I find the whole "what brand really is the Veyron" thing fascinating, because around that time, Ferdinand Piech got four companies under VW to make Halo-hypercar concepts; the aforementioned Bentley Hunaudieres and 18/3 chiron, as well as the Volkswagen W12, and the Audi Rosemeyer. They all seem to follow the design philosophy of the Auto Union P52 prototype, of which the drawings were supposedly rediscovered in the early 90s. It was intended as a full-bodied, roadgoing version of the Auto Union Type-D grand prix car; a 200hp, mid-engine, V16 powered monster, equally capable of flogging a Bugatti on the circuit in SWB guise, as the LWB limousine version could have sailed past a Tatra on the autobahn. The resemblance is most obvious in the Audi Rosemeyer, with its chunky bare metal body (and 16 cylinder engine), but it's possible that plans for the R8 hot-potato'd the project to either Bentley or Bugatti, and with Bentley set up as the posh loungey luxury brand, the 2-tonne slab of German engineering ended up in Bugatti's lap.

I'll be honest, the Volkswagen W12 is the cooler out of those 4 cars, which is odd considering the Volkswagen badge on it

Considering Piech’s predatory management style, its quite possible he challenged all these brands to create a car based on his guidelines and Bugatti had made the biggest impression, hence becoming the crown jewel in VAG’s portfolio. All of them are really similar (with VW W12 being the most contemporary supercar-like and futuristic, far removed from P52)

Love that the 18.3 Concept looks like the bugatti type 32. I think a problem with the modern veyron and other products aren't just a lack of passion, but a lack of history. Bugatti's gaps in production, different iterations of the company, and the dwindling awareness of the former bugatti company all contribute. Besides the grill, bugatti doesn't feel like it has a specific design language, or aesthetic. It fails on one of the most important aspects of the supercar, the emotions it stirs within you.
@helloperson6431
@helloperson6431 Жыл бұрын
Hell yeah. This was awesome. Didn't know these cars were made. I'm not a huge fan of the styling of these cars, mainly the grille which feels poorly implemented, but still had lots to like. Pure luxury and so 90s.

This channel essentially puts my ramblings to uninterested friends into an eloquent turn of phrase, I adore it. Edit: The engine in the big Benters may not have been the one that gave birth to the Veyron's W16. The scant info I can find on it seems to suggest it was a long stroked engine (sharing dimensions with the shithouse Passat W8) whereas the cylinders in the Veyron's engine is as square as Jack Ma's head.

In addition to the input on an additional dimension of this particular story, I was remiss in failing to mention how much I've enjoyed your whole series of automotive commentaries here. Outstanding stuff! Solid command of the subject matter, passionate nerdiness, creativity, and timely satire make them all both entertaining and informative. I look forward to more, as your time permits. I might even suggest a further topic, the Cizeta-Moroder V16T, which has the godfather of House music team up with an Italian American car broker/importer and the legendary Marcello Gandini to create the most over the top supercar of its era... It's quite possibly more "the most car, car" than even the EB110, it's all that, plus an extra kilo of marching powder and 4 more cylinders! One more thing, the Giugiaro responsible for all of those tantalizing prototype Bugatti's VW never built was actually Fabrizio, not his more famous father. Fabrizio did the BMW Nazca as well. Keep up the superlative work! Cheers.

I would imagine that Ettore Bugatti would be proud of what Bugatti has become, as Bugatti is often considered the best at making super fast cars, if only he was able to see the achievements of his company. But I understand videos reasoning to why modern Bugatti is a lot different from what Bugatti started as.
@R4baDader
@R4baDader Жыл бұрын
The thing that is sort of missing from the modern Bugatti brand is the lack of Motorsports pedigree. Anybody can build a top speed car, look at the guys at bonneville. But it’s something else to make a winning race car. VW could do that, they did it with the Bentley speed 8 at Le Mans and all of the GT3 wins the continental has under its belt. If they wanted to bring back Bugatti as Etorre Bugatti would want it, they needed to race, win, and beat Bentley.
@mrspandel5737
@mrspandel5737 Жыл бұрын
My theory is that VAG intended Bugatti as a car beyond the realm of even Hypercars, untouchable, unbeatable, beyond compare. The thing with racing is that you can and will fail at it. Just look at Lamborghinis Track record in Motorsport. Making the Veyron fit into what was then the GT1 category would have meant removing basically half the car. Anyway, I think that VAG deliberately avoided taking Bugatti racing precisely to preserve that image of the untouchable car. Bugatti had tons of racing experience in ye olden days, the Type 35 is one of the most successful race cars ever after all.

A family friend has a Veyron and I can’t say I agree with your statement of calling them passionless I’ve been in the car multiple times and it lives up to every bit of the pedestal that I put it on as a kid. It truly is a masterpiece of automotive engineering, and I would have to say the same about the Chiron. Made for rich guys to gloat about yes but also made for some to aspire to.

I have a toy model of the EB110 (from Bburago, a now deceased Italian toy company that made the best car toy models with full steering and such), and looking at the new Bugatti stuff... I do feel sad, considering what could have been, had Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. kept going. But alas, it's like the Lamborghini Estoque - only existing in the bright timeline, while we suffer in the darkest timeline.

Funny thing about Top Gear and Bugatti was that I recall watching them spreading word that Volkswagen had announced their intention to design and cram a 1000 horsepower engine into a car capable of doing 240+ miles an hour. They proceeded to call it madness and a joke. In fairness, the episode was in 2003 if I remember correctly, so such a claim was rightfully seen as absurd.

I don't think we missed out on much with not having the other Bugatti models released to be honest. I think they would've been overshadowed if the Veyron ever made it to production even if they did exist. It's just such a mental car that when you'd think "Bugatti" you'd think of the Veyron.

The design of these cars will always speak to me, it’s like a low poly 90s game car brought into reality which makes it extremely nostalgic to a gamer like me, while also being uniquely stylish and stately, streamlined like a true successor to 30s cars. The new ones are kind of the bland tryhard super aero that we can’t get rid off since Lamborghini showed that space ship thing with 3000 vents.

Both of the Italo-Bugatti Sedan Protoytpes actually survived, and one of them is being driven (or at least was spotted being driven in general traffic in 2019). Also VW only bought the Bugatti name, the rest was bought by "Dauer", a since defunct German sportscar TUNER, who built an EB110 "Mark 2" with improvements.

When the Type 111 was ready to be released in '96, his Grand-Daughter Elisa was hiding under the covers, and the car was named directly after her.

Great video, dank memes. I liken the McLaren F1 to an airplane - it works with the laws of physics to achieve incredible performance. The Veyron is like a helicopter - it beats the laws of physics into submission. Not to say it isn’t an incredible machine, but like you say it’s a vanity project. The EB110 is rad AF. I remember seeing that EB218 interior in a car magazine when I was a kid and thinking it was amazing :D Such subscribe, very notification bell.

I'm probably a couple of years younger than you, but the 4 door Bugatti's where playground fodder for me and my friend's. I liked the veyron but pretended not as much as my friends did, so my school time was spent looking at other Bugatti's. I finally saw one recently last year, it was ok, but I think the mesmerising factor has worn off, I looked at it for 10 seconds and it was onto the next car.
