I went to a dealership. My wife's car broke down for good. I took off work to buy her another car and needed to get this done today. The car was 15k I had 6k to put down. I arrived to the dealership pretty early. They took all day long with papers that I started to read but then kept signing because hey I told the guy I wanted to put down 6k towards the purchase of the car. They use exhaustion tactics like this and knew I had to get this car purchased today otherwise one of us could lose our jobs. Then when I left they had somehow absorbed the 6k in various programs and bs and I owed the full amount for the car they were selling it for. I was naive and didn't know better. The day before that trip to the dealership we went to a different one and literally made me wait "figuring the math" for hours and every time it was way more money than what we agreed upon. My son needed a change we were frustrated because they kept and I finally just walked out. Long story short, go to your own bank and get a loan pre approved with the terms you want, then the dealership can't change the price or conditions on you

I can't figure out how she didn't know how much the car was costing. If the money was from a loan she got approved from her credit union, then the bank/credit union cuts a check for the amount you are borrowing and you see that check. If you get financing through the dealership, you sign things that show the final purchase price at the bottom of an itemized list---how do you not notice that you are borrowing $38K, not $22K? I wonder if she fell for the whole "how much do you want your monthly payment to be?" If that was the case, and she said something like "I don't want to pay more than $325 a month" then I can envision how they sent her out the door, satisfied that her payment was only $322 a month---and she didn't put that together somehow with the final, true purchase price.

Do people not realize that the car salesman has nothing to do with the “Finance Manager”. The Finance manger is the reason why you are in debt, he is like the final boss and prints out the paperwork. For example, the salesman gave you the $25,000 for sale price but once you go into the finance office you sign a $32,000 for sale price. Car salesman are the least of your problems, the bank only talks to the finance manager at the end of the day.

It is very easy for the "advertised price" to increase 5-10,000 with fees and add ons. Tax and reg fees including "doc" fees are mostly legit but car prep, coatings, extra packages, junk warranties etc are mostly not. It is a racket and dealers are struggling so you will see more of this nonsense. That said, she should read the final paperwork and challenge most of it. She didn't and she is on the hook for what she signed for, it is in writing. Could probably get the warranty refunded. And this is all pending my mechanic looking the car over, us driving it, etc. We go look at the car, everything is good, I go inside to sign the paper and leave with the car. Everything looked good (I read the paperwork word for word) except they tried to sneak a $500 fee in. I said NOPE, and got up to leave. They said we HAVE to charge you this doc fee. I bought a used car several years ago at a Ford dealership. I wasn't going to buy a car that day, but I wanted to look at the sizes of their line up of cars. You can't tell that from a photo. We looked at several cars and then I asked him if he had any with leather seats. He had one and I sat in the car and it just felt right. It had low mileage which was important to me. I decided to buy it. It was a Ford Escape and had every bell and whistle on it. I paid $25,000. It was just what I wanted and was in my budget. They gave me a Car Fax and of course it didn't have a price on it. I blew it off. A few days later Car Fax sent me another Car Fax for the car and it was $7,000 less than I paid for it!!!! I growled and then laughed because I felt stupid and I should have done more homework. But in the end, I just accepted my error as a lesson in life. I still like the car years later. My lessons: 1) Do more homework on what cars are selling for. Don't be a chump. 2) Even if it takes you a half hour, read the entire contract. I hate legalese with a passion, but it is important. 3) I did pay with cash, so I'm grateful I didn't pay additional interest on the whole deal. lol!

Yes! When my husband was ready to buy an SUV, he chose the model based on price, and we bought it used. He tracked the price trends (dealer and private sale) for several months while he saved up the cash. On buy day, we looked at several cars (dealer and private). We found one at a Mercedes dealer, a clean trade-in with low mileage. My husband knew how much the car was selling for, and he knew how much we were willing to pay for it. Because we were paying cash (they tried to get us to finance and we declined), and had the afternoon free, my husband spent a couple of hours in negotiation and got our SUV at the top end of what he was willing to pay. I sold cars for 20+ years. On average, id be speaking to 10 or so people a day about purchasing a car. A mix up in numbers can happen. Its VERY rare, but can happen. The crazy part though, is that in my 20 plus years experience. I would estimate 1 out of 20 people wont read a single number on a contract and just sign.

While a lot of people will want to dump on you I can relate. 1.) unlike most things you buy the price on the car is NOT the price of the car, and 2.) when it comes to money there are no friends. I found this out when I bought a car at a dealership from a “friend”. I ended up paying the price on the window sticker and having everyone tell me I paid too much. After that experience I went to the library (1970’s) and found a book on how to buy a car. It covered the whole process from the price, add-on’s, inspecting the car, financing, and the power of the word “NO”. Read everything believe nothing. If it is not in writing it does not exists.

I also found errors on the HUD-1 statement and she would call the broker and he would fax over the corrections. She didn't seem bothered but she did say most people just sign everything. Crazy. They are too excited to get those keys to the house. When presented a docement requiring your signature, remember RUST: Read, Understand, Sign, and I think the T used to stand for triplicate, which was a copy prior to copy machines. You can change it to RUSC where the C stands for copy. Make sure you get a copy of the document.

We just watched this for the second time. We noted something important this time. When asked what her loan amount was, she stated it was $38,000. Before she signs anything with the dealership, she had to secure this loan first. She was aware, 1. What the price of the car was to ask for a loan amount, 2. And what the total loan amount would be. So she lied to John and George making it appear that AFTER the fact, she learned of the price by looking at her loan papers. I think she learned she couldn’t afford the car and was trying someway to return it.

My wife had an old Chevy Caviliare that got great gas mileage.. We went to trade it in . We were offered 700. We drove it another 2 years. This time offered 500 . I said to the dealer in Texas , who worked part time as a car salesman and full-time as a rancher, that's 200 less. He thought I was complaining . I said we had the car for 2 years longer, she drove it another 7,000 miles . So 100 a year for the use of that car. It's the cheapest transportation we ever had. We sold it to a neighbor for 700.. I did pay cash for a new Chevy S10 Blazer. Her dad worked for GM.. We got the " true" employee discount price.. The small town car dealership never did an employee plan before . We got a huge discount off the sticker price . About 1/3 off.. Her dad got ripped off for decades from the local GM dealer in Michigan. I wonder how many GM employees in Michigan pay the inflated price thinking they were getting the true employee discount price? Of course this was 32 years ago and now cars cost the same price as a house! The price of houses in rural Midwestern small towns anyway. .

We just got a new vehicle (certified used w/ warranty) and we got one price by the end, the price was totally inflated. It was a full day experience so it was just searchers fatigue. I took a few hours the next day to take a better review of the contract. Right to Rescind is 3 days. Everything checked out except the features that sounded like they were included in the sales price were add-ons (warranties and overpriced care packages) documented as "other charges" to the amount of $5K over the sales price. For full reimbursement, you have to cancel within 30-60 days. Best believe I started a paper trail immediately and had the dealer cancel all the unneeded add-ons. Took a month but it was taken off the principal. Payment is the same but it'll be paid off sooner along with additional payments. Had it not turned out that way, I wouldn't be a victim. I agreed to the terms of that contract.
