The Blob (1988)
"I think....you pissed it off."
Join Angel as she watches and discusses The Blob (1988), a remake of the 1958 sci-fi, horror classic. Starring Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith as two high schoolers from different crowds who end up forming a bond and working together to try and save their small town when an acidic, blob like creature begins destroying everything and everyone in its path. Directed by Chuck Russell, with cinematography by Mark Irwin and special effects credited to 91 artists, The Blob is an incredible, creative visual treat, that's so horrific you won't want to look away....but WHAT exactly is it and WHERE did it come from?!? Let's find out!!!

Hi Angel, An American Werewolf In London (1981) it had some of the most incredible academy award winning special make up/practical effects and the GOAT werewolf transformation scene! Mesmerisingly horrific special make up/practical effects crammed into a just few terrifying minutes. + heart jolting jump scares & humorous moments too. Please react to this classic soon. I'm happy to be here as well and I'm so glad you're back :)

I can't remember if I've recommended The Wizard of Speed and Time to you before, but I am doing so --- now. It's a little indy movie from the 80's; made by a special effects man. It's a great story.🥰 (... and Mike Jitlov, the creator, made it public domain a few years ago.😉) It's one of my absolute favourites. Glad you're back.🌻

"I love her!" 😍 Shawnee Smith (Meg) was in a few other big movies in the 80's - Iron Eagle, Summer School, Who's Harry Crumb - but became very background in the 90s until she had a big career resurgence as Amanda in the Saw series. She's a pretty face I always enjoy seeing in stuff.

I love hearing about what else she's been in that you all have seen. She is terrific, and I really, really enjoyed her performance in this movie, and even though I've only seen the Saw movies (the first 3 once), I do now recall her face a bit and her playing the role well. I look forward to some of her other 80s movies, though, definitely!

I first noticed Smith in classic TV movies like Crime of Innocence (1985), Easy Prey (1986) and I Saw What You Did (1988), two of those co-starring fellow young '80s actress Tammy Lauren of Wishmaster (1997) fame. I think all three movies are on here YT but not in great copies, there may be rare DVD releases too of at least two of them.

Congrats on watching the "Holy-Trinity of '80s Remakes of '50s Sci-Fi Horror Classics!" The Blob, The Thing and The Fly. "The Blob" caught me completely off guard. As a kid I would watch the original whenever it was on TV so in the end I was like "how scary could a jello-mold be?" Watched this opening weekend and I was on edge and was amazed by the effects.

I kind of liked his character in this movie. He’s kind of the annoying Barney Fife deputy to the Andy Griffith sheriff, but he goes from threatening the biker kid he doesn’t like, to defending him a second later when the government guys are going to kill him. Most of the characters in this film are kind of likable.

This remake is great. Own it on 4K too. I stayed up late to watch this with my younger brother when I was 9 in 1989, back then most movies would get a tv premiere a year after being in theaters. It was terrifying seeing this as a kid but very enjoyable. I also have the original and the sequel to the original too. Kevin Dillon is awesome in Remote Control too 🤘 I have Brave New Love - Alien (the song at the end credits) on my cars USB drive 😅

Oh, nice. I bet 4K looks really cool for this movie. I love you remember staying up to watch it with your younger brother (in the year I was born...so not too much older than me haha). I can see how it would be terrifying while still enjoyable...I absolutely have some movies I watched around that age and younger that had the same effect on me. I haven't see Remote Control yet, but will keep it in mind, because I'd love to see more with Kevin Dillon, and that's awesome you have that song downloaded for your car. That'd definitely something I would do as well. Thanks so much for the comment!

@ang2489 you're welcome 🤘 yeah the 4K bluray is great on my 77-inch LG C2. You can tell some of the blob effects blue/green screen effects but it doesn't bother me. Yeah we had to be up to get ready for school the next morning at 6am, my mother kept giving us an attitude cuz watching this on Channel 11 with ads interruptions extended the time we were up haha 😄 we did end up getting up and going to school no problem. We lived through the movies 🎬 and fantasies they created in our imaginations. I definitely vouche for Remote Control. I have the bluray directly purchased and mailed to me from the director himself Jeff Lieberman. They are limited #'s so if not sold out you might be able to get a copy still if not, I can let you borrow mine I'd have to mail it to you or send you a digital file of it. That band Alien is still around. Was actually listening to one of their newer releases in my car earlier, the song "Time Is Right" good song 🎵 👌 👍🤘🤘 yeah born in 1981 😂 the 80's were my favorite childhood years and so the 90's too haha but the 80's were something else movies 🎬 , music 🎶

Steve McQueen was in the original 50's movie version (you should definitely give it a watch 😉🙂) & his son was asked to star in this movie, but he turned it down for two reasons: 1. He didn't like the script. 2. He has this rule of never playing a role his dad played earlier. Boo is like; "Crazy human chooping off his own paw..." 😜 30:50 That's Bill Moseley from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, House of 1000 Corpses & The Devil's Rejects. The doctor is played by Jack Nance from almost every David Lynch movies & Twin Peaks, the movie usher is played by Jamison Newlander, the 2nd Frog Brother from Lost Boys & someone already mentioned the deputy who was in RoboCop & Fame.

This remake is brilliant because it keeps you guessing on who will live and who will become blob food. It didn't do well in theaters, but it became a cult hit on home video and late night cable TV. Moss is played by character actor Beau Billingslea, who's best known as the English voice actor of Jet Black on the anime series, "Cowboy Bebop". Herb is played by Jeffrey DeMunn of "The Walking Dead", which the film's co-writer, Frank Darabont, worked on. They have a good working relationship. Fran is played by Candy Clark, who earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in "American Graffiti". That's a nice film to react to, Angel, if you want to get off the sci-fi horror train. Shawnee Smith, who played Meg, has appeared in the Saw franchise. Deputy Briggs is played by Paul McCrane, who played Emil from "Robocop". Glad you recognize Erika Eleniak as Vicki.

It was one of the first things I worked on (on set), starting in 2013. I love that that's actually him! And oh my gosh, I can't believe I didn't recognize the deputy was from Robocop! Love it!! Hi Angel!😊 Yep, there was the 50s "The Blob" and the sequel "Son of the Blob". This is one of the few horror reboots that is actually a very good film and worth watching.🏆 Most people don't realize that is Matt Dillon's brother.😉 The female interest Shawnee Smith (Meg) would end up on the 90s TV sitcom "Becker". In more recent years she would appear in some "Saw" films. Boo looks very healthy, good job. As soon as you said you liked that kid, he got killed, yikes!😱 Wow! This is my most traumatizing horror film of the 80s, after Robocop(I was too young lol). The way it kills, and the suffering attached to every death, never fails to make my skin crawl. Considering the number of times I rewatched this when it hit cable I must have a bit of a masochistic streak. BTW really felt that jump scare when the cat surprised you lol. Also psyched to see another movie fan who keeps their ticket stubs! Thought it was only me and another guy I used to know. Shawnee's reaction to seeing Paul was real, she hadn't seen the FX yet. For some reason I was allowed to watch this movie when I was 7 or 8, and the only reason I was allowed was that my Dad had seen the original as a kid and it scared the shart out of him, so he sympathized with me. When that Can Man tries chopping his own hand off, and The Blob doesn't freakin' let him?!! That like permanently ruptured the delicate membrane surrounding my childhood innocence. My favourite scene is the parking scene. "C'mon Vicki! You're wearing my ring!" Then they both get Blobbed! 😆 Or how about when the Waitress is calling for the Sheriff, and we see the Sheriff Blobbed up outside the phone booth, and his eyes are still looking around?!!!? So disturbing! I love it when they kill a kid, and it's because of The Blob. Nobody is safe! The attention to detail in this flick is so impressive! When that one Soldier/Scientist pulls his grenades and thinks he's sacrificing himself but then gets slapped down by The Blob, you can still see the little explosions going off inside, completely ineffectively. And if you're looking for a better FX extravaganza, you will not find it, but you can watch The Thing, you can watch The Fly, you can watch AWIL, cause those flicks are nearly all on par as far as gore and special FX. The Blob is an absolute FX Masterpiece! Maybe today they could make them like they used to, but they never will. I actually get a little emotional when I watch again, because I'm Horror addicted and I'm only really scared by like 5 movies, but this one gets my blood pumping and takes me back to my early childhood. To this day, when the Horrors of the world catch up with me in my dreams, I still find myself hiding in a deep freeze or a walk-in freezer. Hiding for my life from The Blob! Thank you for your reaction to this one! "The Lord will give me a sign." Still crossing my fingers🤞

The Blob (1988) Damn it, I need to start watching where I step, first the "gift" left by my neighbor's dog and now a space goop... I'm starting to run out of clean left shoes. But the one thing I'll never run out of, especially for you, Darling Angel, are these facts: •All of the exteriors for the movie were shot in a small south Louisiana town called Abbeville. Abbeville is laid out almost exactly the same as Arborville, Colorado, where the movie takes place. Abbeville was used because filming took place in late 1987, and Arborville was covered in snow. It's just a weird coincedence that the names are so similar. •Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont didn't have a lot of rules for the blob, but they agreed the general concept of the creature was it being an inside-out stomach meaning the acid is burning, melting, and devouring almost everything it touches. •Donovan Leitch Jr. (Paul) and Shawnee Smith (Meg) had known each other before this film as she was his date to his senior prom. He even wrote her a thank you note, which she's kept ever since. •This was released 30 years after the original version of The Blob (1958) and had a budget of 19 million dollar budget, which was reported to be almost 80 times the 1958 version. Also of that 19 million, 9 million went to the Blob FX. •Chuck Russell is a big advocate of storyboarding shots in advance. "When I first came to California, I gate-crashed Universal when Hitchcock was still working, went into Hitchcock's office, said I'm here to see Mr. Hitchcock, and I could see him working with a storyboard artist." •Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith both wore hair extensions at Chuck Russell's insistence. •A lot of the blob slime/juice was made out of methocel, which is both unbelievably slippery and a thickening ingredient for milkshakes."It's a waterboarding visual effect," says Chuck Russell in regard to the shot of the blob pulling over Paul's face. Also, that is really Donovan Leitch Jr. beneath it, and according to him, it feels like you're suffocating. •Co-writer Frank Darabont included many Stephen King references in this film, a lot of them focusing on The Stand. Shawnee Smith went on to star in The Stand (1994) as Julie Lawry. I always liked that adaptation. •Shawnee Smith's role as Meg would later earn her the job as Amanda Young in the Saw (2004) franchise because James Wan and Leigh Whannell were fans of this film. Not to mention, she's always stayed my number one horror crush of all time. And as I'm already about waste deep into the goop, which is slowly digesting me alive, I'd be remiss to first of all welcoming you back properly from your long hiatus and I just wanted to tell you that there are so many movies for you to experience but there's only one Angel Groves, and I'm really glad to see you back again. Until Next Time Angel 🖤

So happy you're here! Okay, first, that's so neat about the location and why they chose that location (since the other was covered in snow). The name coincidence is great, and I have a fondness for Louisiana, since my mom was born there (but in Baton Rouge). Oh, woah, I love the info about what the general concept for The Blob was/ being an inside out stomach with the acid burning everything. That makes so much so sense. Very cool. :) Ummm...what?!? That is so, so awesome that Donavan Leitch Jr. and Shawnee Smith knew each other (from prom!) before this. So sweet. Love it. Oh my goodness...the background info on that scene with the Blob being pulled over his face is intense. First of all, just thinking about it being a main ingredient for a milkshake's consistency, sounds like it could be suffocating, let alone it literally being pulled over your face. Bravo to Donovan Leitch Jr., and well....they really did do a great job. It look AMAZING...and HORRIFIC. haha I'll have to watch The Stand...I'm really glad you mentioned it. That's neat the co-writer focused on those references, and I love, love Shawnee Smith in this, so I'll absolutely watch the 1994 adaption. I see why she stayed your number one horror crush. She's epic in every way in this and will now forever be a kindred spirit of mine. haha. I love that James Wan loves this movie and that's why he wanted to cast her in the Saw franchise. I had no idea! Smart man. lol Thank you, again, Brian for your constant support and for being you. There's only one YOU! I'm beyond happy to be back. See you soon for the next one, love!

I saw both of these, The Blob 1958 and 1988. I don't say this too often, but I would say this one you just reacted to was the better of the two. This was certainly an 80's horror favorite of mine. The characters were awesome. I'd say you're right about Shawnee Smith's character, she was amazing. I like seeing her near at the end pick up that gun, too. I saw Kevin Dillon was in a lot of movies. His performance in this was good. His birthday is exactly four months after mine, but he's older. Yeah, I don't know why you couldn't react to the Blob of 1958. You might like it.

You should watch "The Mist" if you haven't. That was directed by this film's co-writer, Frank Darabont, based on a Stephen King story. Speaking of Darabont, he's a big King fan and the intersections between this movie and Stephen King's "The Stand" are numerous: Darabont would go on to do 3 amazing King adaptations (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist) Flagg, the Can Man, and Fran were all names picked by Darabont in homage to characters in King's "The Stand" George Romero also named a character Fran after the one in the Stand in Dawn of the Dead, the sequel to Night of the Living Dead - which The Walking Dead was based on, which Darabont brought to TV and is probably most famous for. (TWD also starred Jeffery DeMunn, the sheriff from this movie. He's also in The Mist) Shawnee Smith was in the TV adaptation of The Stand as one of the villains.

This was a good remake, but the one thing that has always bugged me about it is how thick and solid the blob looks. I have trouble believing that it can pass through small holes because it doesn't look that pliable. In the 1958 original, it was more of a formless, red jelly. There were no tentacles, or shapes, it was just a blob, and it was completely believable that the entire thing could squeeze through the smallest hole.

This reminds me of how Rob Zombie was thinking of making a remake of this himself. But it got cancelled. I know that not all of his films are well received and that he gets a good bit of critisism for even starting new film projects. But I would've really liked to have seen his take on this one. Especially since it seems there was going to be some sort of zombie horror element to it, which is my favorite horror genre.
