Possibly my favourite episode yet and one that I will come back to. Thanks for the intro to Vincent Peters. Years ago I made quite a study of George Hurrell, Clarence Bull etc and their use of light. I would be interested to hear your opinion on using 'old school' tungsten light today.

@@geoffmphotography9444 I love Vincent Peters and researched him to better understand. The short summary is "cinematic technique". Peters shoots stills in a cinematic setting complete with the kind of constant light that they must use (because of the motion aspect). He rents monstrous HMI fresnel lights (ARRI et al) and lights his sets and subjects that way. The way to to do that today is by using the latest LED COB lights. The newest ones (eg Aputure) rival HMI for light output and can be fitted with fresnels lenses, so you can get the old school feel of Hurrell and Peters himself with them. (My last studio shoot just before the pandemic sidelined me was with such lighting. My best work yet and I can't wait to get back to it.)

I am a B&W photographer at heart. Even today 80% of my landscape photography is done using B&W film up to 4X5. I do shoot digital, and in colour. For me one the surprising photographers of recent years, who is no longer with us, was Peter Lindbergh. A fashion photographer of the highest caliber, who was credited with inventing the 'supermodel ' , and shot digital but in B&W. His images and videos are simply stunning.

Since getting back into photography 18 months ago having acquired my first digital camera, I have largely been focussed on colour marvelling at the capabilities of the new tech. For the first time last week, I had the opportunity of taking stills during a corporate video being shot at my work. I used the monochrome setting on my mirrorless camera for jpegs while also shooting raw. The B&W images of people were so much more impactful. Thanks for this video Alex. I am definitely going to spend some time reviving my love for the medium.

There's a timelessness to b&w. I've noticed that facial expressions and emotions seem to be intensified in b&w; without colour to distract the viewer the eye seems to go straight to the subject's face. I love Dotan Saguy's 'street' work. Alan Schaller and Valerie Jardin are a close second.

After sitting through a few propagation of light lectures I have come to harbor a similar attitude to color photography as I do to pop music; bored to tears. Oh there is no shortage of good, smart and provocative uses of frequency and, much of it invokes an emotional reaction in me but, at large I become bored quickly. I am fascinated, mind you, how light has memory of and expresses the textures it has just bounced off of. Regardless the image, you experience black and white in an almost tactile way. It lets your eyes pretend to be the fingers of a blind person, probing and feeling your way through the image. It's a kind of magic.

Color captures the person, B/W captures the soul. B/W is timeless Did some research on this matter just a month ago. Send 2 photos of a model, one portrait, one on a sofa, no nude, a coloured and a B/W version, to a group of people, aged 20-75, men and women. 75% preferred the B/W versions over the coloured ones. Give them a choice and even the young ones go for B/W.

The old cliche that black and white photographs the soul has some legs to it I think. Colour screams reality. Black and white, speaks quietly and we need to stop making our own noise to hear it. Like an icon. What is it? Sally Mann's very `other worldly' and so too is Geoff Spencer in a different way, Michael Kenna, Lee Acaster etc. etc. there's many. Another great discussion, well done sir.

To me B&W photos seem to preserve the subject more than colour photos. In viewing them you have a more relaxed state where as coloured one there is a more active presence. B&W photos are more like Art, I love it.

As I have said before I watch a lot of Peter Coulson, as well as TPE, so this comment is Peter via me... in colour images [and life] we see colour first - yellow car, blue raincoat etc.. With black and white we see the subject. I have reflected on this a lot, I agree with his analysis.

Hey Alex, I really enjoyed your video on Vivian Maier and I agreed with a lot of your points. In this day and age more than ever I believe it’s a good idea to analyze why we like or dislike something. We get bombarded from all sides with rapid fire media and I think we get caught flip flopping between convictions and ideologies more than we would like to admit. Bravo for bringing attention to this! I really enjoy Vivian’s work but I am going to review my conviction with this new lens (😜). Your choice of example photos is superb, and your choice of lady subjects is rather winning. I am just starting out in digital with my iPhone only before invest in expensive camera equipment. So far I am enjoying some of what I have captured. I tend to lean more in favor of the black and white images. To me black and white images when printed and framed look a bit more classy and stand out more than the color photos I take. Personally I like to compare a black and white white vs color image to watching a tv show vs listening to an old radio show broadcast, in both cases you get the same story but with the radio program ( black and white) you get to fill in in your minds eye what you can’t physically see (color) you get to use your minds eye more to fill in what you can’t see. And I think that’s much more interesting. Hope that made since. Thank for your videos they give me a lot to think about.

I love Salgado's work! I also cut my teeth on Ansel Adams (still alive when I first started) and still have his book series (The Camera, The Negative, The Print). But it was the subject matter of photojournalism/documentary photography that was my inspiration. I like how the absence of color helps drive the eye to see the emotions of the subjects in the image. I do need to look at the work of today's b&w pj/documentary photographers (like John Free who is still shooting film on the street) to see where they have gone. I was lucky enough to spend a decade as a newspaper photographer and it was one of the most fulfilling jobs I ever had.

I do love monochrome images. I have found though that rather than simply making an image black and white in post, a better result is achieved if you intend to take black and white. In my case, I shoot in raw so I do end up changing it in post, but I set my camera to show me black and white- choosing to do so beforehand. That may not work for everyone, but it means your balances are generally better and so the end result is more striking. All my favourite own photos are black and white (OK, almost all.) Much as I do love colour and playing with it, there's something altogether more pleasing about monochrome images to my eye.

As a music photographer, some of my favourite photographers come from that field and work almost exclusively in black and white. Of course the late Jim Marshall is there, but also Norman Seeff, whose high contrast portraits are instantly recognisable. The same with Anton Corbijn and Albert Watson. Jane Bown's portraits for The Observer were always superb. There is certainly no shortage of contemporary photographers still shooting in B&W, across most genres. Even though I mainly shoot digital, which gives the option to choose post shoot, I still take my OM1 loaded with B&W film to gigs to capture purely monochrome photos, especially when the lights go red.

I love your content and for the first time, your videos have given me a ‘hinge’ which is not technical, but more emotional to find my own voice. #BnW photos indeed have a more compelling story somehow, but we are so drawn to the obvious, in color that we never really experiment with the potential of BnW. In 2022, I’ve made it my personal project to only shoot in BnW and a lot of that inspiration comes from your videos and great work of the other photographers you portray. In short what I really want to say is, thank you.

I've been shooting almost exclusively black and white for a few months now. I started because it's cheaper than color film, but now every time I do get some color, it just doesn't work as well. I think when we shoot in black and white, it is much easier to focus on composition and light. Color can very easily subtract from a photo, especially on film where results are not always consistent.

The best (/worst?) demonstration of B&W vs Colour I can think of comes from the movie world. In 1998 Gus Van Sant remade Hitchcock's Psycho, shot for shot, in colour. Presumably he was already aware that Hitchcock consciously chose black and white (he had made Rope in colour 12 years before). Colour adds nothing, in fact, some things are less effective (the striking black blood running down the drain, Janet Leigh's nightwear goes from white to black after her crime, in colour this goes from green to orange IIRC). I can't imagine that Van Sant consciously set out to demonstrate how little value this would add to a classic, but it's the only reason to even consider watching it.

B&W Photography is all about textures, shapes and lines, etc. I simply love it, being drawn to it. Much more than color. Always. But some things, like fall or especially landscape photography, does look better into color. Black & white photography doesn't work automatically with every subject. For for many things, it's just the right thing, at the right time. And therefore, being better than into color.

I've been a professional image editor sine the beginning of the digital age. Color images are akin to multiple conversations at a social occasion. Black and white or more accurately as we tend to see them today desaturated RGB images are not akin to but are private conversations between the artist and the viewer. Just my opinion.

As always, thank you for a very thought-provoking presentation. I am a huge fan of Sebastião Salgado too. I consider his style is, as you say yourself, masterly. I also like the work of Sean Tucker, who uses the contrasting elements of the city to study and capture the fall of light and shade. OK, I am the first to admit that I am a bit anal about terminology here... {:-) But, if you will forgive me I will go for it: If I was to draw a Venn diagram the outer ring would be Monochrome images. I use the term monochromatic from its root: single colour, thus including images of a single colour group - such as all tones of blue, or red or green etc... They can look great in shots of early morning or sunsets across ranges of mountains. Within that ring, as a subset of it would be Greyscale: (Black TO White) - here there are a range of tones without colour from white through to black with all the shades of grey between, but containing no colour tint whatsoever. Within THAT would be Black+White: only PURE Black and PURE WHITE, a form in the more rigorous expression of the Japanese art of Notan: "Notan is a Japanese word that means “light-dark balance.”. A NOTAN image uses an extremely limited range of values: in its most strict form, just black and white; in its more liberal form, black, white, and a mid-tone." mitchalbala.com/the-wisdom-of-notan. So I use that form as my preferred definition and B&W. As one progresses from the outer layer to the innermost one, the challenges of creating an image (IMHO) become more challenging. pure B+W (NOTAN), demands quite a bit of skill and effort to create a harmonious image, because it is hard for us to imagine. I understood that when the light level becomes low enough we cease to sense colour via the cone receptors and then the rods dominate to allow us to perceive just levels of light and dark at a much more sensitive level.

color is often distracting from the shape, making black and white photography a lot simpler or clearer

It was the PEN-F that took me back to shooting mono and the 1:1 format of the Instamatic 126 I had as a child, and before that a Bakelite Box Brownie. Because colour was more expensive, I got to shoot mono. I used that cheap camera well into the 70s, transitioning to colour when old enough to work, before I could afford a SLR. Even so, film was relatively expensive, so it obliged you to think about taking the photo before pressing the shutter. With a digital camera it is all to easy to push the burst button and rattle off 50 shots of the same thing, all of them rubbish. To shoot mono with film, we saw the world in colour and had to envision what the photo would look like in mono. With digital it is perhaps easier, we can switch the display to mono and see what we will get. But as with film using the light is perhaps more important for mono than with colour; the flash gun has re-emerged from its hibernation.

😢Alex where do you buy your discounted photographic books? I’ve checked several ‘discounted’ titles, but none at the prices you paid for yours.

Hi Anton. A lot of these books I've had for years. Others I buy preorder - like the Dan Winters 'Road To Seeing', which IIRC was like $20. They sell out quickly and no more are printed- hence the price going up. I have some on my wish list that were $50 when I put them on there and are now $900!

Impressive! Almost 15mins of talk about b&w and you didn’t mention the ‘abstraction’ word once. Was that intentional?

How often do you hear people comment about a movie, that it pales in comparison to the book of the same name? The movie may have cost millions to produce and often includes incredible resolution, color grading work along with multichannel audio, and yet people will often comment that it just wasn't as rich as the book. A book is made of fibrous off-white paper with letters printed in black ink, and yet that method of delivery results in a more dramatic story in the reader's mind. I think black and white photography can have a similar result. In a color photo the viewer plays no role in building the image, only in consuming and perhaps some level of interpretation, but in a B&W image the viewer is responsible for creating a part of the experience. They have to fill in the details of the colors, and since there are no colors included, they can choose to make them what they want. They can build a color palette that only includes what they admire in the image or they can fill in every last shadow. It can be highly saturated or subtle. I was thinking about this earlier and walked into my house to see the TV was playing The Munsters, but when I first saw the screen it was just on two characters who were not moving. I actually thought for a moment that it was something on PBS about photography because it was such a vivid image on the screen. I just watched it for a few minutes, honestly, just to marvel at the stunning quality of the imagery in that old sitcom. I plan to work on my B&W skills as I work to improve as a photographer. Thanks for a thoughtful and though provoking video.

I find black and white photographs present themselves as the only option. I just know they wont work as well in colour, I much prefer stark B&W rather they greyscale.
