What is the Catholic view of grace? Is it really that different from the Protestants? Does the Catholic Church teach that we must work to earn salvation? Join Keith Nester as he unpacks this idea.

If I tell my wife, "I love you", but my actions don't show it, I won't be married long. My works follow what is in my heart. Jesus said “if you love me, you will obey me. Our Father repeats this point through James…” faith without works is dead”. We see then that faith and works are 2 sides of a coin. It is clear though that faith is heads(1st) and works is tails(2nd). Obedience follows love, works follows faith, and actions follow what is in our hearts. We are justified…made right before God by faith (believing,trusting,leaning on) and if we truly love Him… our actions… even though their weak…complete the circle. James 2-“Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.”

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Jesus said, "Ask and you shall receive," which is my own testimony. That is, raised by an atheist, I heard the gospel for the first time at age 17 through a Catholic movie about Jesus. Shortly thereafter, I walked onto the lawn of a church on night, looked up at the steeple, and prayed my first prayer, "Is there Jesus? I would like to meet Him!" When I met Christ, all heaven filled my soul and it felt like my heart was made out of gold. I have been great friends with Christ ever since. Conversely, Catholics teach that baptism and communion are necessary for salvation - all with no assurance of salvation. That said, in 45 years, I have not had even one second of doubt that I know the Lord and am bound for heaven - not even for a second. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)." Yet, Catholics teach, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord, is baptized, and partakes of communion might be saved." Which is the true gospel? Remember, Paul wrote that whoever preaches a different gospel should be accursed. Christ died on a Cross so that, just by asking, we can know God. Adding any other condition to being saved is to pollute the pure beauty of the gospel. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Council of Trent CANON I.-If any one saith, that man may be justified before God by his own works, whether done through the teaching of human nature, or that of the law, without the grace of God through Jesus Christ; let him be anathema
@patriot524
@patriot524 4 жыл бұрын
Council of Trent, Session VI, Chapter VIII "we are therefore said to be justified freely, because that none of those things which precede justification-whether faith or works-merit the grace itself of justification. For, if it be a grace, it is not now by works, otherwise, as the same Apostle says, grace is no more grace."

CANON 9 - "If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema." CANON 12 - " "If any one shall say that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in the divine mercy pardoning sins for Christ's sake, or that it is that confidence alone by which we are justified...let him be accursed"." CANON 24: "If any one saith, that the justice received is not preserved and also increased before God through good works; but that the said works are merely the fruits and signs of Justification obtained, but not a cause of the increase thereof; let him be anathema." So if it is not by works, Trent says it is not by faith. So, when it says "movement by his own will" that would seem to require a work. Therefore, Trent contradicts itself. And if it is not by faith, and it is not by works, then there must be some mix of faith and works. So, again Trent says it is faith and works and then says that it is not faith and it is not works. There, once again, Trent contradicts itself. QED. Trent is a mess of theological contradictions.

The mass for example. It's a blessing being called to Mass. Unfortunately many Catholics do not understand what the Mass is all about. I was one of them, until God revealed it to me slowly, many receive the same revelation but they refuse to accept it. People don't know how lucky they are. I live in a country where there are not many Catholic churches that we can go, If I could I'd go every single day. Not because I have to, but out of LOVE for Jesus, to worship Him, the Mass is ALL about Him.

Dominic Ward Just an FYI... that poll included people who “self-identified” as Catholic, but do not practice the faith at all or are C&E Catholics. Among the Catholics that attend mass weekly, this number of believers goes from 30% to 65%. Also, the sample number was extremely low (less than 2000 people samples) and unfortunately, many Catholics these days are not well catechized. I love receiving Jesus in the Eucharist and would love to attend mass daily, but am not very close to a Catholic Church. I have, however, been known to attend both Saturday vigil and Sunday masses... weird, but hey! I love it! 🥰

Hi. Will you consider that it is true: once saved, always saved? Before you answer, just know that Jesus said that we must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. Have you been born again? Jesus said that those who believe on Him will have rivers of living waters. Yet, the word 'believe' has a deeper meaning than praying a sinner's prayer. It involves a personal friendship, an infilling of the Holy Spirit. Do you have those rivers of living water? If not, then you will not enter heaven - those are Christ's words, not mine! Paul said that the Holy Spirit will bear witness with your spirit that you are saved (Romans 8.16). Do you have that assurance of your salvation from the Holy Spirit? The one make it or break it for heaven is to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to know Christ personally. Of course, if you know Christ, you will bear much fruit and endure to the end. It is written, "This is eternal life, that you know God and Jesus Christ Whom He has sent." Go back and read that verse. If you know Christ, you HAVE eternal life in Him. The Aposlte Paul put it like this, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)." That is, by asking, you can be filled with the Holy Spirit, born again! Do you know Christ? Amen Pastor Keith, When I was an Evangelical one of the most dangerous ways of thinking I got into was thinking well I’m Saved I can do whatever I want. I have a license to sin. I went to a Church that preached “Once Saved Always Saved”. Our state of Grace is continuous. Let’s say someone says the Sinners Prayer repents then 6 months later becomes let’s say a “Satanist” and for the rest of that persons life that person lives that way. Is that person saved cause that person said a prayer at a certain point of time. God’s Grace is continuous but a gift from God but at anytime you can refuse that gift.

@@taylorrowe2002 I urge you to be very careful, as, from what you wrote, I am concerned about your spiritual state. May I ask, how do you know you are saved? Referring to the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, “Whoever believes in Me shall have rivers of living water bubbling up inside of him (John 7.38).” Do you have that? It is no time to be prideful or uncertain. The contrapositive of John 7.38 is that, if you do not have rivers of living water, then you do not believe in Christ and you are not saved. Since you do not have assurance of your salvation, it makes me concerned if you are saved at all. Only the Holy Spirit knows, but your theology is dangerous in that a person who is genuinely seated in the heavenlies with Christ has the Holy Spirit bear witness with their spirit that they are a child of God (Romans 8.16). Conversely, Judas betrayed Jesus. He never was a believer in Christ. In fact, Jesus called him a ‘devil’ - even before Judas betrayed the Lord. True believers in Christ, though they may stumble, endure to the end. If they do not, they were never saved! Moreover, to demonstrate my absolute assurance of my salvation, I have a riddle. Both statements are true: I have not doubted my salvation for even one second in the past 46 years I doubted my salvation about 40 years ago. How are both statements true? The answer begins with my over-the-top abusive father who, about 40 years ago, told me, “Not even God could love you!” I thought, “Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Yet, before I could even finish that thought, the Holy Spirit, Who is like rivers of living water, poured over me, assuring me of the love and grace of God in my life. That is how I have not doubted for even one second, yet I have doubted my salvation! God is so good! Remember, the one criteria, the ‘make it or break it’ of eternity is not whether you have ‘accepted the Lord.’ It is whether or not you know Him, whether or not you have the Holy Spirit, that you are born again. Most so-called ‘Christians’ are not born again. Only a few will make it to heaven - only a few of the professing ‘Christians’. Make sure you are one of the few. If you do not have rivers of living water (an absolutely perfect metaphor for what it is like to fellowship with the Holy Spirit), ask and you shall receive! Yet, ask in full confidence, as the double-minded man will not receive a thing from the Lord. Christ died on a Cross so that we may know Him. Do you know Him? Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

David Ortiz Protestants say Mary could not have been conceived without sin or be sinless because she “had to be saved”. The Angel came to her saying “Hail Full of Grace”. If something (or someone in this case) is “full” of something, is there room for anything else? No.. if there was room for anything else or there actually was anything else, that thing or person would not be full of only one thing. If Mary is “Full of Grace”, then there is no room for sin of any kind, either original sin or otherwise. Therefore, since the Jesus had not died and risen again, nor baptism established to forgive or wash away ALL sins, she MUST HAVE BEEN CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN! Also, since God is outside of time and space, God could easily “save Mary through Jesus’ sacrifice” before it happened. Bottom line... because the Angel greeted her as “full of grace” we can say she was conceived without sin. What do you think of this?

What I find is interesting anytime the Bible speaks about judgement and more specifically condemnation its always because of things that were done or NOT done.. So while the Bible doesn't say that faith can be earned by works it certainly shows that the Bible and God himself believe that our works are very important to our Salvation so that's the question I ask. Least of my brothers....Lord when did we not clothe you? Hmmm

Prayer for the Restoration of the Traditional Latin Mass: O Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest and Immaculate Lamb of God, slain for us and for many on the altar of Calvary, and continually offered to Thy Heavenly Father in the clean oblation of Thy Eucharistic Sacrifice: Grant, we beseech Thee, through the merits and prayers of Thy saints Gregory the Great, Thomas Aquinas and Pius the V, that the Holy Roman and Apostolic Mass, ratified, expounded and perpetuated by them respectively, may be rightly restored to the altars of Thy Church throughout the world; that once again this most awesome, majestic and perennial rite may offer infinite worship and homage to the Most Blessed Trinity; the fullest fruits and consolation and spiritual nourishment to the faithful; an impregnable defence and counterbalance against the rising tide of evil; and a sure termination of the anguish, fear, doubts, and profanations occasioned by its unsanctioned abandonment and replacement. O Holy Saints of the centuries, who sanctified and nourished your souls with the perennial Roman Mass, and Holy Martyrs who shed your blood for it, grant, we pray in desperation, that we will no longer be bereft of it, and that we will, as you, commit ourselves to the Mass at all costs and to the last breath of our lives. O Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of the Immaculate Eucharistic Victim, pray for us that we may bravely, prudently, diligently, and with sound doctrine and means pursue the rectification of the present encroachment on the Eucharist Sacrifice, and secure with thy powerful maternal aid the restoration of our Roman Catholic Mass and the Reign and Order of the Kingship of Jesus Christ thy son. Amen

We don't need to "restore" the Latin form. The "Traditional Latin Mass" (aka the Extraordinary Form) is still practiced, if a priest desires. It's just not required and the New Order of the Mass is equally the celebration and offering of the Sacrifice. After all, the Traditional Latin Mass was once a "New Order" of the Mass. When it came on the scene, before that time, the Greek language was what the Christians were mostly using in celebrating the Mass.

@@AmericanBerean LOL. Yes, the Latin Mass was new at one time. It was mostly in its present form under Pope Gregory the Great in the 500s. The Council of Trent made some further "standardization" by eliminating certain rites. So we were on-track until the 1960s. That is a pretty good run.

@@AmericanBerean The liturgy of the Tridentine mass was drastically altered by the designers of the Novus Ordo Missi who were mostly Protestant theologians. One Canadian priest who assisted those non Catholic theologians is on record confessing his involvement in the desecration of the Holy Mass,; and he recants his actions. Also, the Rites of Ordination for the clergy were changed so much that it is unclear whether a priest can absolve sins. Doubt is the trademark of the wicked. And the wicked cunningly robbed Catholics of their mass. And we want it back.

A wise king once asked a profound question to his very learned scientific men. How is it that a dead fish weighs less than a living one? The scholar's discussed the question and wrote long articles to win the favor of the king but they didn't come to a satisfactory conclusion. Finally it occurred to one of the scientists to test whether the dead fish does weigh less than the living one. He discovered the answer to the joke/lie. There wasn't a difference in the two. They weighed the same. People act the same way when it comes to the oldest Christian Church in the world.

A very good presentation of the basic beliefs common to all Christians. The interesting or differing part may be the definition of 2 types of grace. If "sanctifying" grace truly is the point of salvation, then aren't the works afterward the reflection of the Holy Spirit living within you? And if the Holy Spirit is alive in you from that definitive point in time, and you are truly saved, where does the concept of purgatory arise? Is a Lutheran, I can't reconcile the idea of being half saved.

If I have faith and have been baptized, I'll be saved. If my works don't merit going straight to heaven, though, I have to go through the fires of purgatory(which are a thing, not a place) that'll cleanse me before I enter heaven. If I keep the sacraments and I have faith and have been baptized, then you get a go straight to heaven pass. You dont have to be cleansed. That's the easiest way I have to put it. From my simple layman understanding.

So, if I DO a bad thing, then I am sinning ,so I am DOING something that separates me from God’s GRACE. BUT if I DO SOMETHING which unites me to God (help the poor), then I am DOING something that doesn’t merit me Grace, but because I have received that Grace before hand and have acted upon it. So we DO have to DO works, but not because with that work I am “earning” my salvation but because I am “enduring” (Mt. 24:13) on the Grace received. Rev. 20:12 “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were JUDGED out of those things which were written in the books, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS.” We either fell unto temptation and sinned or because of God’s grace we did the right thing. God Bless! ‭

Jesus, in revealing to us, upturns the human thinking trapped in legalism, where we think our relationship with God is written in some contract and we have to comply with its terms. God instead asks us to try to live up to what he wants, but looks more at what our intentions are as we are trying. Are my intentions at least rooted in God's love and my intentions pure? Since I'm always trying and my human-ness leads to frequent failures, I find I need God to work this way. Thanks Keith, for bringing this into focus.

Too many times these things degenerate into trying to convert people, which cannot be done without the Holy Spirit anyway. So, here goes..... Hi. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. [Your welcome.] Will you consider that it is true: once saved, always saved? [No. Free will kinda kills that one. And don't say if one ends up not saved after all thought he was, then he was never saved to begin with. Circular logic.] Before you answer, just know that Jesus said that we must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. Have you been born again? [Yes. All Catholics are born again and always have been. First in Baptism, again in Chrismation.] Jesus said that those who believe on Him will have rivers of living waters. Yet, the word 'believe' has a deeper meaning than praying a sinner's prayer. It involves a personal friendship, an infilling of the Holy Spirit. Do you have those rivers of living water? [ The first luminous mystery we have is Jesus' baptism in the Jordan. Catholics have always had the Holy Spirit. The first Church founded by Jesus established all YOU believe in, plus more which you omit.] If not, then you will not enter heaven - those are Christ's words, not mine! Paul said that the Holy Spirit will bear witness with your spirit that you are saved (Romans 8.16). Do you have that assurance of your salvation from the Holy Spirit? [I am well ensconced with the Church, the Trinity, and -get this one-intercessory prayer with/from Mary and the Communion of Saints.] The one make it or break it for heaven is to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to know Christ personally. Jesus Christ is the light of the world. [And? I also suggest you drop the sola scripture heresy and look at the works and traditions in the 400 years before the Catholic Church put together the Bible. To be deep in Church history is to be Catholic. This, from a former protestant. Love it all.] [Seriously, opt for the true sacraments, which bring God's grace directly to you; eat the flesh and blood directly in the Eucharist. Any Christian organization without these is really a religio-socio-biblio social club, an incomplete theology. I have all these, and invite you to consider these through mere curiosity.] God bless!

@@garyworth6046 Hi Gary. Since you said that you would respond only once, I am not sure how to respond to your post. That said, I would like to urge you to continue to discuss the matter until there is agreement, as we both (presumably) will ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. This is not trivial conversation, but of how to acheive heaven! In fact, the loser of the discussion winds up in eternal hell. As Paul wrote, "Whoever preaches a different gospel should be accursed." In all love and respect, what kind of a hard-hearted soul would know the way to eternal life, but if their listener does not get it the first time, they will move on? Do you believe that I am in grave danger of facing God's wrath on judgment day? And your answer is, "ho hum"?? Have you no compassion, nor love for people? Christ can fill you with love! Since you may not respond, I will not go into depth, but provide just one point. Paul wrote, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)." Paul said that even if he, Paul, preaches a different gospel, he should be accursed. Hence, is it true that whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved? Yet, unless the Lord has mercy on you, you won't be honest! You will spin some story about how your are right, but you won't look at Romans 10.13. You have a different gospel. You cannot say that I did not warn you! You are perverting the purity of the gospel. I hope to see you in heaven. May God scare the hell out of you! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

When people say to go by His Word alone do they not understand that printed copies of the New Testament were not available to people like they are today, and if they were able to obtain a copy in their own language most people did not know how to read. There seems to be a great level of ignorance in modern men to not take into account that people didn’t always live like we do now.

Faith and Charity are both from God's grace alone. The rejection of grace is called sin. The wages of sin is death. You cannot reject grace and still be saved. Paul said that if he had enough faith to move mountains but did not love. His faith was of no avail. Paul was saying that if he did not accept true charity towards others through God's grace, then his faith was of no use. We are saved by God's grace alone by faith working through love as noted in Galations 5:6. Which means Faith Alone without Charity falls short of the Gospel.

Been wanting to make a video like this. I get accused of this works based salvation all the time. Protestants say you don’t need to do anything but when pressed they will agree that you should live your life trying not to sin as a result of your salvation. Catholics say that we are saved through the Grace of our Lord through Baptism, the Holy Spirit, Jesús’ sacrifice, Eucharist and more because these are all in the Bible and if we want to stay in that grace we must try not to sin. So both believe it His Grace that saves. Both believe we should try not to sin. There is no disagreement here. But once saved always saved is a lie and a terrible way to teach people how to Love God with all your heart, mind soul and strength.

Before Jesus, in the Old Testament, the Israelites had to go to the priest confess their sins and the priest would offer animal sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins. In the New Testament, Jesus did sway with the old and established a new covenant which still involved confessing our sins, and the sacrifice of NOT animals, but his body and blood the Eucharist. These things are ACTIONS and Jesus said to do these in memory of him and commanded his disciples to go and forgive sins. This is all about Grace and Actions! 💓

Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:31-46‬ ‭NABRE‬‬

Brother Keith, I swear God lead me to your posts so I could be reproofed/rebuked on my opinions toward Catholicism. I get exactly what you mean. I've dived into Reformation stuff and found that the 'die hards' sound exactly the same on both fronts. Seriously, I'm no theologian but I reckon Luther's beef was more focussed on the corruption at the time. I would go so far as to say he had no interest in starting a split inasmuch as he wanted reform within the Catholic church because of indulgences. I don't need to remind you of Simon in the book of acts, and what happened when he tried to buy the Holy Spirit off Peter (digression halt). If only this, if only that...... I want to come home to Christ's church, His people but I don't know where to start. I'm with the Salvos at the moment, primarily because of Celebrate Recovery (substance abuser) I'm hooked on the Methadone programme and I'm a remarried divorcee. Do you think that there's grace enough for me to join the church, the one true Apostolic Catholic church? Or am I just looking for another Dopamine fix, it's hard to discern, I don't trust my 'old man' he's very adept at deception. Nonetheless, I have been earnestly praying that God may find it in His mercy to let me meet the real biblical Jesus. I'm stuck in a rut.

I really appreciated your video. I think as you mentioned there are many misconceptions taking place between Catholics and Protestants. I did notice a couple of things which I had questions about. You mentioned repentance a few times. In the Greek the word means changing of mind. Do you think a simple changing of the mind is different than confession and prayer? I would believe that changing of ones mind toward what Christ has done results in life transformation and it is worked out by experiencing Gods love justice and righteousness totally having been met in His work at the cross. Do you think it’s more about what we need to do to make ourselves right with God or is it more of a changing from the inside out? I also curious about what you were taking about concerning Actual Grace and sanctifying Grace. I believe Grace by definition is: unmerited favor. It is undeserving sinners not receiving their due punishment but the gift of righteousness while our sins were imputed to Jesus and He bore the wrath of God. I would be curious to understand what you think Paul is saying in Galatians about the Law and the church at Galatia returning to doing things to maintain their right standing before God? Do we need to maintain a right standing before God by praying confessing sin and taking the sacrament and if so what was Jesus saying on the cross when He said finished? I really loved your video and just wanted to hear more man. Appreciate you and your Jesus centered message!

For Catholics we lost sanctyfing grace, but it cannbe recovered through the sacraments. For protestants, nature got totally corrupted and free will destroyed. That is the “root” cause, and unless we address it, we will keep talking past each other. God bless

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Revelation 20-12-13. We do the works of faith which is the word of God and pray to God for His grace.
