I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this childhood film after viewing it again recently. I think a large part of that is Barry's fantastic score but it can also be said that the effects, surreal ending (in the Director's Cut) and general mood works well to build the mystery.
A film filled with great examples of science fiction doors and corridors; all used to great effect to build and maintain the mystery and the action.
As before, only footage and audio from the film itself is used to make this fan short and no copyright infringement is intended.

I will always remember that part of the movie where Holland explores the abandoned crew apartments. No robots, lasers, explosions or even words, but it sticks in my mind. It conveys a vastness and loneliness that was just spot on.

I think the Cygnus was designed to be open and airy and not claustrophobic--necessary traits for a deep space vessel with a large crew and long, long voyages. That's a lot of time spent on board so the living and working spaces would have to be, in a word, magnificent. It's one of the more believable space vessels IMO. As for the central vein down the center of the hull, it looks like it was a modular design for maximum cargo capacity or more living quarters.

The whole movie has a very "FP" feel, with Reinhardt as Dr. Morbius. When he asks McCrae to "protect" him from Maximilian, you have to wonder. Did Reinhardt build Maximilian, and the drive system that keeps the Cygnus from being yanked into the hole- or did he FIND them? And if the latter, WHO originally built both? And who is really running the show? Reinhardt- or Maximilian? You can talk about themes that might be in certain SF films, but like Forbidden Planet, in The Black Hole they're actually there, in plain sight. Possibly the most philosophical, and certainly the darkest, movie Disney has ever made. And I'm not referring to the stage lighting.

This film was a visual triumph in 1979. Although, belief must be suspended to accept the look of the Black Hole as well as any hope of physically surviving even the event horizon. Acting was only barely acceptable with the storyline having some serious flaws. But, the 'look' of the film is almost enough to forgive any shortcomings. And it still looks amazing!

Hey man, calm yourself. It's *science fiction* but the movie establishes that Reinhardt developed a mechanism or a technology for antigravity--that's why the ship has been sitting there, motionless, for years while he gathered data on the black hole. @@Gavrev I wouldn't say Reinhardt had a voice at all in the ship's design, but It's safe to say he took over the parts of the ship that he wanted (officer's wardroom for example) after he lobotomized the crew and then the ship thereafter reflected the exacting standards that his egotistical, tyrannical command dictated. I think the story was that the robots were original to the ship, intended for defense and general ship's security. Reinhardt re-programmed them to round up the human crew and have them lobotomized to remove their free will. A prequel to this ship would be fantastic in order to show how the ship operated in the time before the Black Hole was discovered.

Guess the writers didn’t come up with one back that, probably was heavily influenced with religious background or dogma.

One theory that has been submitted in recent years is that the end scenes (Heaven, Hell, etc) were the result of mental visions pouring out of Dr. McCrae's heightened-ESP mind on overdrive. The visions were created during the traverse through the black hole. The ending seems to take its cues from the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
