The old i.8 85 is quite sharp as long as you are past f2.2 or more. At f8 it can be very sharp. IS is definitely an advantage with a 85mm, for portraits and fashion. It is not about low light, it is about taking out hand held mouvements. Sure if one could the RF is very good for the price, yet I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the EF 1.8 to anyone. I have made great pictures with my 85mm on my old 5DMKIII no regrets.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the EF lens does resolve better as you stop down the aperture, but still doesn’t keep up with the RF. That’s exactly my point about the IS in the lens. And if you are using an 85mm lens on full frame, the average photographer would need to be using a very slow shutter speed in order to see any motion blur from handheld shooting. It’s not about saying one lens isn’t good, I still shoot with the EF 85mm as well. But, there are areas where it’s several-decades-old design definitely doesn’t keep up with modern lenses. Again, that doesn’t mean it can’t be used. It’s all about finding what works for you and fits within your budget! So, are portraits and fashion what you mainly shoot?

Why would anyone buy an f1.8 or lower to shoot at F8? Just a geniune question.
@jseboudoir
@jseboudoir 6 ай бұрын
That's a good point to consider! How often will you need the image stabilization when hand holding, and how often will one be shooting in low light? I also appreciate that you even mentioned that at that focal length, if you're shooting at 1 to 200th of a second if not faster, will IS even be needed?

Hey Justin, I shot almost all of my latest video on the RF85 and it nailed focus bang-on throughout. No hunting etc. What was diffent? It was on the tripod. So I guess it's okay for video as long as the camera is stationary. But not ok for walkaround shooting.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s a good point. And all of the usable shots I got with the lens were after I had set up the shot, waited to get focus set and then was stationary. But as far as recommending performance like that for a video lens, it’s way too unreliable for me to say that’s a good purchase for a video shooter. But for someone like you who already has it and can use it for stationary shots, definitely

Since I've been using the RF85mm f2, it's convinced me that I'll never go back to the old EF85mm f1.8. I really like the RF's fine manual focus precision. The rendering and contrast of the RF is far superior to the EF. I don't understand why there's so much negativity about this excellent lens.

Good afternoon. You talked about the Canon 85mm f2 RF lens. I bought the same one, but I wanted to ask: the retractable lens is a little backlash both in the extended and in the original state in relation to the main body, perhaps because of the stabilizer, perhaps structurally. The backlash is approximately 0.5 mm. Is this how it should be?
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto Жыл бұрын
I’m not exactly sure what you mean as far as backlash. The extending structure of the lens might not be exactly flush with the static portions of the lens. As long as the lens is operating normally while focusing and taking images, you shouldn’t need to worry

Used EF 100 mm f2.8 L macro is about the same price as new RF 85 f2. Is that the better option since both lenses here seem kind of flawed? Im planning to sell my EF 85mm f1.8, 50 2.5 macro and possibly 135 f 2 L for more versatile alternative.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Completely depends on your usage. If dedicated macro photography is what you tend to do, definitely the EF 100mm L Macro. If you also do portraits or something where you like to have the 85mm focal length, I thought the RF 85mm f2 did great for that. And honestly, I didn’t have any issues with the RF 85mm f2 in photography. However, it can only shoot 50% magnification where the EF 100mm L Macro can shoot 1:1. I’ve actually never used the EF 100mm for portraits, but I have heard others complain that the bokeh quality at that distance is a bit too harsh. That’s definitely going to be personal preference though. What types of photography and/or videography do you typically shoot?

I'm sorry but this is not a accurate comparison, the stills AF speed between the two is not even in the same universe, the EF can focus three times in the time it takes the RF to loudly hiccup it's way to focus, even with the focus limiter set to limit to the EF's range.

@RandomGuy-qn2fr
@RandomGuy-qn2fr 2 жыл бұрын
i ran tests on both the rf 2 and the ef 1.8 and the sharpness is much much better on the ef 1.8 than the rf 2. If you compare a brick building for example the corners and edges look more rounded on the rf 2 which is completely unrealistic compared to the ef 1.8 while the ef 1.8 has sharper edges and corners on brick buildings. The reason you're seeing a color difference between the rf 2 and the ef 1.8 is because the rf 2 is color saturated. The lack of light coming in the rf 2 which made it frustrating for me to photograph buildings this morning and yesterday. I noticed the severe lack of details in the rf 2 compared to the ef 1.8 because of this. More light better images. Granted the color saturation in the rf 2 looks better for sky portraits of clouds and blue skies but at a cost of it's surroundings and clarity of objects
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Ya, I definitely did not see better sharpness from the EF lens. I consistently notice that it can’t resolve the resolution of the sensors I’m using. I didn’t test corner sharpness, because it’s not something that I find particularly useful for anything I have ever shot. Keep in mind though that one thing you might be noticing as you get into the corners with these two lenses is the difference in rendering due to rounded elements in the EF lenses and flat elements in the RF lens that allow it to get to “half-macro” focusing distances. I didn’t find the ~1/3 stop darker exposure from the RF lens to be problematic at all. Just expose the image correctly. 1/3 - 1/2 stop higher ISO is not going to make a discernible difference in image quality on modern cameras. So what kind of photography do you typically shoot?

@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
So, the noise comes from the camera sensor and not the lens. They were both taken on the R6 which is why the noise level looks the same. What you can compare here is the level of detail. Notice specifically around the eyes (the point of focus), there is much less detail with the EF 85mm than with the RF. Not to say the EF is a bad lens, but it is close to a 30 year old design and wasn’t designed to keep up with modern sensors. On a higher resolution sensor, the difference becomes more and more noticeable. Do you shoot with or looking to get one of these?
