My grandmother was born in Appalachia VA in 1900. She ordered a Carter Family songbook and gave up hope of it arriving when she heard Sarah and AP split. She got it anyway. I saw it as a child and wonder where it is now (circa 1933 or so print). Sigh. Such nostalgia.

While Maybelle and Sara often get all the exposure, A.P. Carter really hunted out and wrote the songs that became the basis for the genre. No doubt of the brilliance of Maybelle's guitar pickings which I truly love. I just want to ensure that A.P. gets the musicological recognition that he really deserved. Just the Wabash Cannonball alone gives him credit but that is just one of 100s.

A.P. Carter must've had some tenacity and determination. I wonder *how* he was able to communicate the songs he found to Sara and Maybelle and others. It's one thing to record lyrics, but before any tape or digital recorders recounting a tune was a neat accomplishment. Perhaps A.P. would tell Sara and Maybelle the lyrics and then they'd recognize the tune he was talking about but at some point, the tunes had to be new to Sara and Maybelle too !

Regardless of where you live in the world, the Carter family has always surfaced with their music on the radio. The Carter music though was the beginning of country music, completely un-know but the beginning of the working man's music. The very early carter music demonstrates what can be done with early music instruments with song.
