I almost wish I didn't publish this book, because if I didn't, I would be completely losing my mind over this.

Can definitely vouch for that. I only discovered it two weeks ago and completely lost my mind over it. So much amazing work!

Patron is a good word for Bray. But he was so human in his interactions with these guys, especially the old masters whose lives he touched. There was nothing mercenary about publishing Szukalski; it was really an act of love. I don't think fans even knew Wolverton was still alive, if they remembered him at all, when Bray published the first Wolverton collection (and got Rick Griffin to draw the logo). And he was the guy who first coaxed Carl Barks into doing those wonderful oil paintings of his ducks. This is such a valuable, life-changing book. I bet he has enough for a second volume.

This is a great book! Would love to see Bray's collection in person.

That Russ Heath "Plastic Sam" page fucked me up more than maybe any comic page of my youth. It was reproduced in a MAD special in the '70s. I felt that.

Bedrock City (Flintstones Land) was bought up last year and is being turned into a raptor park. I've shot model shoots there a few times over the last few years, one of my favorite insane weird creepy places.

Jason Hamlin is the custodian of cool. I've bought/traded for a lot of fine comix from his massive stock.

I used the advice about drawing the head last at the 36:19 mark and I like it a lot! Thank you for making note of that and continuing to produce excitement for making comic books. Best of health for you and yours.

There's a beautiful collection (almost) all of Peter Pontiac's comics work called Rhythm, published a few years ago by Oog & Blik. It's in Dutch but it's well worth checking out for the art alone. that was all stuff that appeared in random Dutch underground comix and the like. Podium published (in Dutch) his other two big comic works: Kraut, about his dad who collaborated with the Germans in WOII and Styx, about death which sadly he never managed to finish due to his health. His art is amazing and it's cool to see so much of it show up in this book.

Since the day I bought this book when Glenn Bray came to Portugal this was right away my favourite book, and I believe it will appear another book that can surpass this one for me!

I'd add Alvin Buenaventura to the custodian list. I don't know that much about Alvin, but I believe he came from little means, and would save all his money for SDCC. Later, I believe he and Clowes would talk about what art was for sale in auctions like Heritage.

Glad you guys didn't skip over the Robert Williams section and you've said the same thing I say. There's something about his comics that no one has been able to touch.

Awesome presentation of amazing book. I enjoy all of the pearls of wisdom that you gentlemen drop while leafing through the book. Any Kayfabers looking for the book should check out their local Half Price Books when they open. I picked up my copy in the Art section (vs. Graphic Novels) about a year ago. Mint, sealed and deeply discounted. Finally, it seems like most of the artists you talked about have a nice book out from Fantagraphics (with the exception of Rick Griffin).

pg 64 Hans Bellmar German Surrealist artist from the 1920s, did a lot of weird doll sculptures but his (semi-erotic?) drawings are amazing. Ed, you might the like winding and spoopy drawings.

Bellmer dolls show up in a lot of Japanese alternative art magazines for some reason, like Talking Heads and Yaso Filles. Also mentioned a few times in that Manga Masters of the Art book that the boys have mentioned. I have no idea why, except it's just such strange stuff.

There's something to the comment you made during the Hernandez section. Not starting a drawing with the head definitely seems easier when I tried it.

I tried it too and I also found it easier, like it felt more natural to draw that way.
