In this video, I'm going to attempt to show and explain the difference between hook and friction response AND how you can train your eye to judge the difference in tough situations.

Really like the Classroom series as I try and absorb information and knowledge about bowling. I use to tell people I didnt know enough to be dangerous. Now I know enough to be dangerous but not enough to be really compentent.

I'm just catching up with your videos after a 35 year layoff from bowling. It's been a challenge to understand my ball motion as balls have changed so much since the early 80s...as have my physical attributes and strength. Having completed one league in my "comeback," I have found that consistency is the most important attribute. This video provides some really good insight for me to make a move to being more consistent. I'm looking forward to going through those I haven't seen and seeing some good progress in my game, even if it is slow. Thank you.

Good video that clears misunderstandings, and i must say this issue is more of semantics and what words are used properly. Meaning : 1. All balls have some amount of traction or friction at all times. It all depends on WHEN do they have the most or the least. 2. The term "hooking" has been used for motion. Because the word is about an object that is shaped as a curve. If something is going straight (even if it is spending energy trying to hook), it makes no sense to say "it is hooking". So this term was used ANYTIME a ball changed direction. Whether it was an early arc, or an abrupt flip quick response on the backend. The only "problem" was that people for many years have been using the same word for either case, so in order to be correct they had to describe with more words. 3. For me, the correct way to teach people is to start talking about energy and where and when it is transformed. And into what. I know it is a bit more "physics" than some people might be comfortable with, but with the right way it can be simple to explain. Great points about watching the ball revs in the first 2/3 of the lane. Something most people never do. Great stuff.

Hi Luke, how are you? I just watched your entire classroom series tonight boy do I have a lot to learn I need to probably rewatch it a handful of times but I have learned a lot, but I have a couple of questions for you. I think you did not cover in these specific videos if you have other videos that were not officially in the series, please put a link that way I can watch it. Number one I’m not at that level yet where you’re at but for those let’s just about ready to put it all together I have another idea for a video suggestion. Simply call it how to put it all together from all 10 lessons combined. Number two. I want your honest opinion on this, of course people have a right to do whatever they want not always see a lot of storm bowlers always talk about their new balls that come out and replace ones they previously had. What is the primary reason behind that? Is it for the company that they represent is the ball and or technology that much better than what they had even after let’s say a few months to a few years. I don’t understand why some balls go off the market so quickly like the proton physics or the supernova and if few others I mentioned to you before, and other great balls like I do have the IQ solid and the phase ii stay. terms does newer and or older mean it’s better I think that should be a classroom lesson in of itself. because we can all fall for the trap that we got had to have the best and greatest thing and there’s nothing wrong with something new and great but how can we tell it’s simply all hype versus it can be a reality? Makes sense great videos. I will probably have to rewatch them in greater detail, but I do know more than someone who has never bowled before. however I will probably never be at your level, but these videos are fascinating and interesting

Everything kind of relating to this is in the series already OR is old and outdated and has been covered in a newer video. Balls will go off the market when they're not selling any more and of course there's no reason for a company to keep producing a product that's no longer selling. The biggest problem people in the bowling world have is thinking that its businesses should operate differently from every other business out there. Bowling centers have to make money to stay in business, and so do ball manufacturing companies. In every other industry out there, people realize that companies and businesses will do whatever they can to sell their product, and that it's up to the individual to educate themselves so that they can dig through the marketing and advertising and figure out what's real and what isn't. In the bowling industry, for some reason it's up to the centers and manufacturers to go out of their way and sacrifice to serve the bowlers and the sport and that's just not the case. The main reason for product turnover is that people want new and fresh. The best example I can give you is of this new Optimum Idol that's coming out. The ORIGINAL Idol that this ball is replacing was very popular when it was out, it was available for a couple years, but then in the last 2 months it was in production, it only sold 20 units worldwide. Storm thought that it had run its course, that everyone had moved on, so they discontinued it. People instantly had meltdowns, and there was such a high instant demand that they did one last special production run and made 1500 balls to satisfy the demand. Now, a few years later, people have consistently been upset this particular ball isn't around any more, so they're now releasing basically the same ball again, they've already delayed the release date because demand has been so high, but this one, like others in the past, will eventually be discontinued because people will get bored again. I constantly have people ask me what they can get to replace their old IQ Tour or Hyroad that's worn out, and I tell them those balls are still in production and the best thing to do to replace something you already know and love is just get another one, but I also consistently hear, "well . . but I've already had a couple of those and I kind of want something new and fresh but that's similar." So again, it's only natural that a company is going to follow the market, and by continuing to release similar reacting balls that are slightly different in one way or another, they keep things new and fresh and interesting while still kind of keeping them the same because that's what the consumer wants no matter what they say. They'll complain about so many new balls coming out and nothing really changing, but they keep buying the new stuff and keep forgetting about other balls 2 or 3 months after they release, so this is a consumer problem, not a manufacturer problem. The companies are just giving people what they want because that's what makes them money.

@@LukeRosdahl thank you for generously taking the time to answer this. I like what you said it’s not like you’re getting a brand new car especially or new house with they were technology. It’s a bowling ball. Sure there’s technology in there and I’m absolutely for businesses to make a profit but I’m against price gouging, I do not know what to say this but I also agree with you that that’s similar why would you re-create it into it another color similar? If not the same core. It’s all marketing and I just purchased my very first phase 2 the other month and I’m like I said, I’m only getting in the bowling more regularly and other ball I got for better control is the IQ tour solid, I was leaning towards a big asymmetrical solid, and when I first saw the proton physix and the supernova honestly in my opinion when I saw theeir ball reaction when it comes to early and heavier oil I really enjoyed the way they reacted in ball comparison and review videos. Honestly, I wish they would bring one or two of those back. I just came into bowling just a little too late. If I would’ve joined a year or two earlier, I probably would’ve grabbed at least one of them. Now this is just me speaking I can’t speak for others based on the videos I talked about other balls that were made and discontinued between 2020 and 2022. Those are now discontinued. I have a little bit of nostalgia towards them versus the stuff today even though there’s other wrong with some of the stuff today I just think they were better based on I saw their reactions. Again, thank you take care looking forward to your upcoming videos.

Is the altered reality's "rev up" effect caused by the asym core? Wouldn't that be caused by the core changing the ball's rotation so that it's reaching a lower RG point and spinning faster (the old ice-skater bringing arms in analogy.)
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, the low RG and asymmetry is what really spins the ball up.

What is the fill material around the core? Is it the same in all of the SPI balls. I had a white Badger and it's outer core was the same as the cover stock and in 14lb ball had a different core and not even close to the same ball motion as the 15lb.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 2 жыл бұрын
Some like the White Badger and Hyroad are 2 piece, so it's just coverstock and inner core, but those that are 3 piece all have the same filler material/outer core material in them. The Hyroad is the same way, 14, 15, and 16 all have quite different numbers.

Excellent breakdown... I have a Reality and it's way too strong for me. For example, I'm a lefty, and I can't get it to the left like my Camo. Am I close to understanding friction? 🤔

I'm a lefty with a reality. Idk what it is about that ball. But it is either really good, or really bad. With no inbetween for me. Not sure if it the strength of the cover, a match up issue or a mechanical issue. Not much help I know. Just my 2 cents

@daviddeiss7907
@daviddeiss7907 2 жыл бұрын
Ok so the altered reality has hook and friction response and the hy-road has just friction response, can you take it a bit further and talk about what zones on the lane each would be most appropriate for? Like I'm thinking if I'm in league and playing zone one (1 to 10) then then that zone dries up and I'm forced into zone 2 (10 to 15) Wich is right into tweeners path then now I may be forced into zone three (15 to 20). Hy-road could be good for zone 1 and 2 but may not have what it takes for zone 3 but the altered reality could be good for zone 2 and 3 and even zone 4 if things get really crazy. Am I thinking this through right? Should I be setting my arsenal up for different zones on the lane and choosing balls that are designed for these specific zones?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, it depends on a lot more things than that, and with some stronger balls, as the lanes dry up, you may have to just put them away, you might not be able to move with them. Something like a Hyroad can get as deep on the lane as you need it to provided you have the friction for it. Now I DO talk a lot about some balls preferring certain zones on the lane unless your game has certain characteristics. The Idol line for example is REALLY good outside 4th arrow, but them and the IQ Tour line can start getting slow and lazy from inside of that unless you really get around the ball, in which case they really balance that out. However, then you have like the Rubicon and Rubicon UC2 that can be difficult to play straighter with because they're more dynamic, they don't really start warming up until you get to 3rd arrow and deeper. You can force them to work from straighter, but because they want to naturally cover boards, you're going to have to jam them or throw them harder which could make them a little over/under. So it's really a combination of lane conditions, stages of transition, AND zones that certain balls naturally like to be in, depending on your game of course.

How about something with layout selection. I’ve watched the pin buffer trilogy several times and I understand what each measurement does, but it’s still hard to put it all together. For example, if balls with one layout seem to burn up too early, what change might you try to tweak that layout? I know you could make surface changes in this example but I’m just trying to explain what I mean. Essentially when trying to find a base layout for someone, what things would you look for that would point you toward making what adjustments?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I could do that. I usually just point people that direction, but you're right, understanding what layouts do is one thing, finding the right one for you is another. I'll start writing on that and see what happens. ALSO, I tried to find something in the middle ground on that sound effect for our break down pair intro. Taking the sound out completely made it sound weird, just was too empty, so I adjusted it a little, and lowered the volume. Let me know how it sounds tonight. I was trying to find some different sound effects and some of them were even getting to me a little lol, so hopefully it'll work out. The change actually sounds better too just from an aesthetic standpoint, so no worries about the whole deal, hopefully it doesn't bug you anymore, or if it does, hopefully not as much anyway . . let me know tho.
@enigmazero8624
@enigmazero8624 2 жыл бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl you didn’t have to do that with the sound effect; I hope it wasn’t too much work. I’ll comment on the next show with my opinion since you asked for it. As for the layouts thing, one thing I think would have been a huge improvement to the trilogy thar Alex did was this: For each video there’s 3 (or 2) balls with everything the same except one of the VLS components, then they show one shot. One ball has awesome ball motion and seems matched up great, and the other(s) don’t for various reasons. I wish they’d have shown additional shots in a way that each ball was shown having great ball motion, and then we could see what the other balls did when thrown the same as that one. I think how it’s done currently is misleading because based on that one shot someone could come to the conclusion of “well a 4” pin is just better because just look at it”. If we see the other ones look good I would want to know what the 4” one looks like in comparison when it isn’t matched up. I hope that’s clear enough; you know I can be long-winded…
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 2 жыл бұрын
Nah, no worries with the sound effect, I think it sounds better now anyway, hopefully it sounds better for you too. Yeah that's always an issue with any kind of video, it's kind of wild how careful I have to be with making my videos because there's a lot of things that I don't want to possibly communicate. Like people want to see misses in videos, but as soon as you add them, then it's "wow that ball looks inconsistent," or "that ball seems to leave a lot of 10 pins," etc. Some things I just can't show, and other things that I DO show, I sometimes have to go really far out of my way to explain them, so I get exactly what you're talking about.
