I think my favorite character was perhaps one of the saddest... that being the lady from the diner. You just got the impression she worked hard, sacrificed, and was just daring to try to enrich her life by starting a relationship with the sheriff. Only to have her decision to stop and use that number he gave her to call him for help actually be her undoing. Especially when the last thing she see's is that he was already a victim of that thing. Absolutely defeating and horrific, and so very, very sad.

Wow, that was cool. Thats some pretty phenomenal practical effects and a surprisingly clever and bold script for an 80s horror movie. Fun fact about the motorcycle stunt during the chase, that was a real stunt. When it landed, the bike blew both tires but the stunt driver kept it upright and going but since they had to have a wide shot they couldn't show the blown tires and had to swap out the shot much to the disappointment of the director.

This film almost had a mini six-degrees thing going on with Twin Peaks; Jack Nance who played Peter Martell on the show played the doctor in this movie, which also had the deputy played by Paul McCrane, who played Emil Antonowsky in Robocop, the criminal who fell into toxic waste and got run over by Ray Wise's character Leon Nash... Ray Wise having also played Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks. Robocop of course also had Bob Morton played by Miguel Ferrer, who played Albert Rosenfeld in Twin Peaks.

Kevin Dillan is related to Matt Dillan and has the same classy acting skill his sibling has. A pity he disappeared over the 90's yet Matt still pops up in films every so often. He was an amazing actor and played the rebel Flag very well. He never returned to the Horror genre so I dont know his recent work Shawnee played Amanda in the Saw series and Desperate hours with Anthony Hopkins and Mickey Rooke. 22:44 they mentioned it was hot and couldnt snow so the thing acts on HEAT. It wouldnt enter the freezer because it is weak to the cold in there

Shawnee Smith was in the Saw movies, Uncle Buck, Summer School and a tv show with Ted Danson called Becker. She’s been in a ton of movies since she was a kid. The sheriff was in The Mist and The Walking Dead. Candy Clark who plays the diner owner was in American Graffiti, The Man Who Fell to Earth and many other great movies.

This was filmed in Abbeville, Louisiana (not quite my hometown, but close enough) when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. It was filmed there because it was one of the few places the filmmakers could find that still had a city hall of that style. It's also why the cemetary looked the way it did (parts of Southern Louisiana are below sea level, so you can't really bury people without their bodies floating to the surface when it rains enough). A tv show Shawnee Smith was in you might (or might not) be familiar with is the Ted Danson sitcom Becker, or the Charlie Sheen sitcom Anger Management. This movie, much like The Stuff, but on a smaller budget, is a master class of practical effects. People often point to stuff like The Thing, but that didn't need many special effects shots until the halfway point of the movie. This one's got practical effects sprinkled in and around from almost the beginning. And with only a couple of exceptions of compositing and miniatures, they were done all in camera. Sure, sometimes, they had to run the footage in reverse, or tilt the camera to achieve the effect, but they were almost all done on the day they filmed the scenes. Unfortunately, this movie didn't do well in theaters, being barely marketed, but found its audience on home video and cable, becoming a cult hit.

Contrary to the saying, there is no permanently dark side of the moon. Just think about it for a minute. Otherwise there wouldn't be moon phases.
@robertyeah2259
@robertyeah2259 28 күн бұрын
@@pvanukoffdoesn’t that happen because the Earth’s shadow is being cast on the moon by the sun? Pretty sure the moon does rotate but it rotates so slowly that by the time it completes one rotation, it has already gone all the way around the Earth, so we only see one side of it because of it.
@pvanukoff
@pvanukoff 27 күн бұрын
@@robertyeah2259 The phases of the moon are not caused by Earth's shadow. Yes, that *can* happen, and when it does, it's called a lunar eclipse. It happens about once every 6 months. But no, when you look up at the moon at night and see a crescent shape, that is created because there is a part of the moon the light from the sun is not hitting. The "dark side" of the moon is just the side the sun isn't hitting at a given moment in time. And yes you are correct, we only see one side of the moon because it's tidally locked to us, but that has nothing to do with what part of the moon is in shadow or not. For some reason, people tend to conflate "the dark side of the moon" with "the side of the moon we can't see". They are different things.

The Thing, The Fly and The Blob are the perfect trifecta of 80s horror remakes. Not only remakes, but they're at the top of the genre as far as practical special effects go, and aren't likely to be topped. Films default to CGI now, even when they have budgets that could afford spectacular practical effects.
