCS. Our interest in the game are totally different.

Sure, but it’s important to consider the kind of audience that esports has. We could use LoL specifically as an example. These individuals will typically be resourceful enough where they can easily navigate to an illegal stream to bypass the imposed price for an event. We can’t quite say the same for an average football (soccer) or NFL fan. Much larger older fan base means less tech savvy and also expected to earn more than younger counterparts. Therefore, they won’t care to pay for the event. I’m not saying it’s right but imo introducing a price to pay for these events in LoL will create some degree of hostility with viewer base and it might not even result in meaningful revenue if people just rip the stream.

On the other side, we have teams like Liberty, that are not trying to win at all but are investing heavily on coaching staff, analysts and trying to prepare young players to compete. The only 100% "shit" teams right now are Kabum (tried a super team, failed), Furia (tried a regular ass team, still failed) and Red Canids (just a big mess), but even then they remain important for the fans and the tournament.

This is very good understanding of the CBLOL and brazilian fanbse. You could explain really well what we're feeling with this announcement. Thank you for showing and for explaining to NA audience our thoughts. I would like to add some points to what you said in the video: -As well as we have chance of becomming more competitive by interacting more with international teams, we're scared of losing our best player with the new classification for imports(the america players). With this teams are allowed to bring another import from the region and that won't use the 2 import slots(used mostly for KR and EU imports), opening for possibility of bringing good player from CBLOL and LLA. We're a bit starved of good player, losing 2 or 3 top player to NA will cause huge impacts on the quality of our league. And since our currency is 5 times weaker than US, we have no way to compete with NA teams for this players. - The cut on number of teams. I agree that currently some of our worst teams matches are unwatchable but that doesn't mean that it was always this way, this is a way deeper hole to go. You mentioned INTZ(reads as I-N-T-Z, as it is a compression/acronym of INTREPIDOS), they were the worst team on the last split, with a mid laner that was the last place in our academy, but did you know that they are the biggest winner on our league with 5 titles? Furia, another one mentioned, they show almost no good results on the championship, but the their org is very influential on another esports and they are part of the VCT Americas franchising which. Fluxo, another who had a bad performance last spli, is the first place this split. Liberty, best talent developer on the league, with a robust coaching staff and structure. We also will lose a lot of history, we have a lot of multiple time winner teams that might not be on the conference anymore and their fanbase that will most definitelly stop watching. I'm not argumenting agains what you said in the video, just adding to everything you said as I agree with most of what you said. Hi Dom! Brazilian fan here. The main perception of the merge here is: LCS is gaining a lot with this merge, and let's be honest, this merge would not happen if CBLOL was struggling with audience and numbers. The merge was only proposef because LCS is suffering, so this change is not being done thinking of brazilian fans and/or on our scenario. Thus, the main argument behind the merge, for us, is that we would benefit from the higher quality players on LCS. That is true, but let's not mistake LCS level of play with LEC, or even LCK or LPL level of play. If the merge was with one of these servers, we would indeed be benefited from the learning and quality improvement throughout the years. But we do not think LCS can do this for us. So, in the way we see it, the merge will make us lose teams that have solid fanbases, will make many people unemployed and will also crush dreams of many young brazilian talents with the pathetic excuse of "you guys will benefit also" the main perception around this topic here, is that it is really unfair and a completely desperate measure to save the LCS, which we couldn't care less.

@whiteflame24 Ай бұрын
Riot should have just made all of the regions the tier 1 leagues but created a master tier league for the teams that win their region in spring, they get put into the "Summoners tournament" or whatever which is just the top 2 teams from each major region doing a full split with each other in the same location. Then to keep your spot in the "master tier" you have to play a best of 5 vs the team who won the region you came from last. It really was never that hard to make interesting international competition even in the riot "splits" format rather than international tournaments but the people who run Riot E-sports specifically are just actually dumb.

A few things I did not understand where: 1. I was under the impression there were three international events already: MSI, Worlds and All-Stars. All-Stars being a more casual tournament. Is All-Stars dead or just a side attraction for worlds now? 2. What is happening to the Russian league? M5 dominated the European league, dipped for their own league and got minor regioned for the last half decade. All other leagues are getting at least a small footnote before being unceremoniously ended. 3. Personally love fearless. Not having a good top-laner destroy everything on the same champion a full series (K'sante last year was a thing and Skarner looks finely balanced as well right now). In the play-offs having Azir, Corki and Orianna at least swapping sides every game sounds nice as well.

I don't think the majority of the player base would pay for a subscription to watch JUST lol eSports. Maybe if they'd partner with other streaming services kinda like Star+ does here in Latin America for example with all the soccer leagues then maybe people will pay for it, but this means having to share the paycheck with other platforms therefore resulting in less profit than releasing an exclusive platform... This way the younger audience would get access too via their parents/family account. I'm just saying this could be a good way to get a new influx of money to the eSports scene and maybe this way other eSports would start doing the same therefore ending in an streaming platform with a subscription method just for eSports 👍🏼

Great video. I appreciate content like this! Gotta say, slight disagree on the “gamers are cheap” idea. I know what you mean but the optics of that statement looks a bit odd saying that on the heels of a $430 skin being released. Whether gamers are truly “cheap” or not is somewhat subjective but for me that’s not the issue. At this point, no esports viewer will tolerate paying for a given esports tournament because a culture/standard has formed where they expect it to be without cost. An introduced price would be received as “they’re ripping us off” or something similar. Had esport events always carried some price tag such as the example you brought up, UFC/MMA, then everyone would understand that is the norm for these events to function. Nevermind the fact a majority would just view it on crackedstreams like people do for fights anyway.

According to MarkZ on the dive there is essentially 0 North/South interaction planned, at least in 2025. Its just going to be a few top teams playing in whats essentially a local qualifier for Internationals. This doesnt seem to have anything to do with "saving LCS viewership" and entirely seems like cutting the headcount for Tier 1 teams that Riot needs to payout to. I get it sucks for CBLOL fans to lose 4 teams (technically only 3 teams) but they are getting a much better deal here than every other minor region, look at whats happening to APAC

@IWDominate I believe there is a point that you Americans are not considering: the loss of regional talent that is likely to happen in CBLOL. Within the new rules, there is a new status for competitors, the 'American'. This status will be an intermediary between imported and regional players, allowing them to move between the regions that make up their league. In practice, this means that Brazilian players, who are very skilled mechanically, can be acquired by any American team for a third of the salaries typically paid in the region, even in tier 2 leagues. Considering that Brazil has a player base perhaps even larger than that of the USA, it is unlikely that the best Brazilian players will continue playing in CBLOL. I believe this is something worth considering.

As a brazilian myself i think i can point out what the issue is. There is a lot of points but i will try to sumirise it up(sorry for bad english). 1. Cblol was triving in their own. So losing 4 teams dont make any sense for any brazilian, because for us every team matters. This fells like it happens because lcs needs money, so you have to cut cost here to make up revenue to keep lcs teans going, insted of just not cutting in cblol and doind it in lcs because it has a smaller comunity. 2.We think in the long run it will happen the same thing as valorant. NA teams have more money so they will get every good player that are good in brazil, not only you are guetting our chance of improving, you get our famous players and break the ability of us seeing our own praised players. Because we cant go to NA just to watch league. 3. We are not guetting nothing for this. "Why?" The thing is this 3 tornament its uselless for us. Because for at least 2 years its not realistic that we would win against NA in a bo5. We are losing our academy and 4 teams and we have to play againt a LLA team to have a place in MSI or worlds so in reality we are just lossing. The only "good" is the possibilty of having 2 teams in worlds but as i said it something that will not happen at least for now. 4. This is for me personaly but its not for brazil but the two tornaments, its stupid to have just one "invited" team, imagine wining the league and having the possibility of not playing the next, it should be at least two. 5. Why the fuck stick to this franchise, it dosent give any stability because as we are seeing riot can just fuck everything you build in secconds. Just let it be competitive.

Hey man, brazilian fan here. I know that watching INTZ is almost impossible, it's painful. however, it is an organization that practically founded the scene, with many fans who wear the shirt and are scared to death of no longer being able to express their support. I'm a paiN fan, we were INTZ's great rival for many years and even we are sad about this possibility. It’s because of history and respect. FURIA, which was a great frustration last split, probably remains in the league because they are already partners in Valorant. There is so much history, so many jobs (and I'm not talking about proplayers) that will cease to exist overnight. We are not rich, our tier 2 will be, for the most part, with only 3 or 4 teams actually competing. CBLOL is not just LOUD, paiN. I understand that the market needs to be cheaper. But please, for the last time, STOP telling us (you are not doing that, it is USA in general) what we should be feeling. It is just sad. Love from Brazil dude. Be safe.

The reality is that CBLOL will be swallowed by the LCS, we will lose teams that, even if they don't perform well, have a history on the scene with more than 5 titles and the average number of views for all teams in CBLOL is very similar, even the last placed team. If you take LOUD, which won 4x in a row when it started, it started coming in last 2x before strengthening itself in the scene, so if this were 4 years ago, it would exclude what is now the largest organization in Brazil, in the same way INTZ, which came in last several times. years in a row, but in the past it has already won 5 times, CBLOL is this year giving opportunities to young people and in this current split it is undefeated in 4 games. The LCS will swallow the CBLOL financially as the American teams will hire the few good Brazilian players to take part of the fan base and thus further harming the Brazilian scene where there will be no money to structure the teams to compete with the LCS. Brazil doesn't want to improve the level of the region, no one asked for it and it won't be 2 more games with LCS that will do that, in the end it's just an excuse to swallow us and steal little from our players with fan base to save the LCS league that only think about results (what was it that sank the league initially)

Will explain it to you briefly why it doesn't help CBLOL whatsoever. They know they're bad and they watch the league regardless, creating narratives, memes, loving some players and shitting on others, it's a full fledged out community that enjoys the way they do things for a decade now. Then comes a dying region, with 0 results 0 trophies, several humiliating losses and entitled as "major region" wanting their fans, viewership and yeah, killing 40% of their teams that, again, they love. I can't at all comprehend how someone would ever be on the receiving end of these news and be ever happy or hopeful for the future. As an EU fan, if LCS came crawling begging for viewership, I'd rather close down LEC than let NA leech off of our viewers cause they don't have any on the home turf, it's pathetic and shows how biased Riot is just cause it's America we're talking about. This is not fair whatsoever, the only ones benefiting from this crap is LCS, LLA will lose 80% of their league and Cblol will lose 40%, all of that so a shitty "major" region can live on? Nah, that's bad by the definition of the word.

But my issue with this argument is that i can barely remember any sponsorships for lec, lcs or other big leagues i was even remotely interested to purchase a product oft. I don't need a car. I don't need anything from the "statefarm analyst desk" i don't need a 2k$ pc on a regular basis. But somehow smaller communities, like the LFN community, or the RLS community is willung to pay for things and to purchase products that might have value for them. Imho there is a gigantic failure by Publishers, TO's and teams to actually make sponsors appear interesting to the audience.

INTZ was the worst team by far last split. They won like 3 from 18 matches. We are in the third week of the second split. INTZ is 4 - 0 and won against the team that is 4 consecutive times champion. Fluxo was 9th place last split and today share the first place with INTZ and KEYD (all 4-0). So we do have dead horses of the split. But in the next split the team might change and become a good team.

This is bonkers, you have 2 divisions for LCS, LLA and CBLOL, but just one for LJL, LMS, SEA and Oceania? They couldn't make a "North" with LMS and LJL and "south" with Vietnam, SEA and Oceania? What? I mean, it beats what the TCL got but...

Imagine the viewership drop from NA viewers and the Brazillian memes if brazillian teams start slaping around NA teams and take some of their worlds spots 😂 Can't wait 🙌🏼
