This and "Balm In Gilead" were my grampa's favorite hymns. (He was a strong bass.) He didn't believe in organized religion, but he sure believed in God and hymns. I hope I'll see you again, someday, Grampa, so we can sing this together.

What a stirring A Capella rendition of this fine old hymn. William R. Holmes my maternal Great Grandfather fought on Union side in our Civil War. I treasure a 1938 dated photo me age 2 holding his hand but of course I don't remember. My mother and uncles attended his Aledo IL funeral in 1944. At 98 years he reportedly was one of the last hundred Union vets. Mom said this hymn was his favorite and sung at the gravesite.

I know of a church that has adopted this one as their theme. It is a little brown church, Brookdale. This was one of the 1st pieces I learned to play on the organ. My dad loved it. Thanks for the memories.

EXCELLENT! And you sang it like it was written. In all the congregations I've ever been in we never sang it exactly like that. The tune is the same, the words are the same but the tempo is always freeform. 😄

I'm an evangelist traveling from church to church all over the USA. We listen to your music for hours in evenings on youtube & we singalong, but we find many in churches who are still using CDs. Do you have CDs at a reselling rate for our booktable? God's people who don't use youtube would love this music!

@@acappellahymns Thanks for doing this one. When I was 9 I went forward to an altar of prayer at a church my family was visiting to confirm my salvation. It was this hymn that moved me to go forward, and has had a special place in my heart ever since. “Kneeling there in deep contrition,” “While on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by.” Looking back, it was when I was 9 that I started an after-school Bible club for girls in my class at school, which was just across the street.

Elliot, I did this on my four track back some years ago, and the last four verses I have in my very, very old songbook are different. Heartbreaking, I had to try many times to get through the last verse (weeping). So poignant and sad. I'll try to find them and make a note and see if you've heard those other verses. Good job.

Although they "updated" their hymnal in the 1970s, many Seventh-day Adventist churches still sing the old hymns. Just FYI. 🙂

Hello Aaron! It's tough for me to find a balance between staccato eighths and legato eighths. In the end I thought about how a bell might sound and sort of went with that. 😄

Hello Vere. Are you asking me? Or everyone here? It's probably best if you ask questions and wait for an answer instead of assume what I (we?/they?) are thinking. I think there are "church buildings" as well as "the church". "The church" is the body of Christ. The body of Christ often gathers in church buildings. I don't see a need to start an argument when one doesn't exist. Also, I wouldn't consider this a hymn for worship. But not all songs have to be hymns of worship. In my opinion, this song was mostly written to remind believers of their simpler upbringing and encourage them to "come to the church". It doesn't matter where the church gathers whether it be "in the wildwood" or in the city, in a "church building" or at home. It's just a song. In this song, the church building happens to be brown and in a vale/valley.

@@acappellahymns i was simply making a statement friend,there are a lot of people who believe the church is a building and this song seems to perpetuate this,thats why we dont sing it in a lot of congregations in my part of the world.thanks for your response,i was not expecting one😊
