For me, that's no matter of language and accent. That's the matter of acting. Bruno Ganz is much more convincing in this role, though it's only my opinion.

Yes not historically true, but it lends itself to suspension of disbelief, to those watching. And jeez again, those are fantastic actors portraying Hitler and Spear, It has to be the director's fault.

Both "The Bunker" (1981) and "Downfall" (2004) are films that focus on the last days of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, particularly in the Führerbunker in Berlin. However, they have different approaches, tones, and styles. "Downfall" (Der Untergang) is widely regarded as a more critically acclaimed and impactful film. It received international acclaim for its realistic portrayal, historical accuracy, and powerful performances, particularly Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Adolf Hitler. The film is known for its intense and gripping atmosphere, providing a visceral and harrowing depiction of the events in the bunker. On the other hand, "The Bunker" (1981) is also recognized for its portrayal of the same historical events, but it may not have achieved the same level of acclaim as "Downfall." Some viewers appreciate the performances in "The Bunker," but it may not be as widely praised as the later film. Ultimately, the preference for one over the other is subjective and depends on personal taste. If you are interested in a highly acclaimed and intense portrayal of Hitler's last days, "Downfall" is often considered the better film.

"The Bunker" is a television film that was released in 1981. It was directed by George Schaefer and based on the play of the same name by John Gay. The film depicts the last days of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime as they hide in an underground bunker in Berlin during the final days of World War II. Anthony Hopkins stars as Adolf Hitler, and the film explores the deteriorating mental and emotional state of the Nazi leader as the Allied forces close in on Berlin. The story also portrays the relationships and dynamics among the individuals in the bunker, including Eva Braun, Heinrich Himmler, Joseph Goebbels, and others. "The Bunker" received critical acclaim for its performances, particularly Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hitler. It provides a dramatic and intense portrayal of the historical events surrounding the fall of the Third Reich. The film is known for its exploration of the psychological aspects of the characters involved in these final days of World War II.

@JimmySmers Then read the memoirs comparatively, weather they were Nazi loyalists or not. Especially suggest the memoirs of one Albert Speer (very self serving and selective compilation). It is a pity that Speer's "viewpoint" seemed to get quite a weight in the movie Downfall. And just to add to that comparison, then the technical history book "The Rocket and the Reich: Peenemünde and the Coming of the Ballistic Missile Era" by Neufeld is a sobering read and therefor a must.

I agree that Downfall is much much better overall. It's still marvellous to see Anthony Hopkins playing that role back in 1981. The only thing that bothers me in Downfall is that the accounts of Hanna Reitch were not included in Downfall, but she and Greim had a more sombre perspective of reality entering the bunker and seeing how detached the individuals there were from reality, then what is made out in the film Downfall, where she is presented like a Führer cheerleader.
