The Cognitive Science Behind Repeating Mistakes

Being constantly late, losing your phone, spending too much money, dating the same inadvisable people-these are all errors that human beings make over and over again. But it has more to do with how the brain is wired than with a lack of discipline. In attempting to understand where we went wrong, our brains create “mistake pathways,” ruts that we get into when we try not to make another misstep. In this short video, staff writer Olga Khazan explains the psychological reasons why it’s so hard not to keep repeating mistakes.

I think the issue here is that dwelling too much on the mistake puts you back in the mindset you had when you made the mistake. So you have to recognize the next time you act and then do the thing much differently, almost as if you were another person or at least a new person.

I see it as doing the actions in a different way, focusing on what we want, but doing it differently.

what if we don't dwell on the mistake, but end up doing the same mistake or making another one?
@neththom999
@neththom999 2 жыл бұрын
@@_laifishardisntit_1379 Then maybe you're not dwelling on the mistake enough, the key I think is not to dwell on it _too_ much but just enough to be aware that it's the kind of mistake you've made in the past and so have to be vigilant. Ultimately you want to dwell on the correct action you're going for, rather than the mistake you used to make. Visualizing yourself acting correctly in every detail might help as well.

@@neththom999 can you give an example of how you would put this into practice when the mistake you're making is procrastinating for example?
@neththom999
@neththom999 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jo-fs5 I guess you could pay attention to the kinds of things you do to procrastinate and then visualize yourself becoming aware and then choosing to do the thing you know you need to do instead. Like if youtube is where you tend to procrastinate then visualize yourself being on youtube and recognizing that you should be doing another thing and then moving over to that thing. By doing this you're dwelling on the mistake and correcting it ahead of time.

Part of the reason why I make mistakes are because I never stop comparing myself to the people on the other side, It always seems to me that the other side is greener and so I try to be like that and end up making mistakes.. I am never satisfied with what I actually have. I have changed my senior year subjects for like 3 times now and I feel like I was ok with the 2nd time subjects..

People tend to do small mistakes with small consquences over and over again. So small mistakes don't have a big impact on our life that's why we tend to do them again. People do one or two big mistakes in their life with huge consquences.

This video is a complete miss. If we want to fix a recurrent mistake, we need to have a clear understanding of what behavioural pattern is causing it. This usually requires loads of introspection that can sometimes reveal truths about ourselves that we are not ready to confront. Some people might need the assistance of a good therapist or coach to deal with it. So, we definitely need to look at our past mistakes to learn from them but in a very analytical way.

I think the grade in math are based like 60% on your mastery/understandment of the different math concepts and 40% on doing no mistakes a long the way during tests. For me i used different systems, thinking approaches to capture all possible mistakes during a question. You have to solve the problem in a way that reduce the number of failure probabilities. And also think through, your calculations and be very precise.

When are mistakes one too many is the question? Depends on what you allow, some people stay in whole marriages/friend groups/families wanting their so/family members/friends to change!!!! Look how long it takes yourself to change, what makes you think change in another is going to happen overnight? Question is how long will you be willing to wait? Some people wait a whole lifetime! What kind of substance are you on for you to think this??! Big or small idc, after a while it’s a CHOICE! I also don’t care if it’s water or blood, I will remove myself from the equation. You carry on living your life in circles and have fun repeating the same mistakes with the same outcomes 😁 I’m a sucker for learning and growing, I can’t stay around kiddo behaviour and stagnating situations.

I messed up at my job. This is not a one time thing. It was a series of mistakes and I was not able to cope up with my backlogs. I can't seem to focus. I keep on procastinating. *What? Being constantly late is not a mistake... there is nothing wrong about it, its just a poor habit. Losing your phone is a memory issue, again not a mistake. Spending too much money is not wrong or an error, its poor self control. Dating the same types of people is again not wrong just because the outcome is often the same, its a shallow like. A mistake is getting a word misspelled, incorrectly identifying someone, or going down the wrong street. People rarely repeat mistakes but they do repeat making bad decisions. Who is behind this nonsensical video??*
