His years as a dancer was what saved his life, very impressive retelling of the incident by Dick Van Dyke.

Isn’t it always the same, the scariest characters are always played by the nicest people. I bet he was Dick’s inspiration to keep on dancing, cause seeing a 60 year old man ballet his way out of death I would be too.
@jay-day2 жыл бұрын
Actually, what makes him so scary is his seeming innocence and overt friendliness. He is literally dancing around (he was a ballet dancer), inviting children to partake.in his sweets in an enticing, sing-song fashion. The children are lured into his vehicle, jumping and squealing with delight at the prospect of the promised treats. Then, as soon as they are inside his carriage, the colorful decorations fall off his carriage, and it becomes a cold, metal cage whose door is slammed shut with the children screaming helplessly inaide. His pleasant, sing-song voice becomes a cold, maniacal laugh as he bolts off with his captured prey.

If Dick Van Dyke complements you on your dancing ability and calls you graceful, that is high praise indeed.

Sir Robert Helpmann - Aussie Legend and National Treasure!
@Dane_Youssef5 ай бұрын
This is when I first knew of Sir Robert Helpmann. I became a fan--he was such a villain. No less than world-renowned author Roald Dahl created this character for the movie to create the kind of baddie that would inspire generations of children from all over to have nightmares. And when I saw the documentaries on the late Dame Margot Fonteyn, much was made of him as they were so close. He was a ballerino. I saw his contributions to ballet. The man was a man of considerable talent and will be missed. As it should be...

Child catcher was one of my favorite characters in this movie! I love how he says “LolliPOPS, treacle tarts, and alllllll freeeeeeee today!!!” LOL Side note: when my mother was pregnant with me, I was so big the doctors thought I was twins, and she was going to name me “Jeremy and Jemima”.....thank goodness I was only one (albeit very big) baby! And for Barry Manilow....IDK if I could’ve gone through life named Jemima.....

As an adult, I'm not scared of the Child Catcher anymore, and even as a kid, I could see the cunning and the guile that went into creating the role. It's nice to hear confirmation that his actor was a sweet and caring person off screen, as I know several Child Catchers in stage productions of "Chitty" are off stage.

I love when he traps the kids in the jail wagon that was decorated to look like a candy wagon. Does he go back to get it to continue with that child-catching racket?

Amazingly, I can't say that the Child Catcher has ever creeped me out in the slightest. Not even when I was a kid. For some reason, then and now, I still see his character and Robert Helpmann as a laugh riot. I always thought the same about the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. Not scary at all and both laugh riots to me.

What’s sad is I’m the naïve type to not be scared so much as attracted to him (the character), I think if I had a character in the story, she’d befriend him? Maybe warm his cold heart and try to convince him to maybe change his career choice? // - bc I think he’s rather handsome (also I love big noses.. 😅) and love the trope of sweet/innocent character bringing out the best in otherwise creepy spooky broody types w genuine love and interest ^^

Exactly. It reminds me of the mother of darkness castle in Belgium. Like in the movie The surrounding village of this castle in real life is very eerie with no people, certainly no children, and a lot of old sandstone buildings and cafes which look more like props than actual businesses. You can have a look for yourself on google maps
