these areas already exist in the real world, we call them "Sacrifice Zones". The Bell Riots will happen eventually, they have to; we are a painfully broken society at so many levels. This is what has always made Star Trek what it is, at it's greatest it shines a light on our own brokenness.

The whole debate about refugees in the EU is just infuriating. People need help and are being repelled at the walls of the societies, who actually have more than enough ressources to do so... So yeah. Everyone seem to critizise this, yet no real consequences are drawn for years now. And this didn't even start with the syrian war.

As far as I'm concerned... The entire West Coast is more or less a gigantic "Sacrifice Zone" Especially most major cities in California. Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. However... Because of those places permissive behavior and willingness to throw away millions in tax dollars constantly catering to legions of homeless and drug addicts. Cities and states across the country see this and are more than willing to take advantage of the situation by bussing their own legions of homeless and drug addicted to the West Coast and honestly speaking... I don't blame them. Especially when virtue signalling has gone horribly off the rails. Thus, inviting problems to your doorstep.

We can look at the guards and administrators as victims of the same system as the occupants of the camps. "I was just following orders" is a very common theme. No matter who's side you are on there are the masters, those that just want to exist and those that are used for political gain. The guards and administrators; yes, are caught in the middle but their choice was that of survival for themselves and their loved ones. As opposed to patriotic duty.

I am just waiting for the Bell Riots in today’s society. There should be no excuse anymore for homelessness, hunger, clothing, or mental health care. Been binge-watching DS9 again lately. This ep hit a lot different after having been homeless. I've been there in the human cattle pens getting insulted and dehumanized by the better-offs for the audacity to require help to survive - there's a substrate of people who genuinely desire all the so-called Dims to perish overnight. Thank goodness it didn't take a riot to escape, but once you've been through it, you can really understand the motivation to start one. "A riot is the language of the unheard", and all... Anyway, great vid. I am now binge-watching all your lore videos too, haha.

The Bell Riots lore has always made me wonder what the whole world looked like, because weren't there supposed to be genetically engineered supermen running a good chunk of the 'east' long enough to be exiled into space? I'm sure if there's not a full connection, writers could make it work out if they needed to but a lot of the history doesn't connect in my head.

Great quote from this episode "BASHIR: But it makes you wonder, doesn't it? Are humans really any different than Cardassians or Romulans? If push comes to shove, if something disastrous happens to the Federation, if we are frightened enough, or desperate enough, how would we react? Would we stay true to our ideals or would we just stay up here, right back where we started? "SISKO: I don't know. But as a Starfleet officer, it's my job to make sure we never have to find out." We found out in season one of STP what the world looks like when starfleet officers fail at that job. Also worth noting in STP S2 E2 the Borg Queen sent Picard back to the exact year of these riots where the timeline was changed. It has to be linked to the events of this DS9 episode somehow.

I haven’t rewatched it yet but they’re in IIRC April or May, so we won’t see the riots themselves but there’s still plenty of room to tie it in such as Gabriel Bell‘s arrest or something. BTW I love how they’re tying ICE and ICE camps in with the Sanctuary Districts; when writing _Past Tense_ they had to imagine a special policing force to check for ID crimes, but we have that IRL already (with racialised overtones >.>) so using it is IMO a nice touch. ICE brings you in and takes you to a Sanctuary District. Mixing-in our reality with Trek’s instead of totally overwriting it.

Good points. One key element: Out of Sight, Out of Mind. If you cannot see the suffering, it is easy to believe the official narrative that everything is fine. People only turn on a system when they are confronted with the suffering it caused. Abolition of slavery only gained popular support when abolitionists forced people to see the harm of slavery. The Civil Rights Movement succeeded in part because ordinary people were forced to see the suffering of blacks under segregation. Showing the suffering clearly is the only way to overcome systematic oppression disguised as benevolent separation. We only support such a system while we can tell ourselves the people inside do not suffer.

It is interesting that in _Picard_ not all Sanctuary Districts are walled off, some look remarkably like today’s tent towns. Which I’m sure was deliberate. To your message at the end: Total agreement. Further, I would not be surprised if the majority of human suffering was caused, not by malice or wickedness or corruption, but misplaced righteousness. "It's for your own good" said with full sincerity while plunging a knife into someone's back. Be it, as in this case, a government's misaimed attempt to 'solve' an issue, or the supposedly devoutly religious deciding that God isn't punishing sinners fast enough, or some other shortsighted fool who believed a complicated longstanding issue could be solved with a simple solution. How much suffering must such people cause, for our own good?

*"it's not that they don't care, it's that they've given up."* This is so accurate and such a major problem. The wealth gap is growing immensely and the number of people just getting forgotten about and left behind is rising along with it. People just don't want to actually care. I can't even say I'm not one of said people. We all feel powerless and just caring becomes such a struggle, so we end up becoming complicit in a system we hate.

"Sometimes you have to get violent to show change" I think history has proven this to be true, but I also think... it's complicated. In the episode Sisko tries to walk an impossible line; take hostages, but treat them (reasonably) well and keep them alive. He knew that if he didn't keep them alive the public wouldn't take their side. They had to revolt, but further acts of violence would not get them what they wanted. Tragically what led to change was the violence perpetrated by the police. Gabriel Bell had to die and become a martyr. Violence forces a reaction and can trigger change, both good and bad. Some situations call for violence, but generally I think it's a solution of last resort. And it's that restraint that was key to the success of the Bell Riots.

You're not wrong, at all. Now, my own headcanon is that as the beginning of automation and concerns over machines taking over jobs the high-end technological 'Smart machines' would actually be able to make businesses profitable without the expenses of employees. Couple that with several billion more people than existed at the turn of the 20th century and that innovation would leave billions out of work causing the worst fears of the common people to be very much justified. Just like an elevator operators' job disappeared back in the mid 20th century, blue-collar work in the Trek universe is done only by automation with no danger to human life. Sounds great on paper, but the reality is not.

I love your deep look at Star Trek and you have definitely adjusted my thinking on many trek issues. Sorry for all the hate some people shoot your way "they suck", you do a great service and produce a great product. Only thing that stands out for me is how easily you promote real world propaganda. I wish you could apply your critical eye to the real world a bit more when commenting on it. Having said that still love your stuff and always looking forward to your next take on an episode, faction, or series. Thank you.

See, you have more faith in Star Trek Picard writers than I do. I too assume that the Bell riots will be mentioned but I dreadfully fear that they are going back in time to make sure the right person is elected president in 2024. I don't know if they will straight up use President Trump or if they will make up a President Trump analog ,like Dr who did, but that's where I'm afraid they're going. I hope I'm wrong but we'll see.

This episode is awesome. I'm going through DS9 for the first time. I live in l.a., and the "sanctuary" zones look just like the tent cities here. I'm sure san Francisco is the same, with its massive wealth inequality and homelessness and untreated mental illness. Barbaric, just like San Francisco in 2024 in star trek

The irony is the cause of most issues is Government Policies, then people ask government to do something, and the very people who caused the problem then make those matters worse and then as a result. People accept or revolt. But they always keep coming back to allowing government to get involved in the personal lives or policies that caused the very issues in the first place. We look to Government as Rulers and their word is final and productive when they aren’t supposed to be involved in any of that. But the issue is, WE THE PEOPLE allow it and accept it.

Posting from start of 2024... no riots yet (supposedly less than 9 months to go to the Bell riots), but plenty of tensions rising. Concerns for overseas wars may start to spread globally, already existing economic and housing crisis only made worse by ever increasing flood of illegal immigrants into US over the last several months. Looming election by end of year only causing even more tensions on top of everything. Feels like things just keep boiling up, and if continue to get worse could reach the tipping point to cause some kind of uprising.

Would Sisko have needed to take Bell's place if he wasn't part prophet? In Trek time-travel does and does not affect the timeline. This seems to depend on the form of time-travel used, but not always. Sisko we now know by the end of the show too of been half Prophet. A species with a very different relationship with spacetime than Humans - See Siskos mum. The other form of Prophet based time-travel we know of if through one of thier orbs. A method we are lead to believe could of changed the timeline. So if Sisko wasn't part Prophet, would his presence in the past of caused Bell to of been killed, or would the fully human Sisko and Bashir just stayed as observers?

Is the Star Picard timeline now not canon because their version of 2024 kinda doesn't align with what happened with the Eugenics wars, leading to the Bell Riots in this video and then WWIII. Because according what San Fran looks like in DS9 when Sisko and Bashit went to the past...it's obvious that the writers didn't watch DS9 and remember this episode that has an exact date and time

What should be learned from the Bell Riots is the government can not solve social problems like poverty by spending more money on social programs. Since President Johnson declared a "war on poverty" in 1964 the government has spent over 15 trillion on welfare programs. Did that money make any systemic difference. Well, it doesn't look like it. In 1964, the poverty rate was 19 percent. About 10 years later, it was 11.2 percent, and it has not gone above 15.2 percent any year since. What helps poorer areas is more law enforcement and proactive policing. Lowering the crime rate spurs investment by private businesses. We see how the opposite idea is causing more homeless and crime in California. California has already had a homeless problem because of rising housing costs. However, with their efforts with "criminal justice reform," the crime rate and homeless problem has rose dramatically. There are already "sanctuary districts" in San Francisco, LA, Sacramento and San Diego.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 2 жыл бұрын
Just from your own stats it sounds like it made a 25-50% reduction in poverty? (Plus the episode literally says government intervention to provide real homes and job opportunities is key for the existence of The Federation… so if you’re gonna make judgments about our world based on a fictional story, your comment seems a bit incoherent?)

Yeah but as Lorerunner has pointed out, it's not as easy as just giving out jobs, what are you supposed to do when there simply isn't enough employment to go around? I mean what do you want the government to do, just create jobs that serve no purpose simply so that people get paid? Japan does that with its construction industry and billions of yen are wasted every year building highways that go nowhere just to prop up employment numbers.

This and Paradise are episodes that show how much things have changed since the 90s, since the very people who wrote the episodes agree with the politics that led to their respective dystopias but where self aware enough of this fact to not shy away from it and there's even a line about a communist government in Europe putting down a student protest as communists seem to do regularly. Given the day and age we live in and the fact there is no connection between the Bell Riots of the Star Trek canon universe and the Discovery universe I have absolutely no doubt in my mind the cause is going to be blamed on the real world solution to such problems, the solution is going to propose doubling down on the cause, and somehow white men will be collectively blamed for it. Some could call that an uncharitable prediction and to them I'd ask what they've been watching these past 6 years as it would evidently not include any American made media.

A riot is a riot, regardless of who or what it is for or against. Whether January first or the countless summer riots. There will always be malcontents, there will always be those who fall through the cracks, there will always be haves and have nots.
