I also really enjoyed your analysis here - I've never actually thought about how Luffy's sandals and straw hat contrast him to the formality of the marines, or how his sleeves enhance the way his stretching looks.

my absolute favorite design choice of Gear 5th is that Luffy doesnt have Knees or Elbows. he's completely smooth and rubbery, without hardly any harsh angles and lines. its PERFECT to symbolize just how ridiculous the power of Nika truly is

I’ve never noticed just how much of genius piece of design work Luffy’s hat is. It visually signifies him (It is his trademark and his epithet) but it also give him the illusion of simian ears when displayed in profile, completing the ‘monkey’ look. However, the most genius trick it pulls is in how the red band and the top of the hat itself mimics a sun rising over a horizon line. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

Gear 5 having endless possibilities play was perfect

My absolute favorite part of Luffy's design throughout the islands is how he adapts to them and embraces their styles , while being himself PreTs had subtles changes with sometimes more uniques clothing like Alabasta or Drum island But Post TS takes that to the other level because even tho Hancock packed 500 outfits for him He almost never wears them And instead wears whatever he saw fit The coat from the chimeras in Punk Hazard Kinemon's Dressrosa disguise WCI CacaoTown style Wano's kimono and even the Armor Wano in Particular I like how Oda shows us Luffy with the armore as a '' Haha see this overly detailed design '' well i'm glad I won't draw it weakly '' Just a tease And he insteads gives him peak Pirate attire Which is really important in this context because it's the battle that defined Luffy's rise at the top of piracy So him wearing his most Pirate outfit fits so well in contrast with the Samurais

Coat luffy deserves a whole section. Oda better bring that back

Personally, I think my gavourote part of luffy's design is his big round smile. It's very round and friendly, but also, suitably unhinged in how big it is. Kinds communicates is whole personality and directs the whole feel of the story when luffy is present based on if the smile is there.

For me Nightmare Luffy was sort of a gear 4 beta. Especially his size, hair, eye design and emphasis on power got reused a lot on the gear 4 design. Kinda bummed that he didnt get his little highlight in your otherwise very well made video :/

I heard somewhere that south american pirates wore strawhats. But I would say that luffy's design represents his journey to become a true pirate. His initial design makes him look like a farmer - the furthest thing from a pirate, but gradually becomes more piratey

about haki visuals making things homogenous: the anime does add a different color tint to people's haki, if you pay attention to it almost everytime we see new characters using haki or two different characters using it at the same time, its almost never the exact same shade. its like each armament coating is unique to the user

I'm not a creator myself, so all I can really find is that volume for videos should be between -12db and -6db, I don't know how to actually change and measure that.

I haven’t gotten to Wano yet, currently on Fishman Island Arc, but man, I adore the Gear 5 design. I don’t know if it’s the white color scheme, the divine aspect of the clouds around his shoulders or the silhouet against the moon, but whatever it is it’s my favourite Luffy design and I can’t wait to get to that part of the story.

One genius design about his gears is that it effects different parts of luffy's body, Gear 2nd is for the veins, Gear 3rd is for the bones, gear 4th is for the muscle, and gear 5th is for the breain, really is fascinating!

An underrated piece of design its the scar As someone that started with the manga, that first scene of him stabbing his face tells a lot about the character Whenever he says hes gonna do something crazy i see that scar and reminded of that first scene Hes doesn't think or care if he gets hurt and that mark is a sign of that The anime really ruined that aspect by cutting that scene

Gear 4’s definetly my favourite form, especially because you can see where Luffy took inspiration for those forms. *Bounceman: Definetly took inspiration from Enel when he went all Sumo Lightning Mode.* *Snakeman: Took inspiration from his battle with the Boa Sisters Marigold and Sandersonia. All the Snake themed attacks, the fact it’s based around countering observation Haki, etc.* As for Tank Man, I feel like many others he made the form up on the spot.

While super sayian is definitely more iconic overall (and obviously more powerful), Luffy's gears are way more interesting, because they are meaningfully different. Each gear looks unique, and serves a specific purpose, whereas the different levels of super sayian are just like the one that preceded it, except stronger and with bigger hair.
