The BIGGEST MISTAKE Artists Make When Blending Colored Pencils

This is the most common mistake I see when teaching beginner artists how to blend colored pencils together for smooth gradients.
In most of my videos, I talk about the importance of color choices, layering, and keeping a sharp point- but I didn’t realize so many people were missing this very important step!!
OVERLAP YOUR COLORS.
The difference in the video is subtle, because I’m using Prismacolor Premier pencils and they tend to be more forgiving with bad techniques. But using the proper overlapping and layering technique will allow you to create much smoother blends, no matter what pencils you are using.
Check out my other videos for more tips on blending colored pencils, and please subscribe if you found this helpful!

Absolutely amazing Ms. Clark. I can't use color pencils anymore because the harder pressure hurts my hand, but I'm happy for anyone that can use this technique to the fullest. 😊
@haidersart429
@haidersart429 2 жыл бұрын
If you can't apply pressure, try using solvent with your coloured pencils, as this would require a little amount of pressure. I would recommend using textured paper for this technique to work, as it has enough tooth to build io layers and handle the coloured pencils. However, if you don not have solvents available, you can also use baby oil and this works exactly the same. But, I would encourage you not to use this did pieces of art that you are going to sell, as this can leave you with unhappy client who wang their money back after a couple of months or a couple of years.

@@haidersart429 I tried solvents and it just doesn't work for me. I prefer alcohol markers, but I'm happy for those that do use colored pencils. 😊

What exactly doesn’t work when you use a solvent, out of interest? The best solvent for colouring pencils is zest it - that most certainly works. I’m disabled & unable to put a lot of pressure on colouring pencils, but there’s really no need to, it only needs a light touch. If you’re gripping thick alcohol markers, i’m a bit confused as to how you’d find gripping pencils difficult, unless you’re using a lot of pressure? It just needs a light touch, & you build up that may & use a little zest it on a cardboard blender. No biggie if you prefer alcohol markers, I just didn’t want others put off from trying pencils by reading that solvents don’t work & that a hard pressure is needed when using pencils as it isn’t. Happy colouring though (:

I can't use colour pencil because i have difficulty holding the pencil when colouring. I'm not left handed but I use my left hand to write for some reason. So when it comes to colouring I had to use either right or left. But I can't seem to hold it nicely on both hand, which I had to swap hands. I prefer digital colouring better because I can't use traditional colouring pencils.

@@LauraBidingCitizen Maybe colour marker are much more comfortable to use because of it thick body? Idk in my opinion, I like marker much more because of it thick body instead of a thin colour pencils which hurt my wrist and thumb when I use it.

The burnishing is really just part of the last layer. If you’re doing a few layers like this, you can just add more pressure on the top layers. If you don’t want to add more color, you could use a blending or burnishing pencil at the end.

Cross hatching also works because you can start out with a hard barrier between the two colors but as you add more hatching you can add more of the color you need in a particular spot without having to worry too much about the amount of pressure applied, and it can add a bit of texture to your gradients if you want something that isnt as flat or smooth

as much as I understand the sentiment, because A) art is a luxury thing, B) Art is subjective and C) not wanting to discourage begginner artists, and wanting to make them feel welcome and comforted in their journey. D) stuff that may work (or not) in a style could actually do the opposite in another's yaddeayaddaoh BUT This new wave of people getting extra shady and entitled with artists sharing FREE tutorials just because of how they phrase things because " gasp You PuT The Way I appROACH arT in THE "red CROSS wRONG" SECTION???? WELL ERM ACKTUALLY I DRAW LIKE THIS AND HOW DARE THEE speeak in a MAtTER OF fACTLY WAY WhaT I f I took It AT faCE value HUH ?" I really hope burns and d(y)es and gets burried and forgotten forever because toxic posivity. Is still toxic and that's how you breed entitled children who send d-(y)-e threats to artists for not phrasing their tutorial enough like a sweet "m-mayhaps you should consider, my liege" suggestion.
