What's important to note is that some of Gou's changes from the original anime are simply events that were in the original Visual Novel that the anime adaptation didn't have time for. The suspicion of Tomitake is one such example - that scene happens in the original Visual Novel, but the characters brush it off because they find it a little too unbelievable. Rena bringing Keiichi food happened in the original, however it wasn't something his mom was aware of. Rena in Gou clearly went out of her way to get Keiichi alone in order to attempt something, while the original's Rena (from Onikakushi-hen) seemed to just get the idea at random. Now for the changes Gou brings, I'd like to start with Rika and Satoko dying while Keiichi survives. I believe that either Rena killed the two prior, or there was someone else with the syndrome running around and offed them for whatever reason. Personally, I think the ladder makes more sense, and I'd even go so far as to say it very well could've been Shion. She's the only character that has a vendetta against both Satoko and Rika (as we see in Watanagashi-hen and Meakashi-hen), and because we never got mention of her, she could be doing anything and we wouldn't be aware of it. Rena's motive for murder still seems muddy, but I'd say that she probably was afraid that Keiichi would kill her like he did in Onikakushi-hen, or she was afraid he'd get suspicious of her and (if she really did kill people) find the dead bodies. However, I've been considering an idea since I saw episode four - that Keiichi actually had the syndrome, or some version of it, and just hallucinated everything. It's not a great idea, I know, but it would explain how he managed to survive against Rena. If he went after her first and she retaliated out of self-defense, then it makes complete sense that he would live while she didn't. He also would've had time to kill Rika and Satoko, as he wasn't really doing anything that day between school ending and Rena coming over in the middle of the night. This whole theory was crafted because of how we see him scratching his neck ominously near the end of episode four. It could also potentially explain why he kept having flashbacks to the bat scene - with the syndrome, he would be prone to hallucinations and these ones somehow wound up being his long-buried memories of a world that no longer existed, possibly his own subconscious trying to stop him from repeating these mistakes. That is just a theory, though. The other, smaller changes seem to indicate that, while Takano is still just about as evil as she was originally, she's most likely not the true villain here. I know a lot of people have been saying this, but the silhouette in the opening is Featherine from Umineko. She's essentially to Hanyu what Bernkastel is to Rika, a sort of witch alter ego who may or may not be a separate entity from the characters we're more familiar with in Higurashi. Featherine is the witch of theatergoing, drama and spectating, her whims fickle as she seems to root for all sides to win so long as the game isn't boring. This is showcased at the end of Umineko where (spoilers) she allows Bernkastel to be beaten and lets the protagonists win despite having the power to force them to lose (end spoilers). Though I'm not entirely sure what this means, I think it could mean that this is sort of like Saikoroshi-hen, one of the arcs in Higurashi Rei. Saikoroshi-hen has Rika waking up in a world in which everything is peaceful; there's no Irie, no Takano, no syndrome and no curse to worry about. However, that means no Keiichi, the town is close to being submerged and Satoko never became emotionally vulnerable enough for her and Rika to become friends. In the end, the way she gets back is left obscure as Rika wakes up in her world with all her friends, bidding farewell to the witch Bernkastel that lived inside of her. I feel that Gou's ending may reveal something very similar here, with Rika being informed that while this world is it's own, she's still somehow been removed from her own world in order to relive the events of June, 1983. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this really did involve the Umineko witches, especially Bernkastel (who I suspect can possibly possess Rika when she gets the red eyes) and Featherine (who I believe orchestrated all of this). Long story short, none of this will make a lot of sense unless you know both Higurashi and Umineko very, very well. But I suppose only time will tell.

Brought back so many memories of watching higurashi when they cry with my siblings all huddled up infront of a laptop on some bootlegged anime site watching episode after episode. Probably one of the best anime moments of all time.

One thing you missed from episode one: the importance of Hanu's disappearance for Keichi. In the original first arc, we know Keichi snapped because of the stress he felt from everyone, and it is hinted that it all started with hearing someone whispering "I'm sorry" constantly, which we know is Hanu doing that. But this time she is not there. So the show proclaims it is a remake, trick us into thinking Keichi is gonna snap again, then ep2 boom surprise his stressor is not there anymore and its a sequel

I only ever watched episode 1 of the original but technically I've never watched the rest of the series. it's nice that you explained it because personally I don't like old-looking shows but all this theorizing really explained it all. I love the little hints in the sequel too and I love theorizing it.

I have to say it really bothers me how shiny everyone looks in the 2020 version. I watched the original and I absolutely love it! It’s become one of my favorites. Also I’m so happy they made this a sequel instead of a remake but at the same time it’s sad that they have to go through these loops AGAIN.

oh boy, I have a million and a half things I could say about the umineko character in the shadows. she's just such an interesting character and that one shot of her gives a HUGE clue as to the direction of where Gou is going. Wow, I hope you make more on the new series! There were definitely a few things I missed. I've only watched it once as it comes out and when the season is done I was going to rewatch. I have seen hints at Takano no longer being the antagonist which would make a lot of sense as to why the whole time line is so... whacky. I'd like to think the witches from Umineko have a lot to do with this because thatd be a good segway into clashing the two series and maybe giving more information about Rika and bernkastel. Welp, anyway.. thats my 2 cents on it. I look forward to more

Just wanted to mention that in the VN in Onikakushi-hen (I'm currently playing it, actually) Mion does set up Keiichi with Rena by getting separated on purpose during the festival to give them some alone time. I'm really not sure why, if it's for teasing him or maybe she hadn't realized her own feelings towards him yet in this specific arc? Also Rena is in contact with Keiichi's mother, sometimes Rena gives their family home made pickles and stuff. Rena has also met his mother when he had a cold while checking up on him to walk with him to school.

Dude the original opening playing at the end of Episode 1 was really fucking hype, and Keiichi remembering his murder in a previous cycle really surprised me. This also really helps explain why this time around it was Rena who reached Lv5 - she murdered Rina and Teppei before Keiichi talked with Ooishi. I gathered that Rika talking to Keiichi helped prevent Keiichi from hitting Lv5 this time, but I was extremely surprised and confused when Rena started scratching her neck thinking "Wait why is Rena Lv5 in this cycle?!"

This is a pretty good analysis! Tho there's a little error on the grocery store thing! In the manga or the VN, I'm not 100% sure anymore, we see that Rena does meet Keichii's mom at the grocery store in the first loop, which is how she knew he was alone and eating instant noodles

But the most important question: Does Rika still do her "Nippah~"?!

This is a very good video, and a very good theory I hadn't really thought of. There are a couple of factual inconsistencies I found in your reasoning, though (mostly due to this info being more overt in the VNs): - Rena and Keiichi's mother are known friends in Onikakushi-hen. This is actually one of the answers for Rena's strange behavior in that arc: she knows Keiichi's food preferences and prepared her bento specifically for his dietary needs, and in Onikakushi-hen it's implied she was stalking him to get that info. Truth was, she shops for groceries at the same timeframe as Keiichi's mom does, and so they met and talked about Keiichi a lot. She knows his dietary needs because she noticed what his mom was buying for him. - Shion does have a crush on Keiichi, stated in Meakashi-hen. She just dislikes it because, to her, it's a betrayal of her feelings for Satoshi. It's actually one of the reasons why she specifically picks Keiichi to manipulate in that arc: she wants him gone because she feels he can replace Satoshi in her heart, and she doesn't want that to happen. - Tsumihoroboshi-hen isn't the only arc where Keiichi remembers his actions in Onikakushi-hen. Everyone remembers their past arcs as dreams in Minagoroshi-hen, Keiichi included.

After watching the 2020 with a few friends who haven't seen this show either, by the end of the first season we were confused and not sure if we wanted to watch more.
