How do you stop and go at lights im 5 3 and want this bike but not sure how long I can keep it up during rides if I'm doing every now and then

I looked for a year. I was in touch with a dealer. And they got in a lowered version with a custom low seat. Mine is not a standard low but one that was lowered so its a little lower than the standard. I wear boots and if the seat wasnt so low. I dont think it would work. I also make sure to not stop in sunkin spots. Im still on my tippy toes!

The GS isn't particularly tall and compresses a lot when you are on it. The Africa twin for example, with proper off road suspension is way taller.

Did most of the techniques with a pillion rider earlier today, it's a decent workout but you can still ride quite challenging terrain!

Same happened to me twice in the mountains of Peru in the span of a week...first and then second time I went down after riding for over a year from northern colombia through ecuador and through Peru, this was on the return. It was a smooth channel that they constructed both times to allow runoff from the Mountain across the road. Had the same impact as if i was riding over a manhole cover. I discovered it was a layer of silt made worse with a growth of algae, just like you it turned it into what felt like ice with no control whatsoever. I was lucky i was wearing a good helmet the first time as I was going at a fair speed when I went down, otherwise I wouldn’t be here today, my helmet saved my life. Still got plenty of bruises but no broken bones thank god. Here’s what I can offer for advice based on my feedback from others and my own analysis. First I stuck around on the first and second to see what others were doing. Sure enough, riders locally knew only too well the danger and on the first channel I saw a rider slow down and navigate to the flattest part of the slope and slowly pass where some rubble had gathered to provide some grip. He maintained the bike perpendicular to the channels’ angle which was on a curve and held his body perpendicular to the earth, for example if he leaned his body with the bike angle there would be less contact for the tires. No increase or decrease of the throttle and no braking, your speed has to be approximated going in to get you through the other side. On the other channel a few days later the channel was totally level although the water was a bit deeper. I went in with all the above thoughts in my mind and went down. This time the current and the mud and silt was just to strong to be able to stay upright, even though it didn’t appear that bad. I stuck around and watched all the locals go through a natural part of the river bed runoff adjacent to the drainage channel. They knew from experience that entering on the slippery channel was a no no. So in summary, there’s a strategy to get across in many cases, but with all the skill in the world you will not get across if your tires have nothing to grip hold of and the stream or channel is so wide the momentum will not carry you through to the other side. Now I am super cautious with any stream or runoff channel I come across that’s looks like there may be mud or algae underneath and have no problem walking it first if in doubt and pick my best option and so far so good but for good or bad it’s made me dread those types of crossings. Btw, I consulted with a well known round the world biker on this and he told me what I wrote for the first fall remedy, as far a walking the bike across on a slippery channel I would be surprised if that is the best option but I suppose it depends on the grip you have with your feet to be able to stabilize your bike, with a super heavy bike i wouldn’t risk it but with a lighter bike maybe..

In the BMW basic rider skills class, they teach how to walk the bike through water obstacles. Basically, walk beside it, idling in first gear, feathering the clutch. The advantages to walking it are lower overall center of gravity when the rider isn't on top of the bike, and a much larger multipoint contact area rather than trying to balance the bike over the narrow box between the two wheel contact patches. At low speed you don't have the gyroscopic stability of the spinning wheels so it needs to be balanced over the wheelbase. Ironically, it would be easier to get up some speed and coast straight across the slick algae bottomed stream, but the impact energy in a fall would be much greater so there might be broken bones instead of bruises if you crashed.

I know walking it is not a guarantee to make it across the icy slippery algae covered cement, but you are sooo right, a slip and fall from walking is far different from the slam down force my wife took to her helmet! From the passenger seat in second gear! Thanks again for your thoughts, now I just have to find a way to get my wife back in the saddle. That day was our last ride as she understandably refuses to get back on any of our motorcycles :(

He probably killed it & left it geared, but w/out good audio it's hard to tell. I sure didn't see him re-fire it once he walked it down so it gives the impression that he used some kind of parking brake or lock.

It's pretty fun to go slow as well :) I used to stand still @ the red lights without putting feet down with pretty heavy bikes, that sure got some attention haha.

Made me laugh a bit to see comments talking about this sort of riding not being difficult or what's the big deal with this. So dumb. This is alot more difficult than it looks, particularly with a bike that size. Most people can't do a full lock turn on a 125.

you should have taken a feed from the sound desk , and recorded the audio that way , id be guessing ,,, too much ambient noise ruins your video ,, shame.

In a perfect world yes... but I was filming with a camcorder... the ambient noise is always desperate at these events... I may however have something a lot better coming very very very soon... if all goes well :D

There are heavier bikes if thats what you're looking for... 1190/1290 KTMs are heavier... Yamaha Super Tenere is heavier too...

Have had one for a few years now, never expected to like it, but they are a great ride. Thrash it on the road. Thrash it off road. Has never bitten back on the black top, but have fallen off it and dropped it a few times off road, pick it up dust it off carryon. Bloody impressive really. Ride one and you will probably own it!
