Palenque Colombia. In this video, I visit Palenque Colombia, my Colombian Friend's family's home town to learn about Life there. Formed in 1603 by runaway slaves, San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia was the first documented free slave town in the Americas.
In 2005 UNESCO declared Palenque a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity because there were able to maintain its African culture. Today Palenque is a Major tourist destination for people who want to learn more about this town and the diaspora.

What they also left out in colombian history is that Simon bolivar inconjuntion with" Alexandre Petion" (Haiti) was responsible for the the liberation of gran Colombia (colombia venezuela ecuador ) . After his first defeat simon bolivar summoned the Haitian General to defeat Spain in Gran colombia which which explains why Haiti colombia venezuela ecuador all have a similar flag. There's also a statue of Alexandre Petion in Cali, Colombia showing appreciation for what he did.

What the brother was actually referring to when talking about history was surprisingly accurate and I love it! What he was referring to was that the slavers who commuted between the Americas and Africa were predominantly Portuguese. There's a commonly held misconception in the United States that they were mostly American or British but that's because the British and Americans were largely buyers and not direct slavers. What would happen would be that mainly the Portuguese would raid and strategically gather people from the coasts of Africa and sell them in Brazil or on islands like Sao Tome, Cape Verde, Jamaica, Cuba, Caribbean etc etc etc to whatever people (French, Spanish, Dutch, English, etc etc) dominated those colonies. Then from those colonies what would usually happen is there would be buyers from the states and other colonies who would transport those people to the mainland Americas hence why slavery mainly as an economy existed in the South of the US and in South America. When it comes to languages? The bantu languages he was referring to were bantu languages. It's because most of the people that were removed from Africa that were taken to South America were from what are now Bantu speaking countries. These include the republic of Congo, Angola, Kenya and Mozambique. Kikongo is a good medium because its one of the most easily intelligible Bantu languages amongst those that were involved during the era of colonisation. It shares alot with both south east bantu languages like xitsonga and kiswahili and south west bantu languages like kimbundu and oshiwambo so it makes sense that the folks that landed in Colombia would use it as a basis for communication. That was a cool thing to learn for me especially because I speak Kimbundu/Umbundu which isn't far from Kikongo so Palenque doesn't sound super distant at all 😲

Wow!!! You are being blessed for making this video!! I am currently visiting in Peru. I spent a month in Medellin Colombia. I was treated so badly as a black woman that I didn’t want to go to any other cities in Colombia. Peru isn’t much better. I appreciate the awareness being brought to places like in this video where black people dwell. I feel if blacks travel to Colombia they should visit places like this city and put money into their economy. Please continue to do these videos and let us know how we can help with money, supplies, etc.

Ace I don’t know if you will ever read this but please know this is healing to my soul on soo many levels. After being judged all because the color of your skin and never being taught just how magnificent of a creation you are growing up to knowing deep within in you a still small voice tells you that you do matter. Listening to that still small voice only wakes up the pain and desire to know just who you are and that when someone truly look at you…you matter because they know you are the secrect to soo many unanswered questions. We are a resilient people. Look at all we endured. Like soo many others…but to acknowledge the beauty of our ancestors through us is worth more than any treasure this life has to offer. This feeling and joy that I have just knowing that my ancestors roam these lands and left behind their legacy is more than all the riches in this world could ever buy. I rather have true freedom than smoking mirrors that this life fraudulently offers. This is living…This is freedom… God Bless You for taking the world on this journey with you. I am forever grateful more than you will ever know. This brings tears of joy to my soul. Continue to do what your doing because we need to see through your eyes and many others eyes the truth. I can honestly say… And now I see. God Bless You. What a humbling experience.

Great Video Ace!!! I remember when I first arrive in the USA that people, both black and white, kept telling me I was not black because I was Latino-Colombian, they were surprised to hear that my family was of African descent and we had a great population of black people in Colombia. I remember trying to prove my blackness, LOL. The good part is that those interactions lead to conversations that lead to understanding and appreciation of our roots and that the USA is not the only country in the Americas with black people that had to fight for freedom, and that the term African-American encompasses ALL people of African descendant in the American continent.

No, that’s incorrect. The term African American refers to the descendants of slaves in the US. We are our own ethnicity.

It's beautiful how certain of the slave trade the people of Palenque are. Though here in America some dont even care to want to acknowledge it. The brainwashing of America is so profound that we here with access to some of the best necessities of life dont respect the hardship our ancestors went through. The internet is the connection for us all. We are all over the world. Thankyou for this video brother. I have learned so much about the diaspora of black people from South American and Caribbean countries. We(in the US) were forbidden by law to read or even keep names that would let us know our origins. But places like Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, etc hold glorious lessons of our diaspora. Loved this. Ace if you ever have time watch "La Esclava Blanco" on Netflix.
