Another early 1984 interview featuring Bernie Rhodes doing a ventriloquist act on a Joe Strummer puppet. Not the best Strummer to remember.

I respect what Joe was trying to do at this time and what he was trying to say here. Great passionate rant

He’s speaking his truth at the time. Good for him.

The Clash was never the same after Mick Jones left.

I love Strummer but he'd seemingly lost the plot at this point. He's almost exploding with frustration and sadness.

I never understood how Paul just sat there throughout this whole crazy Rhodes phase. He always did look up to Joe too much to the point that he lost his own voice. He called him his 'older brother' during the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction and that's what he was during this demise of The Clash, Joe's little tail.

The description below this video is 100% truth. Strummer being overwhelmed by his own ego, and also being a puppet of Bernie Rhodes.

I realised there wasn't anything. Any record, that I could have safely grab hold of, and leap out of a space-shuttle with. Yellin... and feeling satisfied.

I agree with Matedog's Bernie comment, but I appreciate seeing the video nonetheless. Thanks for posting this.

Poor Joe. He rehired Bernie, he fired Topper, he fired Mick and then turned The Clash into something best described as "Sham 69 with 80s synths/drum machines". He's talking pure bollocks here.

totally agree, this doesn't seem like the down to earth strummer that fans know. he talks of not overdubbing things, all of london calling was over dubbed. two takes on every song to make it sound bigger.

The show was called Fridays. I don't remember the details exactly, but I believe he produced a band's record some time around the end of 1980 and accepted dentures instead of money.

well done on getting this in watchable quality, no sign of the supposed live clips of Clampdown & I Fought The Law? do you think they ever existed? i just can't imagine a certain tv show being set up for capturing live concert audio

@moneyhorsehouse I think Strummer sounds completely down to earth here. Everything he says about America still applies today.
