This is what happens when you take an idea that would work perfectly as a Black Mirror episode but stretch it to movie length for $$$

you can say that for a lot of movies, that concept would only work as TV show, Fantastic Four comes to mind, it shouldn't of been movies, it would better as TV series.

Bro the entire film I kept thinking that this film is a brilliant concept, good script, great cast but was directed so badly. The pacing fell flat. It felt like there were missing scenes and like you said the shot selection wasn't on the ball. Also the music was mediocre. I felt like there should have been voice over. It felt like a long winded, watered down version of black mirror. What a shame. good review.

To use a line from the movie, "Unfulfilled potential." Speaking as a person who read the book, the movie was a big disappointment. With great material and great actors to work with this film squandered what it had. The characters of Mercer and Ty were not developed at all. With all the stuff they left out, like the whole relationship between Mae and Ty a lot of stuff didn't even make sense. Also I don't know if it was the actor or the direction, but the scene where Mercer comes to see Mae at work was so bad I was cringing the whole time.

Sorry for the novel... I haven't seen this yet, but from what I can tell here, the themes in the film were mostly true to the source material -- they just weren't properly conveyed. The book takes an EXTREMELY satirical tone (borderline South Park levels) when it comes to corporate culture, social media, people willingly over-sharing and embracing the Circle's overreaching services. So for Chris to say that he didn't understand how people accepted it makes me think that satirical tone was dropped. Mae is supposed to be bland and unlikable, because she's completely lost her identity and drank the corporate kool-aid to the point where she can hardly interact with real people anymore. She's consumed with building her brand and completing the Circle. By the end of the story she has 9 computer screens and literally dozens of metrics and levels of communication she has to juggle. Her parents and ex-boyfriend are supposed to be the voice of reason, so it makes sense that Chris liked them the most. In the end, if you left the movie feeling anything but contempt for Emma Watson's character, then the movie effed it up.
@cruddddddddddddddd
@cruddddddddddddddd 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I wondered if the book was the same. That satirical tone is lost during the last act of the film, and it seems to embrace the idea of being completely transparent with millions of strangers, as if it’s a good thing... which made me sick, to be honest. The satire is somewhat there after she starts working for the company, then just goes away. It felt like the directors/writers drank the cool aid. It made me wonder why they dropped that tone-if it was intentional or not. Grossed me out.
@barrydingall
@barrydingall 4 жыл бұрын
Josh Morris you should definitely check out the book. I’m not kidding when I say it’s literally like an episode of South Park at some points, then the tone shifts and it becomes really dark and surreal like an episode of Black Mirror. There’s this really on-the-nose metaphor comparing the company’s founders to fish in an aquarium that’s pretty creepy when you think about it and how it relates to the people who are actually in power at these giant tech corporations.

I just watched this movie and after the final scene I was just angry. It is easily the worst movie I've seen in a long time. They try to put in so many plotlines, that none of them are actually developed. Like, the Boyega character was set up as this guy who created something that he now hated, and when Watson goes transparent, he just stands in the background shaking his head. But then in the end she calls him up and it's like nothing happened. WHAT THE FUCK?!!

I can see Emma Watson becoming a top star. She has the looks. She needs to do two things to improve her acting. 1) Work with a great director like Fincher or Hooper. 2) Becoming less self aware. She seems to be too concerned how she will look on the screen. An actor cannot do that. Hope she improves.

I am not a feminist but I dont care about 4 and 6. You must be a kid if you think that way. 3 is the same as 1. It is better to practically work in a film with a director known for extracting good performances rather than take acting lessons. As for 5, if you think she is not a beauty, well that is subjective because to millions she indeed is one. Please do not compare beauty to a drawn character. It is rubbish to do so.

Hey Chris, always enjoy your reviews, good job. I was wondering if you'd ever do a review of Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood", the one with Russell Crowe, Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett, and Max von Sydow. Personally, I love the film from the authentic look and feel of the period to the strong acting all around. My only real flaw is with the kind of muddled, meandering plot (which I fairly easily overlook because the film itself is so engaging).

Israel Pallares She has been pretty good for a while. Panic Room was one of my favorite movies for a few years and she does a great job with that role. Twilight and Snow White tarnished her reputation for a while. In Personal Shopper she absolutely blew me away

Sheamus Catuli Kristen Stewart was phenomenal in Welcome To The Rileys opposite James Gandolfini and in Fierce People opposite Anton Yelchin. I'm serious...after watching those movies I can't tolerate people stating so surely that she's a bad actor

The writing was absolutely atrocious: Almost none of the characters did anything whatsoever, there was no character development, no tension, and the ending was more disappointing and illogical than the Star Wars Prequels. Besides that, the only good acting came from Tom Hanks; none of the actors could be subtle in any way. Everything felt way too forced, and nothing felt realistic at all, except for the premise. Even if you don't take any of that into consideration, it doesn't detract from the fact that

The movie was written to make it look smart, but actually lack any form of substance so that average moviegoers will think it had deep, meaningful messages, when in actuality it was just the writers not explaining anything at all to make the viewer guess at what is going on. Emma Watson's character is extremely thoughtless, heartless, and doesn't seem to actually have an explanation for why she does anything. This movie actually offends me considering how millions of dollars we're spent on this pile of flaming garbage.

After finishing the book (like an hour ago) I watched the trailer which made me already doubtful about the movie. So I watched your review and I gotta say I'm not surprised that the movie turned out like that (of course giving it more effort and finding the right story in the story could still make a great movie, but just trying to adapt this book could only fail). I was totally engrossed by the events in the book. It's almost like a very long episode of Black Mirror. And our protagonist, Mae, she really doesn't have a lot of personality. She's sometimes a bit weirded out by what's happening but she adapts fast and engrains the ideas and ideology of the company perfectly. She becomes perfectly assimilated. So the fascination in the book lies not with the character and how it's reacting but with the things that are happening. I read on and on just to know how far the company would take this madness. And it was great - in book-form. For me it worked there since I just watched the events through Mae's eyes without really needing her to comment on them or do anything about it (It's kinda like in one of Junji Ito's stories). But when you try to make the story about her - what the movie seems to do - than it gets boring. This story can not be told in a comepletely different medium in exactly the same way. Thanks for the review. Now I know I don't have to bother to spend money on it in the theatre.
