I would just like to comment that, from my perspective as part of the LGBT community, I do not feel that fetishization in itself is bad. Everyone has their fetish and art is an excellent way to explore these aspects of yourself and know who you are and what derives you pleasure without impacting another person...especially anyone non-consenting. Anime characters/shows/manga/cartoons etc. are works of fiction and can be enjoyed as such whatever that entails, they cannot give consent because the exist only in artistic formats. Regarding Loveless, I have nothing to say on the minds of the people who created it and their feelings behind it or those who enjoy it. Still, without this sort of 'bad' artistic representation, there would be censoring of these ideas completely and that is how we end up just not talking about these concepts altogether. Without bad things how do we know what is good, how do we improve? I feel that finding the line is something that everyone needs to explore individually and form their own opinions on and share with a group to form the actual consensual line, it why different cultures have different laws and societal structures. All I am saying is that, we need to separate works of fiction, like Cinderella from real princesses; we need to separate works of animation/manga from real LGBT people. There are stories, and then there are are histories. When discussing works of art, instead of framing them as for or against LGBT people, frame them as to their content and how it might be perceived instead, as well as how you yourself perceive it. :)

I can’t get why Yuri on Ice is on the top of hate list, because in Russia we actually adore this anime(for showing figure skating and not bad presentation of Russians despite of some stereotypes). Talking not only this anime but the others with a lot of haters in Europe/USA, sometimes it looks to me that community there is really toxic. Also Yuri on Ice first of all is anime about sport and showing gay relationships was on the side, so I think that the plot really underrated in this video

Given is a great anime imo, in the sense that you don't often see BL anime in which the plot doesn't boil down to just fetishization. where the point isnt "these characters need to fuck" and having it get brought up a lot until it happens and its played as the end-all for their relationship, to the point of neglecting an actual connection. I think Given handles this well in comparison to many other animes like "the stranger by the beach". HOWEVER. My main issue with Given was most definitely the movie. there's parts of the movie that are good, but i really didn't like that it fell into the BL trope of sexual assault. Haruki falls in love with Akihiko, and while Akihiko turns him down and very explicitly says he's not interested for most of it, there's a scene where Haruki gets drunk and forcefully assaults Akihiko, who has to go as far as shoving him off to get him to actually stop. later Haruki apologizes and they hug it out, and then end up dating, which that part felt actually pretty nice and from what i remember made me tear up, but when you think harder about it, it feels so weird. there was no need for the weird assault, there were other conflicts they could've come up with, and the fact that Akihiko forgives it so easily kinda rubs me the wrong way. Its a good series for gay rep, but it definitely could've been better had they not included that aspect. in general i wish there were more gay stories in anime that didnt revolve around sex as the goal of their relationship. there's a point where it just feels like fetish content.

I see many recommendations for mo dao zu shi and heaven official's blessing (because they ARE great); but I'd add that Heaven Official's Blessing's animated adaptation is not complete. Also, along with mdzs' adaptation, they are both subject to censorship leaving you sitting in the most insufferable unresolved sexual tension ever. These series can also be quite confusing to jump into if you're not familiar with Chinese fantasy media (characters having about 5 different names, the concept of "cultivation", honorific usage), but these cultural elements are really fun to learn; and personally, mdzs has some of the best drama/tragedy I've ever seen.

I would love to see you deep dive into Devilman Crybaby. It’s one of my favorite anime and honestly one of the few anime that gave me such a visceral reaction to an animated death. Also, god, maybe it’s the trauma of being an ex-catholic, but so much of the guilt in the show felt so real. I think it’s an absolute must watch in terms of anime.

I'm trying to find the article to link it, but the writer of Yuri on Ice actually stated once that there was never supposed to be a romance plot at all, but other people working on the project sort of expected her to add it due to subtle lgbt+ subtext in her other works. She specifically used the term "bullied" but later retracted the statements due to fan backlash. Now she vehemently claims that it was always meant to be a bl but not explicitly so. When she worked on Lupin the 3rd, she was sent harassing letters by fans who wanted Lupin to have a male love interest. What's worse, is these threats are not done by actual lgbt+ people, but typically by fujoshi, or straight women obsessed with bl. The article may have even been buried due to the writer retracting her statements. Watching the series I always felt the romance aspect was a bit forced or out of place, and I was really looking forward to the movie for a chance to see if they could smooth things over, but Japan really doesn't like gay romance in a not explicitly bl/gl labeled series.

Happy sugar life gives me the same vibes as lolita and the attitude of the fans re enforses this fact I really like how trauma is shown but the show is unwatchable due to its terrifying themes and relationships Edit* citrus was (painfully) my first "romance" anime and looking back I absolutely hate this show especially since the show cant even do the thing its trying desperately to do without coming across the wrong way. The show wants to be for the male gase but every kiss scene is so forbidding and the music makes the scene genuinely terrifying and the fact that every plotline is just showing the characters an alternative partner only for them to go back to eachother is so messed up. One contextual thing people forget about when talking about the first kiss scene is that the main character had previously saw mei get assulted by a teacher and was fetishising that TO HER (her sister that was assaulted) and the point of her sister kissing her was to show her that getting assalted isnt fun the line she says after doing that was supposed to convey that ("THAT was what it felt like magical enough for you?") but they just end up making it about them falling in love

(Some vague Wandering Son spoilers) I watched Wandering Son when I was 14 and I loved it but then I read the manga and realized the manga was actual pretty good. After reading the manga I absolutely hated how Mako was handled in the anime and when I tried to rewatch the anime recently I struggled with the pacing and how muddled the story felt. After re-reading the manga recently (and talking to nonbinary friends) I started coming around to Takatsuki in the manga. It is disappointing that the only supposed transmasc character ends up not being trans. However, it felt pretty accurate to how people may explore gender and how many people who end up detransitioning (who still support trans people) experience coming to terms with their own identities. That doesn't mean it's perfect or anything, but I think it is about the perspective. The only part of the manga I didn't like was Yuki, as she was the only trans adult in the entire story and felt very predatory. To me at least she comes across as the predatory transwoman stereotype instead of simply a good mentor for the kids. Her treatment of them is also never truly addressed, with 2 of them working with her at the end of the story. Yes, I know she is an important part of the story, but I hated how both her and her partner treated the kids. I won't go into any specifics because it is pretty gross. In fact, when I was first reading the manga I almost dropped it for this exact reason.

How was Junjou Romantic and Sekaichi Hatsukoi not mentioned they're like THE GO TO gay anime.

Please make whole videos on Devilman crybaby I would adore watching them! I am starved for discussion about it because I literally know no one who is willing to watch it because of the content. I managed to persuade my best friend to watch the older anime with me because the english dub is hilarious. (If you haven't watched the old anime with the english dub, it's pretty different to the new one, except it's framed weirdly more like a superhero anime with the most janky dub possible, it's like they shoved as many swear words as possible in. Akira goes from saying "f*cking hell" to "Gosh, Ryo." Pretty damn quickly. Genuinely made Devilman Crybaby funny.) Either way, I'd love for more people to talk about it, I know plenty of people have watched it, but I feel like it's not talked about often anymore!
