My Book Off missionary work is complete, haha. The funny part is despite having to ship a lot of my books back to the US, the total cost was still over an order of magnitude cheaper than it would have been to pick up the books in the US. Also, I don't expect sponsorships, haha. I just thought I had to make it clear that my obsession towards Book Off is a genuine one, lol.

Glad to hear it, haha. Believe or not I had to tone my enthusiasm down for the video. Even some of the clips I left in where you can see my live reactions to different things like the Vagabond volumes + Plastic Love were the more tame part of the reactions, haha. Although I have not heard of Sound Horizon, Book Off is filled with "Woah, that's so cool moments."

I know this video is a year old, but for those who aren't Japan like me. You can still get Japanese manga (in Japanese) from Book Off from the US online shop. Now it's not as cheap as getting it in Japan, but I've gotten complete series for about $4 per book which is a pretty good deal. The only downside is the selection isn't as extensive as a physical store.

Banger vid! Looks like one can spend their entire stay in Japan just in this store. It seems endless! The most important question is though, do they ship internationally? Where do they get all these used books from? It's commercial quantities...it's all private individuals selling their old books? I'm coveting that Berserk... Even more important, do you play the drums? I must disagree about the 立ち読み thing though, i like to browse and skim before i buy and i wanna look at all the pretty pictures!
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency Жыл бұрын
I have spent many many hours browsing Book Off, haha. And no, I don't believe they ship internationally :( That is also one of the reasons I love Book Off though, there truly is no cheaper way to get it than going in person. You are rewarded for your browsing, as opposed to most stores nowadays where you are being upcharged from online prices. Book Off does have a website though, although in my opinion it is just easier to go in person as there is far more you can easily verify in person than you can online. And once again, it's cheaper. Book Off is ALL second hand (as far as I know). It seems like there may be a very small supply of specific goods such as the paint or some new release books that aren't, but 99.9 percent is second hand. Like I said, Japan has a lot of specific characteristics that make its model uniquely effective in Japan. As for the drums question, no, haha. A friend of my brother does. I make an effort to change the scenary throughout my videos, so many locations in a video are not even remotely close to each other, haha. With regards to 立ち読み, it does not mean skimming through books, and checking them out. You will literally have rows where 6-7 people are standing in a hallway 1.5 people wide, who will spend hours reading through entire books and then put them back and leave. It is beyond infuriating in person because most of the time they don't really even try to move.

Do you have any recommendations for specific BookOff locations to go to? Last trip was for work so my searching time was very limited and the only nearby bookoff (in Gotanda) only had a single shelving unit of manga. This time around I have a bit more time to shop, and I'll also be in other cities (Niigata, Kanazawa, Kyoto). While I'm looking for specific series, and will resort to using their online site to buy and pickup in store towards the end of my trip, I'd love to spend some time browsing at a physical location.
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency 10 ай бұрын
Only a single shelf!? That's crazy, I've been to like 12 Book Offs and never encountered that. Bigger cities have more books but less niche options as people pick them up immediately. I've been to every Book Off in Kyoto and I highly recommend checking out the Book Off Bazaar at least once. With that said, no Book Off in Kyoto only has one shelf of manga so you should be good, haha.
@callumstyan
@callumstyan 10 ай бұрын
@@lazyfluency Yeah I imagine the well known spots like a bookoff in Akihabara or Shinjuku would be pretty picked over in terms of full set bundles. Any specific locations you'd recommend? Are the other places like BookOff PLUS/Super Bazaar better to try?
@lazyfluency
@lazyfluency 10 ай бұрын
From my experience places near cities that are a little more rural (i.e. older population) tend to have some crazy deals as the target audience for many series doesn't align with the population of the area. Get too rural though and you have no options to work with. Book Off Bazaar is simply just a really cool store that sells pretty much everything and a friend of mine picked up a switch for 100 dollars off because it had a finger print (which he wiped off) on the screen at one.

Unfortunately Book Off does not do international shipping. Using a proxy service that buy items on your behalf then ships them / buying through amazon.jp and paying for international shipping are two options.
