Black Hat Bushcraft two other things about the clipper. The metal windscreen also comes off and it fits perfectly in a beer bottle so no bugs can get in it or to know which is yours if you put it down.

You can check the Bic fill level with a small flashlight if it's not a black one. Just shine the light through it and you'll see how much fluid is left.

I would agree, but I can't stand how impotent the Clipper flints are. My environment is frequently windy, humid, or my hands or gloves are damp. I need a flint with the nuts to actually strike a flame under disadvantageous circumstances, so I have to buy a Bic every time I need a new flint lol I'm gonna recycle them though. I saw a thing once that plastic bottles make good cheap insulation, and empty lighters are like tiny bottles.. . Immediate edit: to be clear, Clipper is the superior lighter to be sure. I only buy a Bic to replace the flint in my Clipper lol

Very well done video with lots of advantages several of which i had not thought of. I too carry that same orange clipper as my main lighter. There is one big advantage to these clippers that you did not mention. The clipper lighters are filled with Isobutane versus the bics being filled with straight butane. The isobutane vaporizes at 11 degrees Fahrenheit versus 31 degrees Fahrenheit for the butane lighters. Because of that feature, the clippers have a 20 degree advantage over the bic lighters in cold weather. The clippers will still ignite and flame at 20 degrees colder weather than the bic lighters will.

Far North Bushcraft And Survival - My experience is that the clipper does not work as well in cold. I have only used them down to 0° - 5° nowhere near as cold as you in Alaska. I did some research and BIC uses isobutane. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6x1rM-DtNW7eHU.html Curious?

@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 6 жыл бұрын
MutsPub Looks like you are right about Bics also having isobutane. I was not aware of that. I have used my clippers at temperatures that a Bic did not work which I took as confirmation that Bics were filled with butane. Perhaps though the bic had a lower fuel level versus the clipper I was using and thus affected the results. Will have to do side by side comparisons next winter when the cold returns again.

Insightful vid, thanks. My go-to lighter is a metal Clipper with flame height adjuster. They're more spendy but I like the added durability and the ability to adjust fuel output to adapt to low atmospheric pressure and subfreezing environments. I have broken the plastic flame adjuster wheel once in the years I've used them. I've since been more gentle with them. But, after seeing your vid, I'm contemplating tossing the transparent Clipper in my kit since it could be attached to a small flashlight to diffuse the beam into a floody lamp.

I'm a smoker and always carry Clippers (plural) because I can refill them and also replace the flints, and I agree they're great for camping trips, for all the reasons you stated. Should point out here in the UK we can get smaller versions too, the same size as the mini Bic, so these are easy to stash away for backup, I always have one in my coin pocket as EDC backup, as well as a full size one. In addition I carry a peanut lighter on my keychain, with a couple of spare flints in the bottom of it. Having said that, for an actual survival kit, with a lighter that you're not going to touch until you need it in a worst case scenario, a Bic is a better choice, simply because these are filled under pressure and sealed in a factory and contain a lot more gas than you can get in a Clipper. I used the same full size Bic for more than 6 months every day, also my work colleagues used it every day, but I need to refill my Clipper every month. Also the flint in the Bic is about 3 times as long as the disposable one in the Clipper. However I carry spare flints for my Clipper on me so I can get sparks out of it for a long time.

I agree with your assessment of the Clipper as the more bushcrafter-friendly of the two. I saw that immediately when I first heard of Clipper. They also sell flints* and ultra-filtered butane. Because they are almost "Bic-cheap", I bought them in bulk, along with flints and fuel. As I recall, they have several bulk-purchase options, including ones that come with a retail display (I didn't get THAT many.). I would caution, however, that the lighters are not as receptive to other butane refuelers as they are to the Clipper brand. Also, as one might expect, given that they are quite inexpensive, the refueling valve tends to malfunction after a few uses. Still, if you buy them in bulk, that won't matter to the bushcrafter who wouldn't be carrying the fuel with him anyway. To the long-term survivalist, it would make a difference, and he should therefore include some hardier refillables. *They are actually just tiny ferrocerium rods. I assume we call them 'flints' as a holdover from 18th Century and earlier technology.

Great review. I have used both for years. My take: Clipper - bigger flame!!, refillable!!, replaceable flint!!, striker wheel easier to use with gloves. Fill valve vulnerable to leaks especially if left in hot car!!. BIC - bullet proof construction, flashlight from behind to see fuel level. But - disposable. Both - Great lighters, Dry easy (roll wheel backwards on cotton), spark tender when empty, can use zip tie to prevent leakage. I carry a BIC everyday in baggie! I trust it more. Also, Fresnel lens in wallet. But, I use the clipper around the house more (refillable) so I don't burn my edc BIC fuel. Camping - BIC - in left front pants pocket, in baggie, as back up (as usual). Clipper - in right front pocket to burn stuff (main fire source). Tough Call. (Matches, extra BIC's, Zippo, ferro rod, Fresnel lens, magnifying glass and fire tender in pack.) Great camera work and video! Thank You!

You can see how much fluid the Bic has in it by holding it up to the sun or shining a flashlight behind it, even the black Bics light up well enough to see the fluid. Still, it's nice that the Clipper is refillable. The Cipper's sparker being removable is great. You can still use a spent Bic just for the spark, but the Clipper's sparker can go in the smallest kits. You can also transfer a flint rod from a spent Bic into another with fluid but no rod, but it is not as easy as with Clippers. You can put a second flint rod in a Bic too, but it is much easier to do it in the Clipper. You can also dry out a Bic as you have shown. Probably easier with the Clipper. The Clipper has some nice conveniences compared to the good old Bic. I have not seen anyone in Australia sell them, and I currently have a handful of Bics, and I am not a smoker, so I do not go through lighters quickly. If I find Clippers in a store, I might get a couple though. Great video on a great product.

While i prefer the jet or glow of windproof ligters, another good feature of Clippers, and he did touch on it at the start of the video, is that the circular base makes it stable when stood upright. While this may seem ike a minor point, it's only minor until you bump into the stand where you've place your lighter and it fall into the abyss. The wedge below the gas 'pedal' prevents the Clipper from rolling away too. Great ittle design.

Change the wheel with a wheel from a mini bic for mini clipper or crack lighter without the two spinning disks for child safety so it fits. Especially this one with a bigger clipper since it needs longer pins to hold itself in there a lot longer or you’d need pliers to dependably hold it in there.

The only thing you were missing on this is if you use the organic mz12 butane it gives it a hotter flame and also will not blacken anything you light you can use any organic butane for this!

I have a zippo with two extra flints inside the fuel area and carry a container of fuel. I little squirt of fuel a just a spark is better than most fire starters.

Love the removable flint and the refill option. Clipper and Bic lighters are both great. Why not carry both?. One is none, right?

And the flint stone is substiture also with zippo (too bad the wheel dont, easier to find a standard bick/cricket wheel lyin around). Been hubtig crcket wheels for normal gaslighter cuz its smooth lesss friction then bic /1 buck lighter

I'm not sure if you know about the turbo feature? Turn it sideways or even upside down for a bigger flame.

Question for Black Hat and/or others: How does the Clipper lighter compare to MK lighters, which are also "disposable style" but refillable and have replaceable flints? I found a package of 2 lighters that came with 2 spare flints and a plastic piece that is either a replacement flint holder or "tool" of some kind. Found on sale so purchased a pack and so far the lighter I'm using seems good quality.. but no idea about long term yet. :D

Let me give you a tip: Put genuine Zippo flints in Clipper lighter and you can start a truck.

I use a Bic as a spool to hold 2' of Gorilla tape for fire starting, repairs and first aid. Can't do that with a Cricket.

Yes - I VASTLY prefer the lighters with the press-down switch. I sometimes have thumb pain and flicking one of those stupid roller switches doesn't do it for me.

I've been smoking since i was about 16, I'm 68 now, and i bet that i might have a full pickup load of some of the disposable lighters that i have used in all of this time. I've had and used ALMOST all types that were ever made (but not all of them), the zippos are like a few already stated; just about the time when you need it the most, it's empty-evaporated-the throwaways...well, thats all they are,non refillable, but they are ok ; but you can't refill them, NOW; the flintless, these have the magneto ignition; this eliminates the flint and whole spark assembly completely, nice, BUT those flimsy magneto's are nothing but another type of throwaway jobs again; until you get a hold of a Ronson refillable; these guys are built for the long haul, the first one I've had (flint type) lasted about ? about 2 years or so, it impressed me extremely as to how rugged it was. It finally gave up to poor quality of the type of fuel that i was using (output valve got choked up) , ok next one i got was a much newer style ( jet lite), WOW this rascal went a good 6 full years almost non stop, except for an occasional refilling; but by now i was already wised up about the sorry fuel i was using SO i switched to a much higher quality of fuel, this is the result of such long life it gave me. It STILL works EXCELLENT yet, but...the hinge that holds the lid on tight has gotten so so worn that made me get a brand new one about....sometime in the middle of last year. Ooooo this one is a chip off the ol block(as saying goes). NOW, along about half way through with the first one i had is when i ran across the CLIPPERS at the tobacco store, hmm I've heard about them, ok i got me one, hey this thing is pretty good; that's been about 2 years ago, i liked it so much that about 4 or 5 months later, they had them again: ooo i grabbed me another one, just to keep one at another table that i hang around. But only a short time later, i was going to lite up,.....it wouldn't lite, checked, checked, checked, and very closely looking, i discovered that the lever that opens the valve was split and would slip around the output nozzle and could not lift it up,????? uhh ohh, hmm hmm, sooo, i put it up along with my collective of my favorites. NOW, I'm down only to my first one that i bought first, this one suddenly started having problems of its own; not enough sparks, hmm, i played with it for quite a while; i finally ended up going to the hoard of throwaway lighters and found a throwaway lighter that had the same size of spark wheel, got it out and replaced it with the one in the clipper; and IMMEDIATELY this replaced wheel filled up the spark chamber with much better and stronger sparks. OK, this works GREAT! Yes i have also discovered several months ago, myself, about using 2 flints in the flint chamber, but if you do use 2 flints,(in mine i have to tighten the screw holding the spring and flints in only about half way, leaving about 1/2 of it out ( not all the way in) mine has thus far not popped out yet. It would also be nice if you could take a fine tooth brush and brush the teeth on the spark wheel occasionally to keep the dirt and grease off of spark wheel to keep it cutting the flint better. Oh and on my clipper, i have to use an adapter that comes with some refill tanks to fill it with, because the spout on the refill cans is much smaller than the refill port on the clipper, the clipper has a bigger refill port then my RONSON has, this small refill spout is standard on most refillable lightrs, at least that's been my experience, BUT these CLIPPER LIGHTERS are worth checking out, i believe these will be around for a long time with me. Sorry for the mile long article.
