It's brilliant to re-live this powerfully raw Clash performance at the legendary Barbarella's in Birmingham. I was there 3 or 4 nights a week with my mates we were there that night - have just found out there's a shot of me with Ray Gange (Rude Boy!) @ 5.40. Got to say - Chuffed!

James that's right didn't one of them get hepatitis from this disgusting trend of spitting towards the band. Maybe it wasn't someone from the Clash but I definitely remember reading that someone got hepatitis this way. I also read in an interview with John Lydon, I think, and he mentioned that when they played gigs the band avoided the front of the stage because it was so covered in spit and snot that it became like an ice rink it was so slippery. What I don't understand at all is why kids back then would think that spitting on the band they'd payed to see and hear live was an acceptable thing to do. How did this disgusting craze start and why did it go on for so long. If I was in a band and the first three rows of the audience were clearing their noses and throats and gobbing it on to the stage. I'd pick up the mic and say "Sorry we won't be playing anymore and there won't be any refunds. Why don't you take it up with the first three rows" what a fucking disgusting trend. Reminds me of some low grade festival I went to with the likes of Doctor and the Medics and Zodiac Mindwarp, playing. I think it was headed by the Fun Loving Criminals, it was definitely during the set played by the Fun Loving Criminals that people were pissing in cider bottles and launching them at the stage. I remember seeing a young woman squatting on the ground, initially I thought she was having a piss but she was actually shitting in an empty see through toiletries bag. When she'd finished she stood up and launched it onto the stage. It landed right in front of Huey and burst open at the zip. It was at this point that the band stopped playing and Huey told the crowd they hadn't come to have bottles of piss and bags of shit thrown at them. They stormed off the stage. The rest of the festival continued in much the same way. The crowd had come to get wild on drink and drugs and not really to hear these third rate bands play. They began to enjoy chucking bottles of piss and plastic shopping bags of shit at the bands. I was so grossed out I never went to that festival again. I think it was Burning Man in south west Scotland.

Joe Strummer got hepatitis ,which he said he caught from `gob` but later related he caught it from a dodgy needle when he `tried heroin`,no doubt ` suffering for his art`.
@jackmolay70617 жыл бұрын
electricleg Thanks, I was pretty sure it was a member of the Clash that got hepatitis from someone spitting in his mouth. As for contracting it from a shot of heroin, I have to say I feel very sorry for the man. I know a guy who got hep c from an infected blood transfusion. He died about 14 years ago. They tried him on various treatments that's didn't work. His liver had become decompensated by the time they realised he had it. He was extremely ill,towards the end. It's not a death I'd wish on anyone. However I've heard that new drugs like ribavirin in use with other drugs have a 98% rate of success when it comes to treatment today.
@electricleg2077 жыл бұрын
Certainly a nasty a nasty thing to get ,common among drug users,very sad that you bloke you knew got it from a transfusion.I think Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) died from it.

I love the Clash and Joe Strummer, but Joe was a communist through and through; he didn't wear the shirt by accident. I don't share his politics, but I'm happy to hear him sing and talk about his since he's intelligent and sincere about it.

I love the Clash too but I agree, if he was still alive he'd probably sing for the migrants and hate Trump, Putin and Salvini. Without being aware of it he was part of the System, he was the propaganda of Liberals who ruined and destroyed Western countries. There's no secret, you can't be successful in the entertainment business if you don't serve the agenda of the System. I was watching right before a video of RATM, another libtards band... Rock is propaganda, not rebellion.

I was in the audience. It was nice to see myself on film at 17. I subsequently saw them another three times. Every time I thought they were shit fakers. Years latter my suspicions were confirmed when Strummer, was revealed as a public school boy, son of a diplomat. Who's amdram oink performance was very unconvincing. Insulting even. The stranglers, and even Billy Idol, didn't have that AstroTurf feel.
