Haha, Paul looks a bit annoyed when Mick starts complaining about how they've been treated in Germany. I seriously love those guys ! When I saw them live for the first time at a Gorillaz gig last week I seriously thought I was gonna have a heart attack the moment Mick and Paul entered the stage. Best day I had in a long time ! The Clash will always be the only band that matters !

I think it is Topper who adds "unless we're at war". Mick comes across as a brat, Paul keeps giving him weird looks and is his usual charming self; Strummer is detached, pacing up and down and says nothing but: "What about the German birds?"

from what I understand this black telecaster was a loaner. joe's famous telecaster was originally sunburst color. I also used to think this telecaster was his famous beat up one. read Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer by Chris Salewicz, theres a lot of good info.

Fuckin' shit) But in the first time I've seen the Film sometimes when I was 18 years old on TV (sometimes, early in the morning, maybee 1 oder 2 o'clock.) THIS BAND WAS REALLY ELECTRIFYING! This is pure soul and pure energy! Best Band in the world, still. So sad, that Joe's dead, but I take comfort in the old songs, the mescaleros and Mick's new band, C/Si

This is a great video, first time I've ever seen it. I only saw them once in real life, and I still love them and want to be in that band. I can see Joe is playing a Telecaster, but is it a Fender Squier? I don't know and it doesn't matter, this vid shows they were a really tight band, this must be from 1977/78 they are or just about at their peak. I an see why Joe was called Strummer from 3.37 - 3.55 about a hundread strums appx. There must be more rare footage out there, put it on 'ere, ok

I'm partial to Topper of course, but Chimes was just fine. I saw him do Safe European Home and he had plenty of foot skills going. Nothing like Topper though. What bugs me here is that Strummer keeps playing a major chord during the verse (the higher chord), when it should be minor. Damn punk rockers....

I don't understand all this talk of The Clash being posers. It's all punk no matter how I see it. Although they're a little more polished compared to a lot of the bands from the time I don't think that discredits them from being any less punk, which just sounds ridiculous to say the least. They weren't afraid to experiment with other influences & styles of music, & I think them being comfortable enough with themselves & their musicianship to venture out & do some reggae/jazz/funk/whatever else is pretty punk in my opinion. And I like a lot of the bands from the time like Wire, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Sex Pistols, Black Flag, DK, etc., & I think the clash is just as important as any of those bands.

you dont know too much yourself to come out with that statement. joesramone has it pretty much right i think on the drugs front. as somebody mentioned already the chris salewicz book can hip you to a lot of detail. another good source is johnny green's book (if you didn't know, he was their road manager from 77-80ish), lots of drug stories in that! just out of interest, what makes you think they were such abstainers?

Re: all this talk about "true punk". I'm a HUGE fan of The Clash, but they were essentially poseurs. Joe was in the 101ers pre-Clash, who were an R&B-inspired "pub band" and Mick was in a glam rock band pre-Clash. They saw "punk" and jumped on the bandwagon like the rest of England did after seeing The Ramones. The most punk rock guy in The Clash was Keith Levene, and he left right away and wound up in Public Image Ltd with John Lydon (Johnny Rotten); a band more "punk" than the Sex Pistols.

I agree that the clash were posers, in essence, they did embody the punk spirit, but punk wasn't their sound, they just used it as the mode to perform and present themselves. lyrically and technically on a completely different level than punk, but aesthetically completely punk. Nothing against them though, they just new how to really brandish that image, and they did it well. sex pistols, black flag, public image, dead Kennedys were real punk in image, sound and attitude. clash just in image and sound
