"Another Song"
The moon that rose now descended,
And the love one shared now had ended,
And soon the day would come.
And when the day had come, the light that fell at dawn was cold--
the warmth of you had gone,
A taste of loneliness cut through the earliness and oh,
the wind sang of you, softly they said,
All my fav'rite dreams were dead,
Leaving a cloud of sadness in my head
And though I'm buried in a sad song of the morning wind,
I know the day would bring another song for me to sing,
But when the day had come. the light that fell at dawn was cold--
the warmth of you was gone.

This is right in the place where Richard and Karen were getting signed and still had their jazz/rock/folk band sensibilities intact. If you watch their first TV appearance in ‘67 you can hear a lot of genre jumping and clever references to classical, jazz, pop, and rock riffs. Pieces like this would be in their live concert performances. As their softer pop group identity began to gel (with this album) less of this was heard. But… this is actually a pure pre-signed Carpenters sound.

Thank you so much for providing your reaction to this and other songs from the Carpenters. We appreciate your comments and its obvious you have become a fan of their work. Karen's voice was so beautiful -- especially in the lower range. I will never get tired of listening to their music.

That was so unexpected. I am not sure I enjoyed it as a favorite. But it reminded me that these folks are artists and their fan base is very wide. Taking chances and experimenting with arrangements and melody is another part of how talented they are.

Oooooh! Yes!!! I sooooo love hearing Karen just rip through her drumming, changing it up three different times as if it's three different songs. Outstanding song. Yay, Richard! They used to perform this as their original 6-member band, SPECTRUM. I just love this song, and it's about my favorite. This was the true original sound of "Carpenters". So unique, and so freaking talented - both of them. Gary Sims, Danny Woodhams, and lyrist John Bettis were members of SPECTRUM as well. Woooohoooo! Yeah, baby! Go Karen, circling around her drumkit at the end like that. Mmmmhmmm!

Thanks for reacting to this, Jaybriel. There's nothing else quite like "Another Song" in the Carpenters' catalog. It was one of a number of creative cul-de-sacs that allowed them to show off their talents. This song received a little notice in The Guardian last year, as its pop and rock critic Alexis Petridis ranked it among the Carpenters' 20 greatest songs. (It placed at #19, just ahead of "Road Ode.")

I think this is Richard getting back (not that he ever left) his Richard Carpenter Trio/Spectrum roots. Heavy on the jazz. It's definitely a showpiece of the album, even through it's not to everyone's taste. Big, big, big fan.

Hi Jaybriel, first time I’m seeing the new haircut. You were doing so much Carpenters, I kinda liked the long hair vibe. LOL. I know you don’t react as much anymore, sadz. But I did some research and did find that Karen drummed this song. The writer JMPatrick also listed other Karen drumming parts. I’ll paste that here. Found this snippet on Wiki: "According to her brother, Carpenter always considered herself a "drummer who sang." Despite this, she was not often featured as a drummer on the Carpenters' albums. She was, however, the only drummer on the albums Ticket to Ride and Now & Then (except for one song) and on the songs "Mr. Guder", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Love is Surrender", "Bacharach/David Medley", the piano instrumental "Flat Baroque" (highlighting her use of brushes), "Happy", "Another Song" and "Please Mr. Postman." The role of drummer in the Carpenters entourage was mainly taken over by Hal Blaine as she went from being behind the drum set to the front of the stage." In concerts it was mostly Cubby O’Brien and that dude with the giant mop of hair on his head. I need to find his name. Cubby, of course on his second Karen, the first from his time on the OG Mickey Mouse Club from the 1950’s.

This song is good! I love the music on the early Carpenters albums. Under appreciated tracks from Close to You: Reason to Believe, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, Crescent Noon, I Kept On Loving You. I think Karen is playing drums on this album, but might be additional from Hal Blaine. The music here is very “Wrecking Crew”. And yes Carpenters could go very progressive when they felt like it, Culminating in Calling Occupants, their masterpiece.

Yes, the drummer here is all Karen. When they were first starting out Karen was only 16 when Richard put together the original group, SPECTRUM. Three of the members of that band later became part of "Carpenters". John Bettis, the excellent lyricist in his own right, was part of SPECTRUM, too. Anyhoo. That is all Karen on the drums. She was playing like this at 16 years old. Excellent drummer. 😉

@@jaybrielakoi7747 she was a big star... she had two #1 hits on the billboards charts and 14 of her songs were top ten hits. I would say "Blue Bayou" is her signature song. An interesting bit of trivia about Linda, her first hit song was when she was the lead singer of a band called The Stone Poneys, the song was called "Different Drum". Soon after recording that hit song, she left the band and started her solo career. She assembled her own group of relatively unknown local musicians and friends from the LA area. Her band was quite talented. They recorded with her on her first solo album and with her for a few live shows. The band then informed her that they loved working with her, but they wanted to start their own band. Linda wished them good luck and told them they were great and she was sure they would be a big success. That band became the Eagles!

Jay, I have to apologize for writing you off in the past just because you didnt necessarily agree that KC was the best female vocalist EVER. Subsequently, you consistently reacted to many of her songs, including those less known. Got to give you credit for your objective opinions (although you do prefer Karen;s voice to a myriad of others-good for you !) You have earned my respect because you listen to so many of all her recordings and your comments reflect in-depth knowledge of of arranging, singing style, etc.. Tidbit: Did you know that ALL of KC's female harmony parts are her singing as well ? Keep it up. You are one of THE best reactors. helo
