There is a unique cemetery at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe and Meadowlark Ranch in the north San Diego County city of San Marcos. Meadowlark Pioneer Cemetery is located under the median in the middle of Rancho Santa Fe Road. The cemetery, which was in use from 1894-1908, includes inhabitants with ties to early California history. When the city wanted to expand the road, the family of one the people buried there filed suit, and a compromise was reached where the road would go around the small cemetery. The cemetery today includes a memorial in the median, that is almost invisible to traffic, and a monument on the side of the road.

Here in Virginia it is simply illegal to move or build over a cemetery. Thus there are cemeteries in some unusual locations, including in the parking lots of both the Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens amusement parks and on the compounds of several federal installations.

I used to work in the industrial park right there. Pretty cool. There are also a few historical sites in the Elfin Forest and around Questhaven road. Like the old Elfin Forest campground. All facilities are long gone but there are still concrete foundations and a few trailer power poles still there. I haven't been able to find any pictures of the campground while it was in operation, but, I do know that it was a very popular spot until 1976 when heavy rains caused the creek to flood and pretty much wiped out the campground. There is some cool stuff in the Elfin Forest. The old jail by Harmony Grove is pretty cool too.

I drive by this area at least once a week and even lived down the street from here for a few years and although I did notice the stone monument, I’ve never noticed the floor mark in between the driving lanes and probably would never have even known it was there until this video was recommended to me. There are also preserved stagecoach buildings close to here, one down the street from here hidden away in a meadow surrounded by industrial buildings, and then another one at stagecoach park. Those two buildings are also an impressive relic of time, makes you wonder what those hills would have looked like unscathed all those years ago.

The cemetery for Mission San Luis Rey is right on the side of the 76 at Rancho De Oro. However, the most absurd cemetery location I have ever seen is the cemetery in Aiea, HI that is INSIDE a cloverleaf ramp. The freeway was driven directly through the old town, and the cemetery is all that was saved.

I too was raised in San Marcos, the area has changes so much. There was one stoplight in the city when I was a child (in front of Palomar College). Some people may remember that not far from this cemetery was deadman's curve. That whole area was part of Leo Carrillo's Rancho. Many people may remember prior to the 90s things like the sounds of races going on at Carlsbad raceway or the early morning smells of the dairies and chicken ranches. I miss the wildlife. I miss hearing frogs, seeing bats every evening and when was the last time someone saw a meadowlark or a redwing blackbird?
@johnlafever3162
@johnlafever3162 3 жыл бұрын
@@tinymcgoo1195 what do you consider “not far?” Deadman’s curve is on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles and was memorialized in the hit song "Dead Man's Curve" by Jan and Dean. The song's lyrics clearly place the location of the "Dead Man's Curve" accident at the curve on westbound Sunset Boulevard just west of Doheny Drive in West Hollywood. More Deadman’s curve trivia, voice actor Mel Blanc was severely injured while driving on Deadman’s Curve in 1961, and later sued the City of Los Angeles, prompting a reconstruction of the road.

WOW! I thought I knew everything about my home town! Graduated from SMHS in '85... had no idea about this! I live in Murrieta now but travel RSF Rd. A LOT because family still live out there. I love that the family fought to keep the history alive and I hope someone will do the same with the pink house sitting in the open field of Via Vera Cruz / Discovery St. That place is being torn up now to create more lanes and to build a bridge so we can drive over the road when it floods out each rain season. I wish developers would leave SM alone! We don't need any more traffic and certainly don't need every bit of history destroyed.

I think calling this a cemetery is a bit generous. I remember driving past the graves on my way to work around 1980. I think there were two of them. It was in disrepair. They had a tree branch fence surrounding them. Then all of a sudden one day it was cleaned up and some fresh paint too I believe. I figured at that time the city must be wanting to widen the road. There had to be a reason for all of the sprucing. Glad to see a compromise was made.

We have a cemetery in Spring, TX directly next to interstate 45. The state had to make a slight dogleg around it when building I-45. I never knew it was there but for gridlocked traffic. Wunsche Cemetery.

For clarification, this cemetary sits between the northbound main lanes of I-45 and the northbound frontage road. It used to be more predominate before the I-45 rebuild. Now, it looks like it was placed in the wall holding up the northbound lanes (it wasn't...as aretee3 said, TxDOT had to make some adjustments to I-45's travel path to avoid the cemetary.)

Very interesting video. For many years before they widen the road, there was the grave site with a cross on the east side of the road. In the Reader Newspaper it had always been a question as to who the cross belong to. If you travel south on RSF Rd. and make a left into the industrial park on La Costa Meadows Dr. on the San Marcos Creek there is the ruins of an old Adobe ranch house. Now covered to protect it. Further south on RSF Rd in the Stagecoach Park there is also the ruins of the old Adobe Ranch house that was part of a Spanish Rancho.

I love in this area and have travelled that road for 30yrs nearly in a daily. I would drive by in the back of my parents car as a kid and thru my teen yrs always aware of those crosses and had known what they meant after some finding out thru working in a bank nearby that was a senior committed area, and they'd tell me what it was about. I've always followed the news in reference to when widening that road came into talks in town (Encinitas, La Costa and San Marcos). I always knew that that would be a history of someone/peoples' graves that were there and concerned what would happen to the history of it. Though this video caught my eye when I was researching birds in the area, I knew that they were someone's family and that it had ALWAYS been respected and protected. I followed the families' law suits and struggles to keep it somehow where it was for years. I was kinda disgusted when it got approved and wondered what it was exactly that made it so the law suits failed.
