A new approach for complex composite structures - the combination of 3D-printing and Automated Fibre Placement (AFP).
Using this method, the performance of AFP laminates is combined with the flexibility and design freedom of 3D-printing, thus enabling a new cooperative form of additive manufacturing for complex parts. Here the AFP laminate is manufactured using CF-LM-PAEK and overprinted with short carbon fibre-reinforced PEEK. The bonding between printed core and laminate is achieved in-situ during the printing process and an additional 3D-printed tooling is used to tailor the curvature of the AFP laminate.
