The best action movies are the ones where the heroes are still human. Great examples of that are Die Hard, the first 3 Bourne films, The Dark Knight Rises, and the first 3 Indiana Jones films
@kingkingf8 жыл бұрын
+Mr. GMAN's Channel haven't seen this movie and not planning to see it in the near future, but I just (re-)watched the original tirlogy and have to say that Bourne is only partially "human". To be exact, he is human in the 1st film (exept the very last scenes where he takes initiative and attacks the CIA, but that was OK for me). It's kind of ironic, that his "humanity" dies with his girlfriend in the beginning of the 2nd film. She was the only thing that made him vulnerable in this movie. Since then he is just butt-raping the CIA. He is like Hulk against Loki's army. From that on there is just no thrill at all and you know that no one will be able to endanger him. The fight scenes are maybe not completly "tensionless" but still very foreseeable. The only thrill that is the 3rd film is when Bourne tries to protect the "still human" journalist, but unfotunately he dies way to soon.

kingkingf You are wrong. There was still humanity in his character throughout these movies. He was never going to kill Nicky like that in Supremacy, where he is at his most darkest. In Ultimatum, he is fully coming to terms with everything he ever did. Then Jason Bourne (2016) came and decided to turn him into a bored street fighter.

Jeremy Renner is a capable actor.... Yeah I think that best describes him. Sometimes I just don’t understand how Hollywood green lights movies like this, Great actors, Big Budget and Bland script with a story that will be forgotten within hours. Shame the trailer looked so good.

I honestly didn't even notice there was a lack of action... There definitely is more than 10 minutes worth and a great final chase scene that lasts at least 10 minutes in itself, and it is very well done.
@Spar10Leonidas8 жыл бұрын
I don't really understand why people seem to dislike this movie. I get that it's less action-oriented than the previous films, but not so much that I felt bored (by the way, that shooting scene in the laboratory was hauntingly disturbing). I'm also curious as to what the script looked like when Damon and Greengrass saw it, because there's no way it could have been too similar to what we got. Having Bourne as the main character in this movie (and that being the only difference) would make no sense in regards to the plot. Now, for the record, I've read only the first three Bourne books (speaking of which, potential SPOILERS for the books, ahead), I haven't read any of the books since Eric Van Lustbader took over, including Legacy, but for whatever they have planned for any Bourne sequels, I think I would be interested in seeing a crossover between Bourne and Cross that results in a confrontation similar to Bourne's encounter with Alcott-Price in The Bourne Supremacy. I wouldn't want it to be exactly the same (as Alcott-Price was insane), but something along those lines.
@thefirstbourne1495 жыл бұрын
+Spar10Leonidas Well, I just grew a little bit too hateful the last time, but...here's the thing. You clearly didn't hear his criticisms. He didn't say that he didn't like it because it wasn't action-oriented. Heck, that's not even a reason that I don't like it. Even when the action is there, there really isn't much tension. I barely know anything about the drive of this character before he goes on his journey, which was really done much better in The Bourne Identity. His action journey only started when he realized he needed more pills. Bourne's journey started right from the beginning when he was trying to discover who he was when he woke up. I guess Cross doesn't necessarily have to have the drive delivered to him that early either, but even his drive I don't think was as compelling as Bourne's. We also barely know anything about this guy by the end of the movie.. And, like Stuckmann says, regardless of how this mythology goes, he just simply is not going up against anyone that could challenge him. That's a real waste of potential. I don't like the chems, or the fact that they had to do that to explain that that's how their skills worked, because that's just turning the series into a sci-fi movie (whereas it made much more sense to just torture the guys to become tough), but the worst part is more just the fact that he doesn't go up against anyone who can challenge him.

I need to watch this movie again. Because me and my friend who is a pathetic action addict (so much that he even wanted to skip any non-action scene from John Wick) both LOVED it. It really feels like we have not seen the same movie.
@TheAlan5588 жыл бұрын
I think this is an 'ok' movie. For me, it was not boring, it was not a bad movie, I liked it, it was enjoyable. About the action, I would not call it a 'lack of action' but an acceptable, well constructed final action (in the third act). Btw, you get my point, I enjoyed it too.

Since Damon wanted out and got out, he really shouldn't have slammed Legacy. It was a pretty decent sequel, well acted by Renner and Weisz. Usually agree with Stuckmann, but part company on Legacy.
@2013branth9 жыл бұрын
I'm a fan of Ludlum's work, and the Bourne movies sets up the programs to create assassin's who are extremely capable through psychological conditioning. Legacy on the other hand retcons that idea and replaces it with a pill that grants them "superpowers", that in itself really detracts from what makes the Bourne movies. Legacy no longer feels human, it's feels directionless, it feels like a cash grab.
@thechinadesk9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Good point. Not necessarily the only valid perspective, but definitely worth considering. But if Damon cared so much, shouldn't he have stayed on to forestall just such an eventuality?
@2013branth9 жыл бұрын
Bevin Chu He stated he would stay on if Greengrass was going to do a sequel. As much as we like to think Damon is the driving force, we need to keep in mind that the actors are only a facet of a movie.

It should've been it's own thing. The Bourne title set expectations too high for what this movie was at the time. If it was it's own thing with a different title and it hinted being set in the same universe as the other movies it would've been much better.

This movie gets better for me everytime I watch it. It's a great companion to Bourne 2 and 3 showing how the tread stone, blackbriar, outcome programs transformed after Bourne got off script. When I saw it in theaters I said to my self, "it's good but Jeremy is not Matt." And for that reason I gave it a 7/10. Now it's a 8/10. Give this one another try!!!

@JohnDoe-zw5mk6 жыл бұрын
I loved this movie, saw it several times. It has a different perspective on operations running parallel to treadstone and clearly indicates that it's not a prequel. The struggle to find meds and agency ops had a classic take of events with absolute suspense. I guess on some (subconscious)level people already rejected the idea of a bourne sequel without matt in in it. Don't get me wrong i love matt too but another aspect of agency's handling rogue agent was simply astonishing Jeremy was definitely the right choice for this. To me the story cast and direction everything was well crafted
@thefirstbourne1493 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but I don't get those chemical things. What classic take on events is this? When did people actually like having chemicals take the place of really harsh mental conditioning like the previous movies? Better yet...when was this a classic trope of political or spy thrillers? If it was James Bond, it doesn't work in the Bourne universe, but it'd still be something. I don't even remember other spy thrillers using this concept of kind of enhancing medicine, but they can only do extreme stunts and...that's about it. It's actually kind of interesting on a level of, "Wow, they actually wrote this?", but not in a way that makes me think that this would exist in the world they set up. Jeremey Renner did fine for what he was supposed to, but his character isn't interesting. He wasn't looking for something better than himself, and he barely really changed even a small part of himself. He didn't have to lose his personality or lose some of the flaws we love about the guy, if there even were any (seriously, I don't remember anything about the guy). But this actor is really talented!! Renner is so talented! Why is his character so, so uninteresting? I would have been fine with a Bourne movie or a movie within that universe that wasn't Bourne, but they clearly want to be a Bourne movie in a certain way! The very title is not only the exact same font, but it has that exact same title presentation as the first movie!! Also in a very strange turn of events, this movie has a sound effect for everything. I don't remember if it was actually the full movie, but where the first movie just decided to let the title reveal itself, this movie adds computer beep typing/programming sound effects to it. The sun even gets its own sound effect in one scene. Even before I watched Legacy, I thought this series was a sci-fi series, since the trailer brought up the whole, "It's such an interesting development...in the SCIENCE!!" Where does that fit in this universe? When I was kind of watching the trailer for that movie, I was thinking, "Well, that must be what the Bourne series is about. The reviews look a little troubling, but...I guess is this what it's about, but we're mad that Bourne isn't in it?" Nope. The minute I finished the first movie, I loved it, but then had the troubling thought of....wait a second, then comes the fourth movie that brings in that really insane concept. Actually, that feeling didn't even come that strong with the first one, since I didn't even see the other two yet, so it's really by the third one that I started to have that feeling of hope flowing away from my head. It was gone right there, since not only did they not introduce that this is how it works in the first three movies, but the first three movies weren't even about how it works. This is kind of like a prequel since it shows behind the scenes stuff, but then it's also a not-quite continuation of what happens after Bourne exposed the agency's wrongdoings, yet it happens at the same time he does so. This really is a kind of uninteresting mess that at time is more interesting because of the choices they make. I guess because of this, I would almost be more interested in watching this than the fifth-ish movie, since that was more disappointing on the level that they had it's most compelling character back, and they made him only a little more compelling than Renner was, which is already a really low bar.
@SumDumGy_formerly_Tim_Walden7 жыл бұрын
I had no trouble following or immersing myself in this film. I did not find it dull or boring. I will agree that there's little palpable tension but this film has basically the exact same amount of action as The Bourne Identity has. It gets an extra black mark simply for being an unbourne Bourne film. As Chris said, he was harsher Thatn he would have been had it come with a different title.
@anonymousR77 жыл бұрын
I actually like this one as much as Ultimatum. That's neither a good or a bad thing. I hated how much Bourne talked in Ultimatum, the same way I hated how much Cross talked in Legacy. But the action and tension was about the same. I mean, out of the two, you couldn't add scenes of CIA people gasping when they saw Cross on monitors, or fear in their eyes the same way that we saw in Bourne Identity. Bourne's a bigger and more ominous threat

Yes it should have because it came from the same connective tissue that is the Bourne franchise. The Ludlum books don't just focus in on Jason Bourne, they also focus in on other characters who are like Bourne. One of them is Aaron Cross. He's in the book canon.

Jeremy's character is chemically altered and, technically, more advanced as a killing machine than Jason Bourne. Aaron Cross is far less human and therefore the story needs more exposition. You would have understood it had you realized that Cross is super Bourne because of the drugs, etc.

I just re watched this movie since seeing it 3 years ago and I'd say I loved it more the second time. Yes this franchise Is suppose to be lots of action but, I truly enjoyed the plot and I feel the writing was spot on. I'll give you an example: when jumping on The back of the motorcycle he asks her if she's ever rode on a bike and she said no so he hands her a helmet. Now, why is that good writing? 2 fold. 1) makes us understand she is NOT a secret assassin and has zero skill unlike EVERY OTHER MOVIE. 2) helps get your focus off the fact if she's a stunt double because the helmet helps hide in certain shots and allows us just to go for The ride and enjoy.

I like this movie, I just think they should have left the word Bourne out of the title. Because Bourne is no longer in it. Aaron Cross was in a completely different program than Bourne. Bourne was brainwashed and trained that's it. While Cross wasn't brainwashed, he was recruited out of the Army to participate in something like a "Super Soldier Program", where his physicality and mental aptitude are enhanced by pharmaceuticals which I thought was a welcomed change of pace. Only part that was stupid is when he told the girl he's running around with that he can't go off his meds or else his IQ will drop all the way down near the level of mild retardation. That part was just, "Come on, are we really suppose to believe a guy like Norton's character is going to recruit a grunt with an IQ too low to even be accepted into the Army as a person to put into a super soldier program?" That was the dumbest part of the movie in my opinion, it didn't ruin it, but it did kinda stick in your mind itching away like a splinter for the rest of the film. Renner's a good actor, and overall I liked the movie, but it's really hard to get past the part where the audience is introduced into his non-medicated past where he had to cheat on his test just to get accepted into the Army because of mild retardation.

Although I didn't love the film, I agree with what you said because the film was still very entertaining. I think that most people just can't get over the fact that the lead wasn't Matt Damon, and was also confused by the title, since Jason Bourne wasn't in it. The first 15 or so minutes, which was trying to set the scene, was a bit boring, but once the action kicks in, it felt like a Bourne movie. The acting was great. The only problem I found with the film was the pills.

I love the Bourne Ffranchise. And I love Legacy the best! Gulity pleasure? I think not. Aaron may be invincible but he is deffinately vulnerable a lot. A lot about the plot is about him missing vital chems to be functional. Without it he will get sick and maybe die. If he makes it he will be dumb again, as he was before entering the program. How is that not vulnerable? In the final motorcycel chase scene he passes out on the bike. Martha has to step up to save the day. As for the missing action. I didn't notice and I thought it was very exciting. I counted 7 kickass action scenes. Get a grip.

Doesn't surprise me at the slightest. The book was the exact same way. It had some good points in it, but all n all there was very little reason for it to exist in the first place. I'll probably end up seeing this movie because I'm curious, but who knows. Might see Batman again for the 4th time in a row this weekend. Great review Chris! Keep it comin man!

I liked it a lot more the second viewing. Maybe some of it is that it takes the second viewing to really grasp all of the backstory and such. I liked that it was set during the events of Bourne Ultimatum, so you get the feeling of a larger world and see some connections. It's not as good as the Damon trilogy, but I do like it.

Great review, and solid points, although I disagree. The action scenes pretty much made up for any pacing issues in the movie for me, and I felt like there was definitely more than 10 minutes. Heck, that last chase scene alone felt like 10 minutes to me! Anyway, can't wait to talk about it on the podcast this weekend. Should be fun!

To be fair, i never was interested in the Bourne films, but i thought i could get them all on DVd and see what all the fuss and praise was about, but i didn't...yet. I was mixed on this but what really took my attention was Remner and Edward Norton along side other actors i recognize like Oscar Issac, Donna Murphy, Zejko Ivanek, and esp. Rachel Weisz, oh and Scott Glen from SOTL. But i would still wanna see it.

Well...I'm sad to find out there's so much non-action stuff in this. But, the only reason I'm seeing this is for Jeremy Renner. I haven't seen the other 3 films, so I'll have no idea what's going on plot-wise anyway :) Great review, though, as always Chris!

There's quite a lot of world building in Bourne Legacy. The problem with world building is that you necessitate exposition. Sometimes you get lucky and can cinematically establish the stakes in a prologue, as in Fellowship of the Ring. But most of the time it's the filmmakers making it up as they go, deciding whether visual details and/or verbal explanation are best employed to encourage the audience's investment in the story.

I enjoyed this movie. The only thing I didn't like about it was the length....the first 40 minutes felt like nap time. Why the fuck was the guy in a snowy mountain for so long? Why was he there in the first place?! Never understood that.
@lkf87993 жыл бұрын
I actually like this movie more than the 2nd and 3rd Bourne films because of the plot/characters. The only thing really good about 2 & 3 WAS the action (except him trying to make amends to that Russian girl). Bourne Legacy had a sympathetic main character that I really liked and there was a LOT of action. Did we watch the same movie? There was a mass shooter scene, drone strike tracking chip w/ a freaking wolf pack, the scene at the farmhouse with those agents trying to interrogate/gaslight/eliminate her, the factory escape, that footchase scene where he does that cool drop between the buildings, and the entire motorcycle chase scene during the finale! Also he was in danger a lot: the drone strike, surviving losing his meds and getting the virus for the new DNA version, super-terminator dude coming after him, and he did get shot and had enough blood loss to pass out and crash the motorcycle. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt way it ended. Cue Moby song. Maybe you should watch it again. There are a few movies I've seen where I didn't like it the first time and then I watched it again and really appreciated it. Another problem might be the fact that this is part of a franchise and because it's a spin-off and doesn't have some of the elements of the original trilogy there's a predisposition to judge it more harshly than usual. For instance, I liked Quantum of Solace but because it was an actual sequel and not a typical Bond film with the gadgets and the girls and the one-liners, a lot of people didn't care for it, because there are expectations for the franchise to follow a certain formula. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it forms a bias I think.

I think I have a gift that allows me to understand most complex films to about 70% on first viewing, and I get that some films are complex and confusing, but if people complain about not getting a film after the first viewing, then maybe it's because it's meant to be seen multiple times. However, I don't necessarily love Legacy, and I've seen it enough times to understand it and how it ties in with the original trilogy, but I feel that people shouldn't complain that a certain film isn't their type of horror, or their type of comedy, or action. I don't think it's a cash grab. If anything, the books were more of a cash grab. It's a decent film. Not the best, but I wouldn't make it a grade C type of movie either. Just my thoughts.
@thefirstbourne1497 жыл бұрын
This movie was not complex...it was indeed a cash grab. This film talked about stuff that didn't have much to do with anything. It was a convoluted mess of a film. This definitely deserves a C, and I don't think this was able to work even that well as a standalone thriller. This wasn't a very exciting movie or anything with at least some movement. Complex really allows one to absorb complicated themes. Even those films that are dramatic and such aren't filled with all talking. This film, however, was. I don't see how the books are a cash grab, because the movies were based off the books. Unfortunately, that's why this mess of a film got made...because there was a fourth book.

I saw this film at a screening last night & I hated it. I thought the script was weak and I thought there was a serious the lack of action also & Jeremy Renner basically took the Super Solider serum from Captain America haha. I'm glad you agreed with most of my thoughts because I thought I was missing something about this film and being really harsh on it
@CinematicGalaxy11 жыл бұрын
cont. In a lot of ways, this film almost feels like a mirror of The Bourne Identity, just with different characters and different situations, if that makes any sense. I actually really liked how the film connected with the story of the previous films. And while I never exactly feared for Cross's life, I feared for Rachel Weisz's characters life, therefore I still felt the action had tension. I understand people being underwhelmed, but I really, REALLY enjoyed this movie.

Not a lot of people realize is that the Bourne Films are actually based from Robert Ludlum's Bourne book series from the 80s to late 90s of the same title. The Bourne Legacy was also a book from a different author that came out in 2004 after the book "The Bourne Ultimatum, which was Robert Ludlum's last Bourne book he ever wrote in 1990. There are 10 books in the Bourne series. The Bourne Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum, Legacy, Betrayal, Sanction, Deception, Objective, Dominion, and Imperative.

Right...what are you talking about?? 1. Hes meant to basically be a superhero...hes enhanced. 2. 10 mins of action? The bike scene at the end is longer than 10 mins on it's own. 3. How did you not understand what was goin on? 4. It's not a prequel, its happening parallel to ultimatum, its couldnt be more clear, they literally show you parts of ultimatum in this movie. There is nothing wrong with this movie, it just opens up the bourne universe more. I'd like to see more from other shady government experiments like treadstone, black briar etc

Saw it today. Liked it quite a bit. I actually appreciate that it isn't stuffed with action and they took their time to set things up. The long sequence of CIA tracking his movements after the incident was quite fun to watch even if the suspense was killed a bit because you knew they had such a lead. They should have just killed all the references to Bourne. Even worse, somebody hints at one point that Bourne is in New York and then they drop it. But it still was pretty watchable.

I partly agree with Chris' review. but I want to give this movie a two Thumbs Up for its action elements. I mean, YEAH, at least even on that they gave justice to the Franchise :) I also want to congratulate my country- - The Philippines since this film depicted our country well and it described the Filipino Values using some of our great actors and actresses who are extras and the one who had the minor role, Joseph, the guard played by John Arcilla. :) All in all, the movie is fairly good :)

Damn, one of the major things i loved from the Bourne movies was that the stakes are always really high. As much as Bourne is the best fighter, he's always at risk and he has the amnesia thing against him, so all the time, he doesn't know exactly who he was or how he became a trained assassin. As u said all of the people seemed from the real world, but put in these extreme situations. Too bad that Cross is all superhero-like, that just makes it a generic action flick, but without much action...
@danielkandisnooker79903 жыл бұрын
Rachel Weisz was the best part of the movie. Her acting in this is the only thing that brings tention. She conveys how scared or tense she is... But it's just not enough to carry it home. The best scene for me was the lab scene... Gotta luv a good psycho switch like that. Had me on the edge.

I think you said it best during your Bourne Identity review. Any time spent away from Jeremy or Rachel seems wasted. The conversations between Norton and anyone else sounds like mechanics talking about engine timings from cars of the 1970s. I want another movie! And I kind of wish Bourne and Cross would meet somehow. I wish that one of gets cornered and the other helps him out. Then they rescue the president while fighting in North Korea to stop a nuke launch that will kill 10s of dolphins.
@rhettgedies74678 жыл бұрын
It's not really a prequel. Some of its events take place at the same time as _The Bourne Ultimatum_, but that's about it. Otherwise it is merely to be taken as the fourth film or a spin-off of the original trilogy.

Yeah. It's a look at the ripple effects that Bourne has on other operatives while he's in New York. I feel that if people paid attention to the fact that Bourne wasn't the only one of his kind, and Legacy hadn't been made, people would be begging to have a spinoff film about another operative like Bourne
@rhettgedies74677 жыл бұрын
***** Never said it was a reboot. In fact, the new film's (_Jason Borurne_) description on the trailer is marketing it as a "sequel to _The Bourne Legacy_." This film was basically film 4....with a spin-off feel.

I also don't really understand what you mean by Aaron seeming invincible. He was genetically altered to be a superhuman so the fact that he could take his opponents easily wasn't really a surprise. And from what I picked up in the movie JB and Aaron Cross are in two different programs . I hope they do a fallow up bc I really want to learn more about Aaron Cross.
