@@TheRetirednavy92 One young girl I was in love with tried to emasculate me by doing make-up on my face and asking me to sit on her lap at parties. Then she suggested that when we marry, I should change my name into hers. Given my state of mind at the time, I knew I would have followed through. All those steps are legit, but given that society is not accustomed to that, I would be left in the cold like a fool now if we had divorced after that. I am happy that we broke up before that. Wow, we d so much for love which can be detrimental.

@Q I'm not sure that's true, although "budgeting" isn't the word I'd necessarily use when it comes to managing wealth. But having a sense of how far your money will actually go- its value, and how to maximize this- would be key. Lottery winners who aren't financially literate and don't visit financial planners or make wise investments but opt instead to buy mansions and luxury vehicles for all their family members usually end up broke.

Thallium poisoning is a miserable death. A man in our neighborhood poisoned his next door neighbors with it because the teen sons annoyed him, and he had such a high IQ he thought he could get away with it. The mom died and one of the boys had to go through extensive therapy to learn how to walk again. The man (George Trepal) was eventually caught, after an undercover investigation. He’s on death row now, but it’s been about 30 years so I think natural death is going to take him first. It’s crazy to think this happened so close to home, I even went to school with the boy that almost died. Everyone cheered wildly for him when he graduated on time.

I was a very young mother. I had four children by the time I was 26 years old and I learned a valuable lesson that I pass on to people. The only thing a child really wants in life is to know that their parents love them and that only comes by spending time having fun with them. All the store bought things don’t matter if you don’t say, “I love you at the end of every day!”

Ingrid Dubbel You must be very young and single. I started having children at 19 and it was because my first husband threatened to kill me if I did not marry him and beat me up every day for two and half years before I finally got help to get away from him. And the only children who are born to parents to “Guaranteed Poverty” are from parents who were never told go succeed in life. And that you can have do and be anything you want in life. As far as the past, because birth control was illegal in many countries until 1947 and it was seen as a gift from God to bring children to the earth. Yes statistically you are right most young teenage moms and their children do not fare very well these days. However because I had a very good education my children were not raised in poverty and now three of them own their own business and one makes a lot of money being an underwater welder.

Hi Mort 😊! You're right, that's a very dark and interesting case; I have a book, it's called "Mord in Wien" ("Murder in Vienna"), where this case is included. One wonders how long she got away with practically everything she did. Even Felix Salten (the author of "Bambi") called her an angel while writing about the first trial 😳... Thanks for your great content, Brief Case, very interesting crimes!

I worked in a max security prison for women that housed 1,250, near Troy, VA. for almost 7 years as a senior officer. Your story is that of a typical sociopath that wasn't very smart. Greed and narcissism are the sociopaths worst enemy. Killing is easy for them. "To not kill", that is the hard part because it requires developed empathy along with the ability to feel conscience, guilt, and remorse. There are a lot of people lacking development in these areas of high emotional intelligence.

I know which case you are talking about . Both the mother and son were given the death sentence but the son's was later commuted . The mother and son were shamelessly carrying on an incestuous affair . They killed the son's young wife when she found out . The mother was beheaded by axe . The execution was partly botched as the axe passed out from her lower jaw instead of cutting off her head !! Gruesome !

Cutting your leg for money is insane enough, but what makes it even stupider is that it was completely nonproductive on the long term because when they ran out of money the man was no longer able to work. So it's short term "satisfaction" but for an even darker future. Good job, genius.

Perhaps the most eye-opening part of this tale wasn't what Martha did but the fact that the method of execution in Austria back then was beheading by axe. I genuinely thought that had died out back in the 1700s! Rather ironic, though, given what she did to that leg. I do wonder what she spent all that money on. Can't have been "stuff" as that would have had a resale value (jewellery, paintings etc). Wasn't property either. So where did it all go? Was she a gambler?

You are remarkable. You have helped me through quarantine d times with your amazing stories. I so much preferred the older ones - until this one. I could actually see her deciding not to remain poor- early 1900's - impressed by wealthy young socialites. But then she reminded me how nasty people are so damaged- and damage so. Horrible. What happened to , you reckon, to her head? I hope this became a folktale to scare youngsters and that the presentation of her head was possible if desirable. Crazy.
