Hey everyone! Here's what I think of the second arc of Gou, and I'm ngl I think I nailed it this time. What do you guys think? Also please try to avoid stuff after episode 8 since I haven't gotten that far into Gou yet (Update: I think I'm just not going to read or reply to comments until I catch up, the comments are too dangerous rn lmao. The gun she always carries with her[Mion] in the original and Gou. Is an airsoft gun not real and is never used. The gun she pulls out is a real gun. Also more interesting facts about Gou : They've shown some of the characters in winter uniforms. It is weird, since the series always takes places in June. And of course, the faces of Keiichi's parents.

Weird nitpick here but, in the end of the OG arc, shion doesn't actually kill Keiichi. Its apparently a hallucination caused by L5 of Hinamizawa syndrome, and he actually dies from a heart attack. Just thought I'd point that out

The scene that happens in Gou at angle mort, the conversation between Mion(Who is also upset in the novel about the 3 bringing up the curse), Shion, Tomitake and Takano happens in the visual novel, Higurashi: Chapter two Watanagashi.Alot of things that happens in the novel is left behind in the original anime sadly. Totally worth reading them all!

hmm I really don't think mion was the one behind it tbh! ryukisho07 has mentioned before that mion never falls deeply into hinamizawa syndrome because her sense of communication is a lot stronger than the others, and she's much more willing to try to talk to the others (you see this when she tries to talk to keiichi one last time in the og anime's first arc and keiichi hallucinates her talking about killing oishi, how rena goes to talk to mion in kai and deciding not to kill her dad's lover, etc) that being said I would have no idea when her and shion would have swapped and the final scene with her and keiichi in the cell does feel like her! maybe they did a bait and switch like gou's first arc and went back against mion never coming down with hs?

Hold up no mention of how the order of who won their games at the start finished (Satoko winning first and leaving with Mion instead of finishing fourth)? Okay so now I'm convinced that in the Gou storyline (Sound Novel info that was never in the anike for some reason) Mion and Shion were never swapped. In the Sound Novel, Mion and Shion had swapped on the night where Shion was meant to get branded with the tattoo, which is why there is the whole "GIVE MION BACK!" thing comes from. Shion swapped with Mion and was permanently branded as Shion, losing all the agency she had in the original. Mion being much more aggressive in this arc and having the ladder scene herself feels like it's implying that she is the original AKA who we know as Shion.

I've only watched 1-8 til now, too. I hope I'll manage the third arc today and catch up soon! In the game, Keiichi isn't the only one to get a reward in Watanagashi and I didn't remember they changed it in the 2006 anime. They originally all get something EXCEPT for Mion, which makes it even more annoying that he gave it to Rena, who ended up with a plush and a doll while Sonozaki got nothing. ;~; The extra info Takano gave was also from the game - a bunch of stuff in Gou seems to be sound novel non-arc-specific material that didn't make it to the 2006 show, and I enjoy that those who haven't played finally learn these things! In some of the PlayStation and manga arcs, Mion plays matchmaker to get Rena and Keiichi together and Rena plays matchmaker to get Mion and Keiichi together, so this is pretty normal behavior for the two of them. Pretty sure though both of them are crushing on him, they're really best friends and will be happy if the other is (That's how you do it, Shion, not being jealous and murderous!) Mion's always resented the cops because of the dam protests, and hates Oosihi especially, so maybe there's no extra-reason for her not to trust them. In the end of Watanagashi, Shion doesn't actually show up in the hospital. Keiichi is hallucinating because his ordeal sent his Hinamizawa Syndrome shooting up. She was already dead, having fallen from the balcony at her house. Now, in Watadamashi, I think Shion was passing for Mion in that scene at school where she's all "PEOPLE AREN'T WHAT THEY SEEM", but what you said is quite likely, too. And... I'm still suspicious of Satoko. She accused Keiichi too fast, and it's the second arc in which she's found dead next to someone for some reason, but we don't know anything about what happened in the hours before she died. She might be remembering, but I can't stop thinking she might actually be behind some stuff. :(

About Satoko being in the shrine: in the VN (Tatarigoroshi-hen) she played hide and seek, found a way inside the shrine with the intention to hide in there and accidentally found out about all the torture instruments. I guess that's the context for her being in the shrine in the opening

In Gou, they followed the Watanagashi arc of the VN more closely than the 2006 anime. A lot of the changes basically up until the Festival begins were things from the VN that were cut from the 2006 anime. But here's a problem I have: Keiichi gives the doll to Mion, which doesn't happen in the VN and gives the illusion that the tragedy has been avoided, and then meets Shion. In both the original and Gou, up until they run into Mion at the game shop, Keiichi *does not* think Shion exists. He thinks that every single time he sees Shion, it's just Mion pretending to be someone else so she can be "girly" with Keiichi. So when they go on their date and Shion asks for the doll, Keiichi thinks it's actually Mion asking. In the original, this is important since he *didn't* give Mion the doll. It starts to reinforce how he sees Mion and their relationship, and he's aware, thanks to Rena, that Mion was hurt by him not giving her the doll, so he agrees to try and fix his mistake (too late for that though). Then they walk inside and run into Mion and he realizes that he was wrong and Shion is actually real. But in Gou, Keiichi gives Mion the doll, and then everything else plays out the same way. It's kind of weird that Keiichi, who already gave Mion a doll, agrees to buy her another *identical* doll. At first I was like, oh... maybe this is different and he does think Shion is real this time? But then they go in the shop and he's SHOCKED to find out that they actually are twins. So from Keiichi's POV, he gave Mion a doll, then agreed to buy her the EXACT SAME doll later? Why? He has no reason to do that, he hasn't hurt Mion's feelings like he did in the original, so why agree to buy a doll that SHE ALREADY HAS??? Hell, Shion asking for the doll in the first place was due to Mion's hurt feelings about not receiving it, and she *knows* that Keiichi thinks she's Mion up until this point, so why would she even ask if Mion *did* get the doll? Idk I just thought that was weird. The doll seems small but is vital to the plot of Watanagashi, and in Gou, it kind of felt like they didn't understand its importance and instead were just copying and pasting from the VN without actually giving any thought to how it would contradict the change they made.

The original had stick limbs, which is pretty weird, but I’d take it over the weird UwU kitty mouths in this one. Idk why but it bothers me a lot.

Really glad you kept making this. It has been so long since I've seen the original I didn't notice all the subtle changes. Though for this arc they were less subtle. This is going to be an interesting series to get through.

I think it might be my nostalgia for the old series but I have trouble seeing the bigger picture in Gou which made it hard for me to completely enjoy so it's awesome to see videos like this explaining everything I missed which makes this season feel interesting. I'm caught up in Gou so watching this while I am way past it and hearing your thoughts makes me smile cause oh my gosh, it's amazing how much clues you picked up which are right! I guess I'll be watching your videos after every arc then.

Tbh... From episode 1 to 14 I always thought that the blonde girl in the opening was young Takano and that there was going to be a Takano arc but the... The "flashbacks" of Takano loosing started to appear so I was really confused until episode 16-24

Hey uh Shion isn't a yandere. She just feels responsible for what happened to him, responsible for his sister, and still has loads of pent up anger towards her family that all but abandoned her. She also is really bothered that Keiichi (or most people for that matter) can't tell the difference between her and Mion. Hinamizawa Syndrome manifested in "holy shit I gotta kill for satoshi" because she is so stressed out and angry and doesnt want to take responsibility so she deflects it onto Satoshi to make herself feel better for killing people, especially for killing the person she was supposed to be watching over as his last wish before he was "demoned away." Watanagashi and Meakashi are really hard to follow in some places especially if you havent read the vn so it took me a long time to figure it out but yeah. She's more of a yandere deconstruction than anything Edit: also, isnt she carrying a stun gun with her most of the time??? Not a legit gun?

I started digging through tge VNs to be able to notice even more changes and I’ve noticed that some scenes from this did happen in the vns but not the anime such as Keiichi’s dad going to angel mort and Shion having to clean up the weirdos crotch

In regards to this arc's difficulty, I have the complete opposite opinion from you: out of the three question arcs we have, this one is the hardest to figure out. Mion is too in AND out of character for one to pinpoint what's happening to her. First of all, out of the six club members, Mion is the only one never to succumb to the violence of L5 Hinamizawa Syndrome. The manga spinoff Hinageshi-hen (which is a fan arc made official, so its canonicity might be dubious) seems to imply she can go to L5, but will destroy herself instead of others. Mion tends to shoulder burdens herself if it alleviates someone else's: which is why I think her randomly going yandere against Shion makes little sense. In Meakashi-hen, she confesses to Shion that she also loved Satoshi, but since she perceives herself as having stolen all privileges from Shion, she stooped down to let Shion have her shot at love. With Satoshi gone and both sisters believing the Sonozakis were involved, I would expect her to double down on this attitude. HOWEVER, I also can't say with certainty that this means the Mion in Watadamashi-hen is Shion. In Meakashi-hen Shion has to bullshit through her explanation of Hinamizawa's rituals and costumes and the Three Houses' involvement, because she actually has no idea about any of that, and at that point she doesn't care to look into it. The Mion of Watadamashi-hen is factually correct in everything she says about the matter, and that's what confuses me. The Mion at the end is either a somehow fully informed Shion, or really just a Mion that feel too deep into a cospiracy theory. What could've happened is: Mion, like in Meakashi-hen, witnessed Shion and Keiichi entering the Saiguden. Keeping Shion with her for safety, she tells it to Oryou, and tries to alleviate Shion and Keiichi's punishment to no avail. Just like with Shion, her confrontation with Oryou ends with the old demon passing due to a heart attack (Shion accidentally caused heart failure when she tased Oryou), which sets Mion off for good. Since her primary source of Three Houses info is now dead, she goes after Kimiyoshi and Rika. Rika, in her endless Watadamashi-hen optimism, refuses to tell her anything and pays for it. I see no reason for her to kill Kimiyoshi, since he doesn't tend to withhold anything, but at this point she might've been too far gone. I'm also struggling to see why she would kill Shion, for reasons I have already stated.

I'll be surprised if I see a higurashi arc that ends with Rena, Mion, Shion, and Keiichi in a Polymarus relationship

@6:55 Regarding Change # 2, the slamming sounds that Shion was hearing was actually due to her high level of Hinamizawa Syndrome causing a heightened paranoia, but also sensory awareness to Oyashiro-sama. Namely, Hanyuu. Hanyuu had followed the group into the shrine and was stomping her feet angrily about both the intrusion and conspiracy theories Takano was spewing about Oyashiro-sama, Hinamizawa/Onigafuchi and the curse. You can see this in Minagoroshi in Kai when Rika lets Takano in the shrine herself. One difference in Gou? No Hanyuu, no stomping, no sounds.

I don't love the idea of Mion being the one to carry out the murders. The themes of friendship, trust, and communication are important and widely seen as the reason why characters don't fall victim to the syndrome. We see in Kai that if Keiichi, Rena, and Shion are open and honest with their friends and family about what they're feeling, they don't succumb to the virus and the tragedies are avoided, and Rika being honest about the loops and what she's going through is what leads to them finally defeating Takano. I think this is why Mion never succumbs to it. She's not always open in her feelings to Keiichi, but she doesn't hold it in. If something is upsetting her, she tells Rena or Shion. She's said to talk to her grandmother about things she doesn't like in the village, like how they treat the Hojos. She's fiercely loyal to her friends and will do anything she can to help them, even if it means moving a corpse. She's the poster character for the themes the show is pushing and that's why the virus never gets her, so if they were to throw that characterization away to make her the villain... I don't think I'd like it. I guess it's theorized that Satoko is injecting people with the drug that makes them develop L5, so I suppose she could have done that to Mion but Mion doesn't seem nearly as insane as the others at L5 that we see later in the series. We'll have to wait and see but I'm side eyeing it heavily

I'm not gonna mention current revelations in the recent episodes as Gou is wrapping up, but rather jus things i wanted to point out in the video! >All the beginning portions of this arc are actually scenes from the VN and manga that the 2006 anime left out! The curry competition, the walking on a date with Shion and meeting Mion in the toy store, the otaku with the food on his crotch, Keiichi's dad taking him to the cafe etc. Gou is specifically adapting scenes from the source material that the OG anime specifically left out or told incorrectly. Likely for the purpose of giving veterans something new to look at or jus for funsies. >Shion didnt kill Keiichi at the end of the og arc, it was Keiichi suffering from the syndrome triggered by Oishi feeding him totally crazy information. >Mion's gun is an airsoft gun hence why she never uses it. The gun she uses at the end of Gou is a real one. To get a wider scope of the series, I definitely suggest reading the manga before doing the video for the next arc!

I love Higurashi. Started watching it about a week ago and I loved watching Gou. (Episode 16 fucking scarred me though)

At 4:10 when you mention the swastika haircut lol So I think the reason we actually see swastikas in anime more often than in any sort of western media that isint making a direct relation to Hitler is that its supposed to actually be some ancient Buddhist symbol that most likely has some meaning of balance to it. The other reason is that I'm pretty sure Japan spends less time on ww1 & 2 than we do since American history Is relatively short in comparison and Hitler being from Europe the swastika has a really strong relation to him in Europe. Thats most likely why you'll see the swastika thrown around so comfortably in anime while we immediately see it and make a connection to Hitler

Is not that she knows that the 3 families are behind the murders, is just the effects of the Hinamizawa syndrome making it up because of the advanced state of the illness, making everyone look like an enemy. She takes everything just like Shion does in the original series, but in this case to avoid Keiichi from getting hurt.

The swastika symbol might actually be the symbol of divinity and spirituality in Buddism since it faces the proper way for that, swastika's go the other way generally. It was most likely changed because anime is worldwide now and most people outside of Asia wouldn't know that. I'm glad it was changed too though, in case it was meant to be a swastika for some reason.
