I don't eat sugar anymore, I noticed that it negatively affects my mental health, and I was a true addict. I don't even eat occasional cookies or cake. If I truly want a sweet, I have an apple or other fruit - but I even limit those. When I stopped eating it, I felt like I came out of a drunken haze. It was amazing the changes I have made in my life. Thank you for sharing this wonderful information!

Marisa your techniques & self-talk strategies have been a key part of helping me lose over 78lbs so far this year & combat a lifetime of obesity. I feel very grateful to you! The fat is practically melting off. When there’s a counter-productive thought I talk back to it! Sugar is definitely my comfort food. I associate it with my grandmother. We would go out for a walk in the countryside and then come home, sit by the fire and eat cake. @@caroh2809 I came to the same realization as you that I was using it as a soothing comfort mechanism and associated it with my mother & grandmother. All Carbs are sugar...eventually. This is such a fundamental statement but many people miss the point. ' Healthy wholegrains' make sugar as soon as it hits the saliva in your mouth. As Marissa states, eat eggs or bacon, have Himalayan or Dead Sea salt on them too....satiety is a Godsend . Thanks Marissa xxx
@yourguyjay
@yourguyjay 4 жыл бұрын
Moira Goldsmith we need carbohydrates. Our brain runs on glucose. We used to live in trees and eat mostly fruit (and we still have a frugivorous digestive system). Then at some point we started eating grains, grains fuelled the greatest empires we have known. Saying “make sugar as soon as it hits the saliva” is bad science. Whole foods contain fibre, fibre meters the conversion of carbs into glucose. It’s a more complicated process and demonising carbohydrates is nonsensical. Further, advocating bacon for breakfast sounds like pushing another agenda, swapping one unhealthy habit for another. Not to mention the ecological impact that would have if that’s what people aspire to.

@@yourguyjay you sound like you are also talking about the Keto diet. It wants you to limit your carbs to a small amount. What are your thoughts on Keto?🤔
@yourguyjay
@yourguyjay 4 жыл бұрын
All diets basically work for about 1/3 of the people that try them. Personally i aim for the most sustainable (for my body and my environment), widely applicable and ethical I can, that is in line with my beliefs. Ketosis can be brought about by avoiding carbs or by avoiding food in general. Fasting is incredibly healing. Our bodies are incredible and will get sustenance where it can, I would say a low GI lifestyle is certainly very healthy for the vast majority, if not all people - done in accordance to their individual bodily needs.

This is kind of a western perspective though. Like for example in India, the traditional mushy stuff for babies is not sweet. It is neutral or savory. I remember my mom feeding my baby brother a mushy paste of rice, boiled lentils and a generous amount of ghee. Until I moved to the US I hated sweets. I probably ate them couple of times a year or during weddings or birthday parties. But now I am addicted to it and have to go through a lot to restrain myself from eating them. It is very complicated but the only way I know is make single serving sweets with healthier sugars like dates or palm sugar which tend to have extra fiber and minerals but most important make one serving, eat it and be done. Even better would be to go back to my younger years where I just did not care for sweets... somehow

it doesn't "work", but people definitely do it! desserts and wine and other drugs and alcohol, it's called self-medicating, lol - that's the wrong way, but it absolutely makes me feel better, and that's why i go to sugar/desserts = instant gratification... when I'm stressed or sad, it not only makes me feel better, it takes my mind off of my situation... *usually. I'd love to no long "need" or want sugar/desserts... but until I start getting what I want in life, it'll keep being my relief method

Nearly once everyday, my attention pings on the connection between self-soothing, sugar consumption, and reverting to childhood acts. Admittedly, I sometimes munch like a child. I’ll eat and eat and eat sugar for usually about a week. Then, one day, I’ll stop, but I have to first use imagery and prayer to get me there. It comes and goes in waves. One way I’ve learned to address this problem is by, every so often, luxuriating in the memory of being a child. I’ll get out my sweet tooth, and make sure I pick something truly special. It was like it was just yesterday when a few vanilla cupcakes would do the trick. These days, an expensive slice of carrot cake is on the menu. In other words, I still make it meaningful. Like anyone else, I am working on finding a balance. To add to everything I’ve already said, sometimes memories my days of yore as a teenager lead me to binge on potato chips. So I’ve just accepted that there will always be a part of me that wants to use food to feel better, especially by going back in time. I try to be mature these days and do best I can to measure the amount, unlike my younger self. I also try to make sure my bites are as savory and as perfect as possible, rather than mumble constant apologies as I stuff myself. I’ve also learned to watch myself. If it’s my period, all bets are off, and so in this scenario I’ve learned to keep what I’ve deemed “half-treats” on hand.Typically, that means a decadent assortment of yogurts (i.e. peach, mango, coconut, vanilla, and key-lime). I also leave out on the counter some of the darkest, ideally lavender-infused, chocolate I can find. It’s not easy cutting out sugars, and so I’ve never been able to push myself, like some people do, into consuming none at all. Maybe one day though, it will be all olives and sardines. That all said, halting my consumption of sugar in the morning has continued to be a workable idea, no matter where I am in my cycle or what special treat I have planned. Although I still crave orange juice, I also now know that this craving comes from childhood, when I was not allowed the cool, ready-made, pulp-free kind my friends all had. It was always fresh orange juice only when I was sick. To combat this, I’ve turned to making low-carb, gluten-free, high protein, orange poundcake. With all of that said, eating healthier has turned me into a regular chef!

Strange. I heard the opposite, a nutritionist told me that when you it salt that your body will crave sugar. So she recommended to cook a lot at home so that I don’t consume to much sodium. I am confused.

Hi Marisa, I'm a HUGE fan & take all your suggestions very seriously. However I love to bake and have been trying sugar-free recipes using only stevia and/or dates. Do you think that is okay?

It's interesting how I don't need sweet food at home or on vacation, only when I'm at work. I had Candida problems in my intestine. I had to have a strict diet without sugar. That was 12 years ago. I've discovered that I really can't tolerate surten type of people. In this time I was able to develop "that's enough of sugar" (so when I was fed up with sugar I stopped eating it completely for longer period of time) and also "that's enough of these people." Right now I'm on a sick leave because I can't stand the negativity in my company and sugar doesn't help me anymore. So negative pushy people make me eat sugar. (I'm about to study for two exams ➡️ new job opportunities ➡️ life without these nasty people) People, always have a plan B! This is very important coping mechanism.

Please help me : I am addicted to sugar, I do not eat sugary products nor drink tea nor coffee (no sugar) nor do I eat processed foods, but I like a drink of Chablis at night with dinner and as soon as I have my glass of wine, I want not more wine but the sugar from the wine and want to eat chocolates (and force myself not to eat them - I stopped buying chocolates) How can I enjoy my Chablis without craving sugar? Have bought several of your courses because they work. 🌹Best wishes & Thank You.

Hi Marisa, I watch all your videos regularly and I love watching your videos as they are truly inspiring and life motivating. i am between 35 and 40 and I am looking for a job. I am from India and I had enrolled myself in level 8 program for Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology but unfortunately I have failed the course. This year in 2019 I returned to India from Auckland New Zealand. I do get constantly negative thoughts in my mind whether I would be successful in my career or not. I would be very grateful if you guide me. I intend to work in the field of IT networking as it interests me a lot.

What's a 'celebrity' therapist? 'Celebrities'...are created by people who have no self worth left...and so by definition they are worshipped and made by damaged people. She should know this...and also know that to be elevated to 'celebrity' status by damaged people...or self selected to 'celebrity' is very damaging to both her...and...by definition...anyone she attempts to heal. ' Celebrities' cannot heal...or be healed...as they are damaged people....and need healing themselves. Fact.

Any tips for vegans wanting to quit sugar? I don't usually get cravings until the evenings. But not eating any animals or their products makes it tougher. All the recommendations you made were animal products.

Look up Dr Berg's channel. There's some great tips on there for going sugar free. Research the healthy ketogenic lifestyle that provides all the nutritional needs you have- Dr Berg recommends lots of healthy veggies and salads. Make sure you are getting the nutrition you need from your food so your body feels satisfied. If you're vegan make sure you get your B12 from nutritional yeast. There are plenty of alternative sweeteners like stevia that will help satisfy your cravings without spiking your insulin or resulting in a crash. There's a vegan keto lady on KZfaq called Heavenly Fan and she has some amazing vegan friendly dessert recipes that you might love. All the best

Might be an adrenal thing if you crave salt. The Himalaya pink salt has a lot of nutrients as does sea salt, that you cannot get from regular table salt. I was addicted to so much salt for years but switching to the pink salt helped me out of the addiction and into a preference for less salt. The body needs some salt to function properly but deeds zero added sugar.. Good luck..

What about having coffee with milk and stevia instead of sugar with breakfast? Does it still have the same effect with the Stevia?
@proinseasnihanluain4735

Stevia is kinder than sugar but, if you eat a lot of alternative sweeteners you can end up craving more. It depends how sensitive your body is. Watch out for maltitol- it's billed as diabetic friendly/ sugar free but it will spike insulin levels more than table sugar.
